I was reading this article in which they jokingly mention it: http://www.cracked.com/article/242_6-tv-shows-that-completely-lost-their-****/

It got me thinking, for those of you familiar enough w/the syndrome, would you say that the character could have potentially had that? Could you give specific examples/reasons?

If you are talking about the character steve urkel then yes he had Asperger's because it was clear that he was "socially ********"

Yes the character. Not only was he very socially awkward, but he had unusually high intelligence, which is ironic given the distinction in his social awareness. Consistent w/AS. He also caused hurt to others, but never intended to, you could see that it bothered him. Unusual voice patterns, and clumsiness are also side effects of that.

I disagree, I have Asperger's syndrome, and it's never made me overbearing. If anything I am more withdrawn and isolated.

Not sure what you mean by 'overbearing'...but everyone's different, and everyone w/AS is different as well. But they have high intelligence/lower social awareness, and most have peculiarities in their voice/bad body posture and fashion sense.

I have Asperger's too. I could see I was kind of like Urkel when I was younger but I seem to have changed over time. Not quite as clumsy as I was, but still socially withdrawn at times.

Yes, people with AS get better at things through experience...it seemed like the only improvement Steve made was losing the suspenders in season 9 LOL

yeah i hate to say it but everyone had to no that steve had no luck with making friends, getting himself a job, are having women chase after him except myra who was so beautiful she would have men standing in line to date her no way in real life would a light skinned girl like myra would go for a outcast dude like steve urkle she would not give him the time of day in his life, he tried hard to change himself in season 9 but got turned down cause the women dident want to kiss him at the modeling contest laura saw how shallow women could be and kissed steve out of sympathy then steve got lucky and they both fell in love.

I don't think Steve had that condition, it'd be more obvious if he did. Sure, he didn't have many friends and/or socialized, but that was because of his of nerdy image and he wasn't 'cool' enough to hang out with most guys at school, etc. He was one of a kind. He did socialize whenever possible though and when people accepted him. He didn't really have any problems being around them, he also wanted to make the babsketball team, and he did, and in the series we see him play with Eddie and his friends.

I think Steve was an aspie, yes. Because most nerds are aspies, and most aspies are nerds.

Their was nothing wrong with steve he had high self esteem he was kinda wimpy for all 9 seasons he was eccentric and people were ashamed to be seen with him because of his apperance what were his parents thinking having him dress like that infront of his peers at school, i think if their was a 10th season steve would have came back a changed man he would wear up to date clothes, he would talk in a normal voice, walk normal, he would be more romantic with laura instead of just getting on her nerves.

Steve couldn't have changed that much, even in a tenth season. Steve was Steve, he was himself, it was his personality, and in the show, his high-pitched voice was his actual voice, so it wouldn't have been changed anyway. He improved himself, but that's different.

The producers of this sitcom were afraid to change steve out of the nerd image because they new people would stop watching the show if they changed steve into a normal person they would be getting hate mails from angry fans the show would have been taken off the air fast , steve urkle was a huge hit in the 90's kids were dressing like him and talking like him wearing the same kinda clothes he wore i am sure it drove their parents nuts lol, i think steve urkle was Bipolar always making people feeling sorry for him when he gave a speech and he spend most of his life stuck at home working on inventions instead of hanging out with friends.

I don't think they were afraid to change Steve into a 'normal' person, I think those chose not to do it, because really, Steve Urkel was a brilliant character.

Steve was the best character on the show and the whole world new that the other characters on the show were boring except for eddie and carl, eddie was a ladies man and a cheater who was always dating other girls when he already had a girlfriend, carl was funny because he was always getting into fights with his wife for no reason at all, without jaleel this show would not have made it to the second are third season, the show was very similar to the cosby show before steve urkle came long.
