Who else here thinks Martin is the best character on Frasier? Granted I've only watched the first 5 episodes of Season 1 at the time of writing, but I'm already loving it, particularly Martin, thanks to his down-to-earth nature, contrast to Frasier and Niles, and, personality-wise resemblance to Mr. Roper from Three's Company

Again, this may be too early to form a fully-formed opinion, but if Martin wasn't a character on Frasier, or had a different personality, I don't think Frasier would have lasted 11 seasons.

Martin's a great character! I love watching his relationships with both Frasier and Niles change over the series. They go from just being 3 guys who happen to be related to actually being a family. Def. something you don't see much of in sitcoms these days, I think!

Yes, yes, be sure to keep watching all of it. I have to say, overall Niles is my favorite character, and while I like them all, I do like some characters more or less at different times in the series. I like Niles a lot to begin with, but I like him more and more as the series goes on (I bet you will too). And early on I like Martin and Daphne a lot, and I like them both better than I like Frasier. I love the relationship between Martin and Eddie too. In the early seasons Martin reminds me a lot of my grandpa. I like Roz better in the later seasons than the earlier ones. Overall, Martin is tied with Daphne for my second favorite character on the show. I think Martin is so likeable because he's the most normal. Usually when I'm thinking something, Martin is the one who says what I'm thinking. The one thing about this show though is that it has one of the best casts in television. I think you'll probably find as you keep watching that there's something to like about all five of the characters, and not only the great writing, but the way the cast interacts (the chemistry) is what makes this show and cast so much better than a lot of others, and in my opinion, is why it went 11 seasons. I hope we'll hear more from you as you keep watching, and I certainly envy you for getting to experience this show for the first time!

I absolutely LOVE Martin, although Niles is my favorite. Martin is probably one of the most unique characters on the show, if only that his personality is different from everyone else's. He does change quite a bit within the series but in a good way. He's a bit disgruntled at the beginning of the series, but even though he softens a bit through the course of the show, he never loses his signature personality. I also envy you for experiencing Frasier for the first time. Now that I've seen every epiosde at least twice, I somehow feel that I know Martin personally.

I love Martin! Niles and Daphne are my two favorite characters, but I can't help but love Martin. He started out as the bitter, gruff character but throughout the series he mellowed while still keeping his edge. He was like everyone's dad.
As the show progressed, we realized how much Martin and his sons had in common. Now, Frasier and Niles may not have been "manly" men, they loved psychiatry, opera and fine wines, but they had Martin's stubbornness, sense of ethics and loyalty to people.
It was also nice to see how close Martin and Niles became near the end of the show. In the beginning, Martin and Niles could barely stand to be in the same room together, but near the end of the series, Martin and Niles were so close and could tell each other anything. I think a lot of that had to do with Daphne, I think she was the one who helped them become close and stay close. Daphne was the glue that held them all together. Thank God for her. :D
Even the chemistry between the three of them; DHP, Kelsey and John was so believable that you really believed you were watching a father with his sons. It doesn't get better than that. :D
John Mahoney was so good at playing Martin, he made the role his own and I will always be grateful to him for that. He is certainly a character that will always be remembered. :)

Well I've just finished Season 2, Episode 6, and while the first season overall wasn't as good as any season of Cheers, excepting perhaps the first, second and possibly fifth, it certainly showed a lot of promise :D And given that the first season of a show is almost never the best, I've got a feeling the best is yet to come :D

Oh, it definitely is! :) You haven't even scratched the surface of Niles & Daphne, and for a lot of us here, that's the best part of the show!

 Too funny!! I have a feeling 704Hauser isn't in it for a romantic story:

But the good news for 704Hauser is that there's plenty of other stuff to love about the show besides just Niles and Daphne's evolving storyline. I think you'll continue to enjoy it, because even if you aren't really in it for a romantic story, it does all come together in really good ways.
By the way, did you love "Travels with Martin?" The one where he takes the gang for vacation in a Winnebago? That's one of my favorite episodes. :)

Any couple who can replace Jack and Jennifer from Days of our Lives as my all time favorite couple is AMAZING in my book. That being said, I should point out that Jack and Jennifer had been my all time since 1989!
But then again, I shouldn't be surprised because up until about January or February of last year, Seinfeld was my all time favorite show (and had been since it's debut in 1989!) Go figure!

But I do agree with everyone on here, Niles and Daphne make the show for me. Now the show is good regardless, but Niles and Daphne are the best part of it. :loveya:
