How many of you remember the second-season episode called "Julie Smokes"? I was thirteen years old when it first came out. I was devestated to see a babe like Julie puffing away! Shame on her! I remember it started when the chief was shocked and apalled to see evidence that someone living under his roof would do such a thing! Probably even more so than he was when he learned that Katie had been on birth control a year earlier. One thing that there is no question about is that this episode was made because it was politically correct for its time. It seems that almost every show (especially those with a family or youth oreanted audience) had an anti- smoking message. Well as time went on, the non-smoking gospel was preached louder and louder all over the United States and beyond. This episode was long before it became illegal for people to smoke on any domestic flights not to mention in restaurants and bars in the vast majority of states. Well, one thing that there became a very big push for is not to have likable characters (especially those that children enjoy) that smoke. I remember reading about a special ceremony in which "Mr. Potato Head" surrendered his pipe! I happen to own a remake of the original "Mr. Potato Head". This means that it does not have a trap door in the back to store all of its parts! However, one thing that the company was not willing to reproduce was his pipe! At this point, you are probably wondering why I am calling this thread "The Pep Boys". Well, I happened to remember commercials for the "Pep Boys" car service, ever since the early eighties. Back then, one of them had a cigar. Well, right when I came to this page, there was a picture of the three animated guys promoting the store. And sure enough, there was no cigar! Just one more sign of the times! I am sure that if the chief were still with us, he would be very happy about this reality!
