On the 20th of March, I started a thread titled "Boots, Boots and More Boots". The thing that inspried me to post this thread was the constant promotions for lady's boots that I would see whenever I would come to this site as well as several others. I made an association between the boots in these ads with the type of boots that this show's Julie Kinisky would were. And, just for the record, in my opinion, the site of Julie in her designer dress boots is just about the sexiest site around! In any event, this thread now has forty-two views and zero replies. I would like to commemorate this event by mentioning that, forty-two years ago, a new decade started. When "Gimme a Break!" first aired, the seventies had been over for less than two years. I would say that, a lot of the political correctness of the seventies paved the way for heavy-handed shows like "Gimme a Break!". That decade featured such daring series as All in the Family, M*A*S*H, and the Jeffersons. These shows were influenced by things in the previous decade such as the Civil Rights Movement, environmental pollution and thousands of deaths (many of them of minorities) in Vietman. It was during this decade that we saw the Women's Movement, busing and the eventual end of the war in Vietnam. These events paved the way for more heavy-handed series like "Different Strokes" and "Facts of Life". It was because of all of this that it had become socially acceptable for a thirteen year old girl to be as athletic and as tomboyish as Samantha. It was also these events that made it acceptable for a super-brain like Julie and a simpleton like Katie to both be mainstreamed with average, run of the mill people in school, the neighboorhood and many other situations. In other words, it became socially accceptable for all of the above to have what the Archie Bunkers of this world would call "normal" friends! What a time in American history!
