My nephew's boy had his first baseball game and I decided to attend. His coach had him playing 3rd base and naturally he thought he had to stand on the bag at all times. A runner reached third and he tried to stand on the bag with him, he was trying to nudge him off and I could hear him mumbling to the kid, " Get off, I'm supposed to be playing third base " Then someone hit a ball into the outfield and their coach yelled for the kid on third to run home.My nephew's kid took off running and beat the kid across home plate. His coach screamed for him to go back and cover third and I saw him look at his coach and say, " I don't know what I'm doin " So the coach came out and escorted him back to third. One of the outfielders was chasing a moth and the ball went out to where he was,his coach hollered for him to get the ball but the kid just sat down and started crying because he got yelled at. Nobody won or lost this game because nobody kept score. My nephew told me that at the end of the season every team gets the same size trophy. Like everything else, even baseball has changed since I was a kid.

How old is the nephew? Did they have any practice before the first game? Actually, the way you described it--it sounded kind of funny, like The Bad News Bears

He's around 7 or so, They hit the ball off a tee instead of facing a pitcher. There is also a half-moon circle about 10 feet in front of the catcher. From what I understand, the ball has to go past that to be in play. I kept looking for Walter Matthau myself.

No, he didn't do that, but he was glad to go for ice cream when it was over. These games are more entertaining than Major league games. When I think back to my little league days, I don't think we really cared if we won either. It was all about having fun and trying to knock the crap out of the ball.
