A video crew will film Indianapolis 500 favorite Jim Nabors singing "Back Home Again in Indiana" at this year's race.

The 81-year-old will undergo a heart surgery later this month and will miss the pre-race celebration where he has sang for years.

An IMS Productions video crew is scheduled to fly to Hawaii next week to film Nabors singing the song, IMS spokesman Doug Boles said today.

"He offered that," Boles said of Nabors. "You've got to remember that (the 500) is as much a highlight of his year as it is for the hundreds of thousands of fans who hear him sing."

Nabors began performing the song "Back Home Again in Indiana" in 1972. He has performed the song every year but one at the Indy 500 since 1987. He missed the 2007 race due to health reasons.

I clicked the link and saw that the poor grammar "has sang" was indeed in the original article. Once upon a time no reporter would ever have used such poor grammar, and no editor would have allowed it to pass unnoticed.

Most of us don't concern ourselves with improper grammar around here. As long as the message is coherent enough to understand then that's all that matters.

I am not speaking about anything that any member here posted. I was speaking about the report from the Indianapolis Star that was linked to in the post, hence my reference to reporter and editor.

I realize that but you should've replaced Brian's name in the quote tags with that of the person who wrote the article, Kristine Guerra.

I think he's doing fine, he and his partner were married not long ago.

How funny that this is mentioned (funny as in coincidentall, BTW) because not two days ago my best friend at work was telling me about how Jim Neighbors lives in Montana and she's been by his house. I wasn't sure if he was still alive or not but I do remember that he married his partner not that long ago. I hope the surgery goes well for him.

That's pretty cool, Andrea! :) As far as I know, he's doing ok, because his birthday was yesterday, and he sang at the Indy 500 not too long ago. :)

It's possible that Jim Nabors owns a home in Montana but he's lived in Hawaii for over 40 years.

You did nothing wrong. It was obvious that you were talking about the reporter and the editor. There's no rule about putting anything in quotes. In fact, you would have been wrong if you did that.
