1. The last time the show was seen in syndication was 1991 as a marathon

2. The show doesn't have enough episodes to be in syndication

3. No syndication means no exposure and no DVD release

Even on youtube it's only NBC promos of the show but no full episodes.

It's a good show, perhaps some channel like Antenna or Me-TV would put it back on the air again.I thought they made more than 37 episodes, but even if that's all they made it still is enough for some channel to run the show and for it to be on DVD.

Yeah the show would just have to be aired once or twice a week like Antenna TV does with Maude and WKRP in Cincinnati

My memory of this show was that it was basically a ripoff of Gomer Pyle: USMC. I like Don Rickles, but they should have come up with something more original for him to do.

Wrong because it was no on CPO Sharkey similar to Gomer or the Sgt

Seems like Rickles was slightly similar to Sgt. Carter, and the big blonde guy was sort of a Gomer type. But it was a show like Bilko, McHale, and other military comedies of that type, really.

I'm pretty sure Sally Field's later fame in movies is the main, if only, reason for reruns of Gidget being in reruns, on cable, and on DVD. If Gidget had starred a contemporary of Sally's, such as Debbie Watson for example, it would probably be as rare anywhere as Debbie's series (Karen & Tammy). Unfortunately Sally's last sitcom, The Girl with Something Extra, is rarely seen anywhere now. I saw the pilot rerun once as part of Screen Gems Network, but that's all that's probably been rerun since it was cancelled in 1974.

Don Rickels is hilarious and I do not understand why he did not make it in a sitcom, much like, say, Redd Foxx since they both had similar humor. Rickels was very believable as a senior enlisted man overseeing a diverse group of sailors that he got to make fun of every week, that and Seaman Pruitt. This was in the wonderful 1970's before political correctness.

I watched this as a kid and really liked it and wished it could have lasted longer.

I converted my "Dishonorable Discharge" marathon to DVD a couple years ago though just for myself I substituted the original NBC broadcast of the premiere (since it is uncut) and for the episode that is the one that Johnny Carson barged in on during a Tonight Show taping, I just for kicks spliced in the footage of Carson barging in in the middle of the scene where it would have taken place!

You do realize that whole Carson coming on the set during the taping was a publicity stunt. It was all planned out from the box breaking to Carson storming on stage. Reckles and Carson were friends, Rickles had hoped Carson might appear on an episode.but he was unwilling to do so, but he did work this bit into the Tonight show.

I see what you are saying. My dad was the first one watching Sanford in my home. We heard him laughing so much:lol: and started watching with him. I love Sanford !! So it attracted a male audience at first , a show about a junkman and his son, but so darn funny, got a lot of female fans too! :)

When my family was watching Maude I was watching too -- and found Adrienne Barbeau to be interesting to say the least. The girls in my classes at school sure hadn't "developed" in that way...! LOL I also liked the theme song, even though I hadn't made out the "bra burner" line in the lyrics.

I do remember watching Sharkey but not much about it. Rickles was extremely well-known and I think everyone knew what kind of act to expect.

As you posted you think there aren't enough episodes to be picked up on syndication. Another poster mentioned Gidget. That only was on one season and Antenna played that every weekend for the longest time. So maybe one day they will start showing Sharkey. That would be cool! ;)
