i didn't understand that joke about 'monologues', can anyone explain it.

You mean from Anna Howard Shaw Day when Liz said "There's plenty of things that are better with one person, like monologues"?

The joke was just that Liz was desperately trying to think of things better with one person and monologues was the only thing she could come up with, which are a one-person speech in a play and obviously aren't even possible with more than one person.
