On several occasions, I have mentioned that, in her younger years, this show's lovely little Helen Hunt auditioned for the part of Katie Kinisky from "Gimme a Break!". However, she got beaten out by Kari Michaelsen. In any event, my memories of that show are almost as pleasent as my memories of "Mad About You". This is mainly because, I had almost as big a crush on that show's Julie Kinisky (Lauri Hendler) as I did on this show's Jamie Buchman! I really admired Julie's decency and sophistication! In any event, in 1985, Dolph Sweet who played the police chief died. Although there was never an episode in which the character himself died, in the fall of 1985, there was an episode in which his death the previous spring was mentioned. The show did it best to carry on for two more seasons after the death of the chief. However, the last season in New York was, more or less, a joke in its own time! If this is, at all possible, it was as bad if not worse than "Punky Bruster"! In any event, I am writing about the chief's death as a commemoration of the twenty-seven views of my last post as well as my second to last post on this page. The actor died twenty-seven years ago! Bye!

The show was never the same after the Chief died. He was as important to the show as Nell was. They also should have ended the series rather then revamp it and get rid of all the girls. I agree with you. The last season was a joke.

Thank you very much for that, well-thought-out reply! Because this post pertained to "Gimme a Break!", I plan on telling my buddies on that page about my success on stimulating some conversation over here! Given how much knowledge you shared, I am guessing that, at some point, you were a fan of "Gimme a Break!". What about the show did you like? And, last but not least, what did you think of my comparison to the last season of that show and the whole series known as "Punky Bruster"?

I liked the cast chemistry especially the relationship between Nell and the Chief and Nell and the girls. I think once those relationships ended, the show just became less interesting. I think the last season was far worse than Punky Brewster as I actually liked that show at the time. It didn't seem like any reason for the last season though. Nell and Addy in NY was just boring.

I agree that they should have ended the show following the Chief's death. It was not the same.

I am very happy to see that some conversation is finally being stimulated on this page! When I first started this thread, I mentioned how "Mad About You's" Helen Hunt had auditioned for the part of Katie Kinisky from "Gimme a Break!". She was 18 years old at the time. How do you guys think that she would have done in that role? Personally, I would have a hard time picturing someone with a much decency and sophistication as Helen playing the part of someone as shallow as superficial and Katie! But that is just my opinion.
