The entire point of the sketch was to make fun of blackface and the old racial stereotypes that existed in the early age of TV. So...I wouldn't say they went too far. They've used blackface before too, in similar fashions.

I liked the bit where Hamm played a 1960s TV news anchor, cigarette in hand.
News and talk shows used to do that stuff in the '50s and early '60s.
Hell, Johnny Carson used to smoke on camera during interviews at one point.

I don't have a problem with it, but then again I come from a central european background so these cultural bits aren't really rooted very deep in me. I can see where they were coming from though, and I agree with Joe on this, too.
