View Full Version : The better NYC Sitcom from the 90's..."Seinfeld or Friends?"
TVFactFan 04-19-2012, 11:16 PM I been hooked on Friends every night for more than a month then all of a sudden i discovered that Seinfeld comes on at 2am on TBS the same time as Friends on Nick@Nite
So I gave the slight edge to Seinfeld and watch Friends at 3am because of Jerry, George, and Elaine. They were too damm funny.
What NYC sitcom do you like better?
catlover79 04-19-2012, 11:19 PM I gotta go with Seinfeld - hands down.
TVFactFan 04-19-2012, 11:22 PM I gotta go with Seinfeld - hands down.
I was surprised so many of my friends said."YUCK to friends " on facebook LOL
-STEFFY- 04-20-2012, 12:50 AM IMO Seinfeld was much better.
TVFactFan 04-20-2012, 01:07 AM IMO Seinfeld was much better.
Surprised that NBC never had the cast of Friends and Seinfeld crossover since both shows were set in the same city
-STEFFY- 04-20-2012, 01:56 AM ^ That's true. The actress who played "Monica" on Friends (Courtney Cox) was on Seinfeld once, but she was a different character, not the "Monica" character. She was Jerry's fake wife so they could get a family discount at the dry cleaners. That was a good one.

I will call that a quiet crossover-LOL
yankeesrj12 04-20-2012, 02:10 PM Friends, without a doubt. I never could get into Seinfeld.
ryan423 04-21-2012, 09:51 PM Both are great. Can't compare the two. Drastically different styles. I'm probably one of the very few who prefer Curb to Seinfeld though.
Mr. Television 04-21-2012, 10:04 PM Seinfeld all the way. I could never stand Friends.
factsoflife 04-22-2012, 02:29 AM Friends. I liked that show better.
Mad About You was also awesome.
TVFactFan 04-22-2012, 03:24 AM Seinfeld all the way. I could never stand Friends.
Lol. Rachel and monica didn't pull you in? Lol
Schmoopie 04-22-2012, 04:44 AM I'm sure it comes as no surprise to anyone that my favorite show is Seinfeld! I do like Friends on occasion but I think Seinfeld is brilliant!

I'm going to buy the complete set of Seinfeld on DVD one day.

benjamoon 04-23-2012, 12:45 AM neithr boy meet world blows these two show out of water
that has NOTHING to do with the topic
My answer is Friends hands down. I've always thought Seinfeld was a bit overrated though there are some episodes I love
factsoflife 04-23-2012, 12:57 AM neithr boy meet world blows these two show out of water
Boy Meets World? Really? These three are all very different types of shows, comparing Friends and Seinfeld to Boy Meets World makes very little sense. They aren't the same type of shows, and in no way did BMW ever come close to the kind of acclaim, ratings or popularity of Seinfeld or Friends.

I have to agree with this although I did like BMW at first. After a while it got on my nerves but it was an okay show. Definitely not the same type of show as Seinfeld or Friends. Come to think of it, I don't even remember it taking place in New York!

It didn't. Boy Meets World was supposed to be somewhere in Pennsylvania near Philadelphia.
icecream 04-24-2012, 12:25 AM While Seinfeld is a tad overrated it's still much better than Friends (although I like the Friends theme song).
*Pleasant Tomorrow* 04-24-2012, 12:59 AM I'm going to say Friends, but that doesn't mean I love Friends. I kind of grew up with it and I do find it funny a lot of the time, but the relationship drama and audience wooing is super annoying. Just, if they could've cut back on the Ross and Rachel drama and everyone didn't sleep with everyone else, I'd like it a lot more. It really can be quite funny.
But Seinfeld I just...ugh. I've tried to watch it and appreciate it and I just can't. Something about the atmosphere of it. I can't quite put my finger on it, but it just doesn't do it for me.
Willbo 04-24-2012, 08:37 AM No contest. Seinfeld. Not that there is anything wrong with Friends.
TVFactFan 04-24-2012, 08:01 PM I can watch either show but if asked which one would I want to see first I would choose Seinfeld since it deals with things that happens in everyday life.
Mr. Television 04-24-2012, 09:02 PM While Seinfeld is a tad overrated it's still much better than Friends (although I like the Friends theme song).
I agree. The one thing I do like about Friends is the theme song. It's one of the best of the 90's.
mets82 04-24-2012, 10:17 PM I can watch either show but if asked which one would I want to see first I would choose Seinfeld since it deals with things that happens in everyday life.
If you dont mind me asking, you mentioned you watch Seinfeld at 2am and then Friends at 3am, when do you sleep?
As far as Seinfeld and Friends goes, I like and watch both but I have to give the edge to Seinfeld. Friends got heavy sometimes (Ross and Rachel's breakup, Chandler and Monica getting married, Chandler and Monica getting engaged etc.) Seinfeld was never like that. It was never heavy. The only time it came close, I think, was when in the very early ones and Jerry and Elaine were trying to be a couple again and it was her birthday and he gave her 182 bucks. And he was saying "No this, no that" and then Elaine very quietly said "I dont think I can do that". That might have been the only "sad" if you can call it that scene of Seinfeld.

I'm not working right now so I got to bed in between 3:30am and 4:30am and wake up about 12pm.
MRPITT 04-25-2012, 10:05 AM Friends. I liked that show better.
Mad About You was also awesome.
I liked Seinfeld better hence my screen name. There was no Seinfeld, Friends crossover but there was a Seinfeld, Mad About You Crossover.
factsoflife 04-25-2012, 11:58 AM I liked Seinfeld better hence my screen name. There was no Seinfeld, Friends crossover but there was a Seinfeld, Mad About You Crossover.
and a Friends/Mad About You crossover... Actually several. Ursula, the ditzy waitress on MAY played by Lisa Kudrow was the twin sister of Phoebe on Friends and made crossovers on Friends and once, Helen Hunt and Lelia Kenzel from MAY appeared in a scene in Central Perk, where they thought Phoebe was Ursula.
James 04-25-2012, 01:01 PM I'll say Seinfeld. It didn't feature David Schwimmer. Enough said.
TVFactFan 04-25-2012, 05:56 PM The one thing that gives Seinfeld the edge is it didn't have that "cute love story" thing going on from time to time like on Friends.
But if someone gave me the complete series on DVD for Seinfeld and Friends
I would watch Friends on Saturday and Seinfeld on Sunday
Mr. Television 04-25-2012, 07:21 PM I'll say Seinfeld. It didn't feature David Schwimmer. Enough said.
I figured you'd like him since he was on the Wonder Years. lol
TVFactFan 04-25-2012, 08:07 PM I figured you'd like him since he was on the Wonder Years. lol
who was he on the wonder years??
MRPITT 04-25-2012, 09:20 PM He was Karen's boyfriend she moved into the House with him, he appeared in a Handful of Episodes.
Mr. Television 04-25-2012, 10:45 PM He was Karen's boyfriend she moved into the House with him, he appeared in a Handful of Episodes.
She also ended up marrying him and on the last episode it was announced that Karen had a baby boy.
James 04-26-2012, 01:38 AM I figured you'd like him since he was on the Wonder Years. lol
Nope. He became more famous for his role in Friends, which explains why he and that show are high on my crumb list. :livid:
Buffyboy323 04-26-2012, 01:52 AM I grew up with both shows, both are great, but I always had a soft spot for...Friends! I watched it so much back in the day, I wonder what my reaction to it would be now, more than a decade after my love affair with it. I do think Seinfeld was the "better" show though. Friends is just a personal favorite.
tooltime1987 06-23-2013, 11:51 AM I like Seinfeld and I hope Nick at Nite/TV Land will air Seinfeld!!!
Michael cole 09-22-2015, 07:26 PM I'll take Seinfeld any day over friends
AMackII 08-03-2018, 09:11 AM Both
mets82 08-03-2018, 04:36 PM Friends is more of a pull at the heart strings show. Seinfeld isn't. I think Seinfeld is a better and funnier show than Friends.
Seinfeld, followed by Friends.
Dale Key 08-08-2018, 02:30 AM Friends was very funny but they used a lot of lame setup-setup-punchline jokes in the scripts, particularly in the early seasons. Seinfeld was non-stop brilliance from season 2 through the end.
principehomura 08-12-2018, 04:51 AM Both great sitcoms. I pick Friends also for nostalgia value.
But maube the most 'attached' and related to New York was Mad About You.
stevea 08-12-2018, 02:55 PM I'll take Seinfeld any day over friends
Ditto.
Crusinforabrusin 08-19-2018, 10:00 AM Seinfeld is by far the better NYC sitcom. Although I enjoy Friends as well
RetroGuy2000 08-24-2018, 09:42 PM Friends was better. Seinfeld was kinda off-putting. The episode where George's fiance dies and he doesn't care set me off that show for good.
Impressions 08-28-2018, 02:31 AM Neither, I preferred Sex & the City over both of those.
