View Full Version : The Same Shows!
dougiezerts 04-14-2012, 04:42 PM Anyone ever notice that PBS shows the same British shows over and over again? I mean, how many times do they have to repeat ARE YOU BEING SERVED, KEEPING UP APPEARENCES, LAST OF THE SUMMER WINE, and so forth! They're good shows, but please put on something new! (or something old that's never been broadcast in the states before!)
LUNCH 04-15-2012, 11:59 AM I agree.PBS keeps showing the same Britcoms. On top of that they do not show all the episodes on some of the shows, they skip quite a few of them.On occasion they'll add a different British comedy show, but that's not often. On a positive note at least PBS still does show Britcoms.BBC America for example hardly ever shows them anymore. And of course they are not shown on any other channels,as far as I know.It is rediculous because there are so many good classic British comedies that should be shown on American television.

Have Dad's Army and/or It Ain't Half Hot Mum ever been screened in the US? They, along with Love Thy Neighbour, are the only Britcoms worth watching in my opinion, and it's a shame if America has missed out on them.
LUNCH 05-15-2012, 10:47 AM 704Hauser,I'm not really sure.At one point those shows you mentioned may have had a run on some channel.Personally,I've never seen those 3 programs on TV. In general when it comes to classic British comedies and also other types of programs from the UK, the choices have always been quite limited on American TV.

As much as I love American TV, that's a real shame! In Australia, we get most Britcoms on TV, both old and new, and if they're not on TV anymore, they're easily available on DVD.
LUNCH 05-18-2012, 10:26 AM I agree with you.And as far as I know,in the UK many American shows, both old and new have always been shown on TV.Yet the reverse is not true in America, aside from the very limited selection of course. - --Something else that may interest you.On American TV you'd be hard pressed to find any program made in Australia, and I'm confident Australian TV must have produced a number of quality TV shows over the years.
LUNCH 05-18-2012, 10:30 AM As far as DVDs of classic Britcoms go,many are available here too.So at least that is one way of watching these shows.

Local PBS station aired "Dad's Army" back in the late '70's/early '80's, but I haven't seen it since. I also remember them airing "Ripping Yarns", "To the Manor Born", and "The Two Ronnies" around that same time.

TO THE MANOR BORN gets shown a lot. So is one called THE GOOD LIFE (AKA THE GOOD NEIGHBORS, in the US, because there was another short-live program by that name).
biffbronson 12-10-2012, 09:04 PM I still enjoy Keeping Up Appearances. My mom is an even bigger fan than I am -- and while she's claimed to have seen all of the episodes, once in a great while, one will be on that she hadn't.
robyrob 12-10-2012, 10:18 PM i wish they'd mix it up a bit and show a greater variety of shows
icecream 12-11-2012, 12:59 AM I miss Yes, Minister/Yes, Prime Minister. It's easily my favorite Britcom. Put it on instead of Last of the Summer Wine, that show sucks! Also, my PBS station reduced the hours for Britcoms on Saturdays from 8-11 to 8-10. Red Green now has the 10PM hour.
Hebburn 08-11-2013, 05:01 PM The Same Shows!
I have to agree with the original theme of this thread. As much as I love ATGB, do they have to show TWO episodes a week? And KUA, and AYBS are getting pretty old after seeing them for years at a time.
And while we are knocking PBS, don't you love the way they get a nice line up going only to break it up with fund drives, where they play DVDs of old 60's groups, when you tuned it to see Britcoms???
I realize things aren't going to be perfect on a donor based network, but the programing could be managed better. Play some commercials! Who cares? Just give us more different Britcoms!

The crap they show during pledge drives makes me NOT want to donate to them!

I had an idea about that:
What they should do is have a blank screen. On the screen is written, "We will show this screen untill viewers have pledge $1,000,000 (arbitrary figure) to us. As soon as this figure is reached, we will resume our normal programming. You may call us at (123) 456-7890, or email us at sendpbsmoneyorelse.com"
UMFaninMD 08-11-2013, 07:40 PM Those DVD of 60's groups and the classical music and the "how to eat healthy seminars" actually bring in the money according to PBS. I would think the British sitcoms and dramas would do it, given the success of Downton Abbey and Masterpiece Mystery.

Since I last posted in this thread, I have begun watching Yes, Minister, great show indeed, looking forward to the sequel! Have you seen the 2013 remake?

Yes! They sure talk like it! LOL! You would think, if they were so popular, they would run them instead of Britcoms

Not to mention the Scott "Play The Piano In A Flash" Houston Infomercial. The one where he's "noodling" on his piano (dirty old man). ;)

What are they going to blank out, Lawrence Welk reruns?
704Hauser 11-17-2013, 06:41 AM No I haven't, didn't know there was one.
I'm up to Yes, Prime Minister now, it's all been very, very good!
My dad's seen a bit of the remake, and he mentioned to me that it was awful. It's by the original writers, with new actors playing Hacker, Sir Humphrey and Bernard.
Steve_uk 11-17-2013, 07:06 AM Since I last posted in this thread, I have begun watching Yes, Minister, great show indeed, looking forward to the sequel! Have you seen the 2013 remake?
Yes:don't bother with it.
dougiezerts 11-17-2013, 12:15 PM What are they going to blank out, Lawrence Welk reruns?
How about DOWNTON ALLEY. That would really bring in pledges!
NordiqueSmith 12-01-2013, 01:41 AM PBS has choose British comedies that aren't too ''british'', with local and obscure references and language....I find those to be the best.
And they have to play the card that Britcoms cost them huge sums of money to bring over and the pledges make the deal.....somewhat. So, PBS showing the commonplace classics is ok. Forget anything new or recent, it's all lame.
Just do what I've done and get out there and find those great Shows

What about Monty Python? That was rife with "Britishness," yet it was very popular in the US!
Hebburn 12-30-2013, 06:42 PM WOW! I've complained about PBS many times but, I guess I have little to complain about compared to others. I'm beginning to understand why GPB is rated THE #1 PBS affiliate with this Brit line up!

I'd love to see some episodes of Steptoe And Son and the series All In The Family was based on (can't remember that name at the moment)... I know they may have been shown here in the US at various times but I've never managed to catch them, after decades of curiosity.

Older Britcoms like most older shows don't cost a lot of money to run,so that's another reason they should air a lot more of them and a much wider variety of them. Has PBS ever shown "Only Fools And Horses" which is considered one of the UKs top classic comedies.I've seen some of it on DVD and it's very good. That is one of a number of Britcoms they should add to their line-up.

Decent line up for sure! Nice mix. I like many of the older Britcoms and have watched many of them over and over for years. But it's nice to see more up to date shows also. The Cafe is warm and charming, like a cup of hot chocolate. And, it took me a while to appreciate her but, Miranda is a hoot. But I LOVE Hebburn!!! Looking forward to season 2 !!!!!
Hebburn 02-17-2014, 04:10 PM We've had great programing for a long time. Now we are down to 4 shows in 3 hours on Saturday nights.
Hebburn
The Good Life
KUA
KUA
ATGB
ATGB
Both KUA and ATGB have been running for decades. I adore ATGB but after watching a dozen times or so, you need something fresh! Season 2 of Hebburn will begin this weekend, and I'm glad for that but, The Good Life will run out in 2 weeks. Then what? More KUA??
Also, since the last pledge drive, they don't announce ANYTHING as for as Britcoms. Had I not subscribed to TVguide.com and had them on my watch list, I would not have known about new seasons of Doc Martin (Friday Night) and Hebburn. Would have been a bummer to miss them!
OK. Got it out of my system. They're still the only game in town for Britcoms, so I'll take the good with the bad.:(
