Bee Gees' Robin Gibb in coma, gravely ill
April 14, 2012

Bee Gees pop star Robin Gibb is in a coma in a London hospital, amid fears he has only days to live, according to reports.

Britain's The Sun newspaper says his family is keeping a bedside vigil for the 62-year-old star, who has been battling colon and liver cancer and now has pneumonia.

It is reported that family and fans of the Bee Gees were last night praying for the star's survival.

On Thursday Gibb's son said the singer would not be able to attend the premiere of their debut classical work, The Titanic Requiem.

Robin-John (RJ) Gibb, who worked on The Titanic Requiem with his father, said his family was hoping for "a speedy recovery".

"He is still in hospital, he's fighting infection and of course - as a lot of people who have family members or friends who endure cancer, they know - there are a lot of periphery problems afterwards they have to deal with," he told BBC Breakfast.

Ongoing health problems forced Gibb to miss the premiere of the Titanic work - to mark the centenary of the ship's ill-fated voyage - at London's Westminster City Hall.

"The one place he really wanted to be in two and and a half years and he couldn't be, and it was heartbreaking, but he'll be able to see it. It was recorded and live streamed," RJ said.

Gibb recently underwent surgery for an ongoing problem with a twisted bowel. The same hereditary intestinal condition led to the death of his twin brother, Maurice, at the age of 53.

Gibb appeared to have made a miracle recovery, but doctors now believe a secondary tumour is present.

Gibb's wife, Dwina, brother Barry, 65, daughter Melissa, 37, and sons Spencer, 39, and RJ, 29, were at his bedside in a private hospital in Chelsea in west London, according to The Sun.

Gibb's health problems began last October when he had emergency surgery to treat a blocked bowel.

Last month Gibb told The Sun: "I sometimes wonder if all the tragedies my family has suffered - like Andy and Maurice dying so young and everything that's happened to me recently - is a kind of karmic price we are paying for all the fame and fortune we've had."

Gibb also praised his wife, who has helped him fight his cancer fight.

She gave me health foods and brewed herb teas for me, alongside conventional treatment," he said.

This is not good.

Did I hear this right: Barbara Gibb, their mother, is still alive? It was in another thread.

Yes, Barbara Gibb is still alive (she's 91 - the Gibb patriarch, Hugh, died in 1992). I can't even imagine how she is feeling right now. She's already buried two sons and barring a miracle, might be doing it again soon...:(

All love and prayers to the Gibb family...I have ALWAYS been a huge fan of their music, ALL of it...Godspeed to Robin...:(

I hope that Robin will make a recovery. Its a shame that so much tragedy has hit one family. Though in the case of Andy if he had stayed away from drugs he would probably not have died.

I saw a photo of him in one of those tabloid papers recently and his face looked very thin. And he's certainly not old.

Here's one of Robin's finest vocal performances, from 1968:

Here are a few of Robin's solo performances from 1982-83 - all the songs came from his 1982 solo album How Old Are You?. With his hair here blond and kind of shaggy, he looks an awful lot like Andy.

Although you're right that Andy would probably still be alive if he had managed to stay away from drugs, it wasn't drugs that directly killed him in the end. He'd finally managed to kick his drug habit and had been clean for over a year before he died. What killed him was a chest infection, viral myocarditis, but his heart had probably been weakened due to his drug use, and it would be probably be fair to say that it was an indirect cause. I just wanted to clarify that, because at the time he died, there were a lot of false stories going around about how he'd died of a massive drug overdose.

I'm a huge fan of the Bee Gees and am very sad about this. I'm hoping for something miraculous, but it doesn't look good.

I guess Barry is going to join Brian Wilson in being the oldest brother to outlive all the others. Our thoughts are with you Robin.

By Courtney Garcia, TODAY.com contributor

Before slipping into a coma, legendary Bee Gees singer Robin Gibb reportedly was confident or hopeful enough to make a "bucket list" of things he hoped to accomplish, the U.K. Mirror reports.

Gibb was “scribbling ideas for songs and plans for the future in a notebook” as he began treatment for pneumonia in April, a source told the newspaper. The list reportedly included plans to start a children's charity involving music and also lyrics for future songs.

In 2010, the 62-year-old singer was diagnosed with colon cancer which later spread to his liver. Reuters reports that Gibb's wife Dwina, sons Spencer and Robin-John, daughter Melissa and brother Barry are currently keeping a bedside vigil.

In March, after his cancer went into remission, Gibb told The Sun he believed his illness could be the cost of lifelong success in the music business.

“I sometimes wonder if the tragedies my family has suffered are a kind of karmic price for all the fame and fortune the Bee Gees have had,” said the musician, whose brothers Maurice and Andy also died young. “The illness, and the untimely death of my brothers, has made me conscious of the fact that — rather than just think about it — it’s crucial that you do today what you want to do.”

He continued. “I’ve got a sense of urgency about life, rather than withdrawing from it and feeling depressed. Now I know how precious time is, and that you can’t put it in the bank. So, I intend to make the most of every single second of it that I’ve got left.”

Gibb’s 91-year-old mother, Barbara, has reportedly flown from the United States to England to be by his side. The Daily Record reports that she believes her family is “cursed, like the Kennedy dynasty.” A source told the news outlet that Barbara is “beside herself."

Robin Gibb Comes Out Of Coma

by: Dave Lifton

With all the bad news this week surrounding the deaths of Dick Clark and Levon Helm, we may have some good news. According to reports coming out of England, Robin Gibb of the Bee Gees, whose health had taken a turn for the worse in recent weeks, has come out of the coma he lapsed into last week.

“He’s moving his head and nodding,” Gibb’s wife Dwina said. “When we’re asking questions he’s responding to them. I can’t believe it”

Gibb was hospitalized last month due to correct a lifelong intestinal issue. Following the surgery, he contracted pneumonia and subsequently fell into a coma. Since then, his family, including his brother Barry, have held a vigil at his bedside.

“We’ve been playing music to him all along,” Dwina continued. “I thought he’d respond to it and, when they hooked him up to an ECG scanner, it showed he was. We’re very pleased. We think he might even talk once the tubes come out.”

The music Robin has responded to includes Barry’s singing and recorded music. Dwina said that Roy Orbison’s classic ‘Crying,’ fittingly, caused Gibb to weep.

Of course this does not mean that Gibb is out of the woods just yet. There is still a long road to recovery, and in his situation things could change at any moment. However, the fact that he has regained consciousness is a very good sign right now.

Praying he will make a good recovery. As others have said, so much tragedy in one family.

He seems to have a strong will to get through this. Hopefully that will lead him to recovery. If there's a chance he can survive and he's determined to go on, he might just make it.

One day at a time.

Did the brothers have a sister too? The pictures CATLOVER has shown are so cute. Could the gal at the far right with the red top be the sister?

It probably is their sister, Lesley. They only had one. If she was a wife or girlfriend, she'd most likely be pictured next to the man. That's great he's doing better.

As Janice said, they have a sister named Lesley. But, they also have a niece (Lesley's daughter) named Bernice "Beri" Barbara who was raised like a sister and adopted by her grandparents. She was very close to Andy. If you're interested in the full story, I recommend "The Ultimate Biography of The Bee Gees: Tales of Brothers Gibb" by Cook, Hughes and Bilyeu.

I found the picture on one of the Brothers Gibb official sites (I don't remember which one right now), but that lovely lady is indeed the eldest Gibb sibling, Lesley Gibb Evans. :D

I do get a kick of two of the photos you posted Catlover. The family seemed to like short white shorts. Even mama Gibb has her white shorts.

She and Andy were probably sort of close in age. Do you know why her grandparents adopted her?

Nice pictures, Monika!

From what I read, Lesley was very young when she gave birth to her first child, the father disappeared and her parents adopted the baby and raised her as their own. That was in the book gidgetgrape mentioned.
