View Full Version : Favorite Robert Stack moment?
SheRaaa 04-11-2012, 08:42 PM Of course, we all know Stack MADE this show. The man was beyond cool, a perfect host in an imperfect world
What are some of your favorite Robert Stack moments on UM?
I just watched the Comedy Store ghosts segment for the first time (found it surprisingly scary!), and loved the Stack bit at the end where he turns back and watches the bar stool move "by itself" across the stage, then turns to the camera and smiles. Stack-tastic!
WishfulDreamer 04-11-2012, 09:17 PM GREAT thread idea!
I love it when he is holding a dog in one episode.
When he glares about the KROQ DJs and says they were lying.
Pretty much anytime he says "inexplicably" "shockingly" or anything along those lines.
As for fashion, though I love the trench coat, the blazer and leather jacket make him look really badass.
TheCafeDisco 04-11-2012, 09:33 PM ROFL I love the way he says inexplicably! That's a good one
and for some reason when he says
"and once again (long dramatic pause) stuck in the mud"
RobinW 04-11-2012, 10:05 PM “A spiritualist told the Manns to pour salt all around the house. A number of snails were sacrificed."

Too many to name! I like when hes at Moss Beach and says "Ive been here all day and havent seen a thing!" haha:lol:
zack007attack 04-12-2012, 02:19 AM I enjoy moments when he's on screen and really immerses you into the case. Some of these moments include:
1) Eliot Ness-Stack mentions how he learned a lot about this famous lawman from his own portrayal during The Untouchables tv show back in the 60s.
2) Michael Swango-"Most of us tend to hold doctors to a higher standard, and perhaps that's fair. After all we are somtimes compelled to trust them implicitly, depending on their knowledge and expertise to save our lives. Did Michael Swango display that trust for his own sadistic pleasure?". I like this moment because of how effective it is at really grabbing your attention about the case.
3) Dexter Stefonek-"Many of us who have driven along a lonely stretch of highway, it is an unsettling feeling going miles without seeing other people, you know a cry for help would not be heard".
I know it is a non-UM moment, but Robert Stack was awesome as Agent Fleming in Beavis and Butt-head do America.
justins5256 04-12-2012, 07:15 AM I like how Stack referred to the guys who may have shot Jeremy Bright as a couple of "toughs".
TheCars1986 04-12-2012, 10:30 AM I like the way Stack pronounces words that begin with "wh".
MissFit29 04-12-2012, 12:16 PM I love the hands in pocket, tough guy stance with the killer stare that he assumed at the end of most of the show openings. John Walsh talks the talks, but Stack walked the walk.
Gelatinous Goo 04-12-2012, 01:23 PM ...anything ending in "oo", such as "poo-poo" or "goo".
Bonnie Wilder was poo-pooed for wearing a giant moo-moo. Inexplicably, the moo-moo disappeared...as if into thin air. Who stole the moo-moo...and why?
SheRaaa 04-12-2012, 07:20 PM Just thought of another one...when Stack says "unsuspecting nudists" in the nudist colony episode.
WishfulDreamer 04-12-2012, 08:51 PM Just thought of another one...when Stack says "unsuspecting nudists" in the nudist colony episode.
"While many of us may consider nudity offbeat..."
1990 UM fan 04-14-2012, 01:04 PM There was one part in an episode I laughed at. He said something like "...it was a gun gun" or something along those lines. I'm not sure if the video skipped or it was a small error on Stack's part, but I found it a little funny. I will remember him though for looking into the camera at the end of the show and saying "there is somebody, somewhere, who knows the truth. Perhaps...it's you!".
I also forgot to add that I liked the part where he walked past the exploding flame in the human combustion episode. Was he a boss or what?
MegtheEgg86 01-07-2014, 12:52 AM Brothers and sisters, I gotta resurrect this thread.
- Keith Reinhard segment: "Could these two disappearances, less than a year apart, be connected?" The soft, inquisitive inflection he puts on the last two words is gold.
- Gabby's locker: "Maybe he bought it in Wyoming--or Missouri--or maybe it was Oklahoma....Gabby just couldn't be sure." I actually lol'd at the way he said that one.
- His reading of Ecclesiastes 12:1-8 in the Chuck Morgan segment. I get literally get chills every single time.
- Any time there is an update and he says something to the effect of "___ was a suspect from the VERY BEGINNING", or "____ was a suspect EARLY in the investigation." There's almost this you-can't-pull-anything-over-on-us vibe to it. :p
WishfulDreamer 01-07-2014, 03:58 AM - Gabby's locker: "Maybe he bought it in Wyoming--or Missouri--or maybe it was Oklahoma....Gabby just couldn't be sure." I actually lol'd at the way he said that one.
I LOVE this one. Stack sounds like even he thinks Gabby's story is total baloney.
HarryWild 01-07-2014, 07:17 AM Robert Stack goes back to the early 40s in Hollywood movie making. He has no aged much from the 50s to the 90s. He was plays himself in his roles so; it like Clint Eastwood or Bruce Willis acting out a character. He come arounds as a hard nose individual with a certain physical presents that you don't want to cross!
DanCart 01-07-2014, 03:03 PM I like how Stack referred to the guys who may have shot Jeremy Bright as a couple of "toughs".
I liked that one too !
RobinW 01-07-2014, 05:24 PM Kevin Ryder and Gene Baxter deny all accusations that the "Confess Your Crime" phone call on their show was a hoax.
CUT TO:
A very pissed off-looking Robert Stack:
"Kevin Ryder and Gene Baxter were LYING!"

I liked that one too.
I also liked the part when he was introducing the Jeremy Bright segment about people not talking about the crime: They're not telling, but THEY KNOW." And at the end of the Dennis Depue story where he narrated the letter Depue wrote that said "a tooth for a tooth, an eye for an eye, a life for a life." I think that's how it went anyway.
Dr. Jazz 01-08-2014, 12:26 AM The first thing that popped in my head when I think of Stack quotes from the show was the beginning of the Moss Beach Ghosts segment when he said "I've been here all day and haven't seen a thing" lmao making it even funnier was that he was standing near the bar when he said it lol
Orgazmo 01-08-2014, 01:21 AM When he parodies himself in the BASEketball movie
MegtheEgg86 01-08-2014, 03:53 AM "Obviously guns just don't get up and walk off on their own."
"We scream, we jump, we laugh, and then we go home."
WishfulDreamer 01-08-2014, 05:53 AM One of the most hated segments, but I love all the Stack moments involved:
"A few words of warning before running off into the sunset to find love. Giving aphrodisiacs to anyone without their knowledge or consent is punishable by law. When in doubt, try a box of chocolates. Or a dozen roses." *cue big smile next to roses*
"Just one look at the succulent oysters provokes thoughts of sex."
schmave 01-08-2014, 11:44 AM One that sticks out to me is the Joe Shepard segment, when the Cathy Clowers case comes up. The line was, "Not only did he know Cathy Clowers ... he knew where she was buried! He offered to take them there!" Exclamation points for emphasis only, but the way it was said implied Stack couldn't believe it himself. Not the way he usually used his voice.
TheUntouchables 01-09-2014, 05:56 AM When he parodies himself in the BASEketball movie
This.
How he managed to do that scene with a straight face is impressive.

isotope 01-10-2014, 12:56 AM The story about that ludicrous Florida ghost nonsense. After reporting that a psychic had advised the homeowners to sprinkle salt around thir house, Stack announces "many snails were sacrificed..." with a magnificent deadpan delivery.
Also, I can't be the only one to have jumped out of their seat when Stack bellows "UPDATE!" without warning!

When UM was freely on YouTube, I would hook my laptop to the TV in my university apartment and doze on the couch. For one segment, the uploader had added a loud update with UM theme and Stack's voice. I nearly fell off the couch!
