View Full Version : Movies Not Released on DVD
JamesG 04-06-2012, 11:13 PM Top 15 Movies You Can’t Find on DVD
Feb 15, 2011
In the early 2000s, DVD technology gradually overtook VHS as the most popular consumer format for playback of pre-recorded video. Interestingly, the 2005 American crime film, A History of Violence, has the distinction of being the final major Hollywood motion picture released on VHS.
With the change, production companies were given the task of converting classic movies to DVD. It was a lucrative process for the film studios, and this is why we see almost every movie in DVD format.
As we travel into 2011, a large majority of people have tossed out their old VCRs. Everyone wants to enjoy the simplicity of a DVD player, as well as the HD picture quality, without spending a fortune on the VCR/Blu-ray combo player.
In the movie industry, certain companies (mainly Disney) use a practice called a moratorium, which is delaying or suspending the release of a DVD movie for a certain period of time. The process is used to make DVD copies rare and, in many cases, nonexistent.
People want to watch their favorite films on DVD. This is why groups of individuals regularly become upset when they can’t find their favorite movies in DVD format. The collective demand for a DVD release does not pass by movie executives, and every year old movies are converted to DVD.
This article will document fifteen pictures that need to be released on DVD.
The Wild Life (1984)
http://i879.photobucket.com/albums/ab358/JamesGrec1/IMG_0004.jpg
The Wild Life is a 1984 comedy-drama film, written by Cameron Crowe and directed by Art Linson. The movie examines the stereotypical teenage issues that you find in 1980s cinema.
The plot revolves around the characters of three teenagers living in the suburbs of Los Angeles. The Wild Life contains great character actor roles, and includes stars Eric Stoltz, Ilan Mitchell-Smith, Chris Penn, Randy Quaid, Rick Moranis and Lea Thompson.
In the film, the three boys set out for a night of fun at a strip bar and later have a large house party.
The Wild Life has faced copyright infringement lawsuits due to the music used in the film, and the picture is only available on VHS and Laserdisc, with stereo analog tracks. No DVD version has been released due to the objection of the artists on the soundtrack.
Some of these tracks include songs written and performed by Mick Jagger and Keith Richards, Madonna, Buffalo Springfield, Little Richard, Jimi Hendrix, Huey Lewis and Billy Idol.
In the middle of the 1980s, The Wild Life video tape was mass produced, so today you can find a copy of the VHS on EBay for less than $10.
*Update: Universal Vault Series released a DVD-R of The Wild Life August 2013.
Queen of Hearts (1989)
http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/41Cim0AynbL.jpg
Queen of Hearts is a film that tells the story of Eddie Luca, who is the youngest son in a family of Italian immigrants that has moved to London. The group travels with nothing, but soon opens a cafe in an Italian neighborhood.

Queen of Hearts was directed by Jon Amiel. It is a fun movie that can be enjoyed by the entire family. The film was released on VHS in 1989, but has not been converted to DVD.
In the early 1990s, Queen of Hearts was shown on PBS in the United States and many people regularly search the internet for the DVD.
On August 6, 2010, Queen of Hearts was played on the MGM HG channel. You can find a copy of the VHS on EBay for $20 and up.
*Update: Queen of Hearts was put to DVD in June 2011 from MGM's Limited Edition Collection.
Mr. Boogedy (1986)
http://i36.photobucket.com/albums/e10/JamesGrec/MRBoogedyphoto.png
Mr. Boogedy is a family film that originally aired as an episode of "The Disney Sunday Movie", on April 20, 1986.
The story follows a gag gift salesman and his family as they move into a new house in New England. The Davis family initially ignores strange sounds and sights in the house, suspecting their father’s practical jokes, but it soon becomes evident that the house is haunted by people that lived there 300 years ago.
The film stars John Astin, who is best known for his role as Gomez on the 1960s sitcom, "The Addams Family".
A sequel to the film, named Bride of Boogedy, aired on April 12, 1987.
It tells the continuing story of the Davis family and their encounters with the evil 300-year-old ghost. The film takes place in the fictional New England town of Lucifer Falls.
Unfortunately, Mr. Boogedy and Bride of Boogedy have never been released on DVD, and remain in the Disney Vault.
* Update: Mr. Boogedy / Bride of Boogedy was released as a double-feature DVD by the Disney Movie Club August 2015.
The Last Movie (1971)
http://i1331.photobucket.com/albums/w594/JamesGrec3/f252z0z9ngygupb_zps1oplqqo4.jpg
The Last Movie is a drama film that was written and directed by American actor Dennis Hopper.
In the movie, Hopper plays a stunt coordinator named Kansas, who is in charge of horses on a western film being shot in a small Peruvian village. Following a tragic incident on the set, where an actor is killed in a stunt, Kansas decides to quit the movie business and stay in Peru with a local woman. He thinks he has found paradise, but is soon called to help with a bizarre incident.
The Peruvian natives are “filming” their own movie with “cameras” made of sticks, and acting out real western movie violence, as they don’t understand movie fakery.
The Last Movie touches on ideas of fiction versus reality, especially in regards to cinema. It is presented in a way that challenges the viewer’s understanding of storytelling and includes several devices typically only seen behind the scenes of movies.
The film was initially a commercial failure, and led to Dennis Hopper’s virtual exile from Hollywood for over a decade. During the production of The Last Movie, Hopper was in a period of severe alcohol and drug abuse.
His mental state was recorded in an extremely rare and barely released documentary, called The American Dreamer.
The American Dreamer film is sharing this entry with The Last Movie, as the documentary has never been released on DVD and is impossible to find.
During his lifetime, Dennis Hooper was very proud of The Last Movie, and hosted several different private screenings. In 2006, Hopper told PLAYBOY that he had re-acquired the rights to the film and was planning on a DVD release.
Sadly, Dennis Hopper died by way of prostate cancer in May 2010 and the DVD release never happened.
Deadman's Curve (1978)
http://i879.photobucket.com/albums/ab358/JamesGrec1/1vidjandean.jpg
Deadman’s Curve is a made for TV movie based on the careers of Jan Berry and Dean Torrence, who made up the rock and roll duo Jan and Dean.
In 1964, Jan and Dean released the hit single 'Dead Man’s Curve', and two years later Jan Berry experienced a near-fatal car accident in his Corvette. The crash occurred in the proximity of the actual dead man’s curve that is referenced in the song. It is located in Los Angeles, California.
Jan suffered severe head injuries in the accident and the film documents his recovery from brain damage and partial paralysis. After the accident, a comeback into the music industry was slim, but Jan’s willingness and Dean’s support helped the men make a musical revival.
The film has appearances by Dick Clark, Wolfman Jack, Mike Love, Bruce Johnston and Jan Berry, himself (who, sadly, died in 2004).
It features a great soundtrack of Jan and Dean original recordings. Deadman’s Curve has never been released on DVD and the VHS tape is a hard find.
Captain EO (1986)
http://www.shoppingblog.com/pics/captain_eo_poster.jpg
Captain EO is a 3D film starring Michael Jackson and directed by Francis Ford Coppola. The name, Captain EO, was taken from the Greek goddess of dawn. The film’s executive producer was George Lucas. It was written by Rusty Lemorande, Lucas and Coppola.
Starting in 1986, Captain EO became a feature attraction at Disney theme parks. The movie is regarded as one of the first 4D films, 4D being the name given to a 3D movie which incorporates in-theater effects, such as lasers and starfields.
The experience is different from a modern day 3D film, as the lasers can bring the objects farther away from the screen, extending into the audience.
The movie tells the story of Captain EO and the crew of his spaceship on a mission to deliver a gift to the Supreme Leader. The movie’s special effects resulted in the seventeen-minute feature costing an estimated $30 million to produce. At the time, it was the most expensive movie ever made on a per-minute basis, averaging $1.76 million per minute.
Concurrent with the opening of the attraction, a behind the scenes documentary, entitled Captain EO: Backstage, was produced for television. The piece was hosted by Whoopi Goldberg and features interviews with cast, writers and the director.
The movie score for Captain EO was written by Titanic’s James Horner, and features two songs, 'We Are Here to Change the World' and 'Another Part of Me', both written and performed by Michael Jackson.
After the death of Michael Jackson on June 25, 2009, Captain EO regained popularity over the Internet. For several years, a small group of fans had petitioned Disney to bring back the attraction, and Jackson’s death brought the campaign to a peak.
In response, the film, now entitled Captain EO Tribute, re-opened at Disneyland Park, on February 23, 2010, after a sixteen year absence. It also returned to Discoveryland at Disneyland Park (Paris), Epcot at Walt Disney World and to Tokyo Disneyland.
However, the reason the film was originally stopped was cost, and the 2010 version does not include the in-theater lasers and starfield effects. If you were able to experience Captain EO from 1986-1998, you were lucky.
Captain EO has never been released on VHS or DVD.
People have attempted to convince Disney to create a DVD set with the film and the documentary.
Last Summer (1969)
http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_0yvJiYrSDfc/TTTe995OAhI/AAAAAAAAAFU/T33ECn199mw/s1600/summerposter.jpg
Last Summer is a 1969 coming-of-age movie about adolescent sexuality. It was directed by Frank Perry and filmed at various locations on Fire Island, in New York. In 1969, the movie was controversial and it gained an X rating.
Last Summer follows the random activities of four teenagers during a summer on Fire Island. As sexual tensions increase on the island, the more experienced and dominant girl, Sandy, encourages Dan and Peter to take advantage of Rhonda.
The character development in the movie is flawless.
During the film, the three teenagers explore their youthful sexuality and their individual personalities arise, with Sandy showing some psychotic tendencies. Rhoda is also staying on the island and looking for companionship. She forces herself into the wrong tangled group and Sandy takes a seductive mental control over the boys.
The memorable performance of Catherine Burns was nominated for an Academy Award.
Upon the movie’s VHS release, it was given an R rating after edits to the scene depicting rape were made. The VHS copies of the film are hard to find and will cost $50 and up.
Last Summer remains one of the most requested DVD releases.
So Big (1953)
http://s3.amazonaws.com/plexus_ent/posters/movie_77871.jpg
The oldest film on the list is the 1953 drama, So Big. The movie’s screenplay was written by John Twist, and is based on the 1924 novel by Edna Ferber.
The story follows Selina Peake and her life journey. Selina is a talented musician that has a pure taste for the arts. After her father’s death, Selina travels to a small community outside of Chicago. She marries a man named Pervus DeJong and the two have a son named Dirk, but as he grows older the boy is given the nickname So Big.
When Dirk is eight years old, Pervus dies and Selina is left to struggle for money. At this time, she begins her quest to grow high quality vegetables and provides for her child, ultimately guiding Dirk’s life until he graduates from college as an architect.
It is an inspirational story with a good message. The movie has withstood the test of time and is highly entertaining.
Unlike other films on this list, you can’t even find a VHS copy of So Big, so don’t plan on watching the movie anytime soon.
Treasure Island (1990)
http://i1331.photobucket.com/albums/w594/JamesGrec3/7f4372e2-a9d1-42c4-ba70-fd4feacf01ee_zpsm3zlwfw1.jpg
Treasure Island is a made for television movie that aired on January 22, 1990. It is an adaptation of Robert Louis Stevenson’s famous 1883 novel.
The story revolves around a young boy named Jim Hawkins (Christian Bale), who discovers a treasure map and embarks on a journey to find the loot. Upon arriving at the mysterious island, the ship’s cook and scaliwag, Long John Silver (Charlton Heston), leads a mutiny of crew members who want the treasure for themselves.
Jim helps the Squire and Espaniola officers to survive the mutiny and fight back against Silver’s men, who have taken over the ship.
The movie is a great adaptation of the novel, with good acting, and an adventurous theme. It was filmed in 1989, on location in Cornwall, England, Jamaica, and at Pinewood Studios in Buckinghamshire, England.
This version of the story is noted for its faithfulness to the book, with much of the dialogue coming directly from it. It also removes several violent scenes to make the movie more children friendly. The film’s music was composed by Paddy Moloney, who is the leader of the Irish folk music group The Chieftains.
Despite its cult status, Treasure Island has yet to see a DVD release. The video, now out of print, can be found on various websites and usually costs $20 and up.
*Update: Treasure Island was put to DVD in September 2011 from Turner Home Ent.
The World's Greatest Sinner (1962)
http://i36.photobucket.com/albums/e10/JamesGrec/worlds-greatest-sinner-1.jpg
The World’s Greatest Sinner is an underground film, written, directed and starring the character actor, Timothy Carey. The movie established Carey as an important figure in independent film.
The self-financed movie tells the story of an average man, Clarence Hilliard, who quits his day job as an insurance salesman to form a rock band. Hilliard finds that he can whip crowds into frenzy with his wild performances, so he takes advantage of the situation by turning his fan base into a political party.
He eventually forms a religious cult based on the premise that every man is God. As Clarence grows more powerful he becomes detached from reality, eventually insisting upon being called God with a capital “G” (God Hilliard), and having his followers worship him as such.
He personally challenges the God of the Bible.
The World’s Greatest Sinner has never had an official release, although it has aired on the Turner Classic Movies channel. The film originally achieved cult status through repeated screenings at the “midnight movies” in Los Angeles during the 1960s.
It features a musical score that was composed by a very young Frank Zappa. Martin Scorsese has selected the film as one of his favorite Rock and Roll movies of all time.
Update: Absolute Films released a DVD-R of The World's Greatest Sinner May 2013.
A New Leaf (1971)
http://i36.photobucket.com/albums/e10/JamesGrec/6c93d13a-46a9-4ae4-9570-bbd556569ffe_zps97297738.jpg
A New Leaf is a dark comedy based on the short story The Green Heart, by Jack Ritchie. The movie stars Elaine May, Walter Matthau, George Rose and James Coco.
The story revolves around Henry Graham, who is a man that has run through his entire inheritance, and is completely unequipped to provide for himself. Henry is completely unwilling to complete the only solution he sees suitable, which is suicide. Instead he devises a plan with the help of his imaginative butler.
The film was a critical success upon its initial release and is now considered a cult classic. However, despite several good reviews and award nominations, A New Leaf performed poorly at the box office and remains little known by the general public. It is one of the funniest films of the last forty years that nobody has seen.
A New Leaf has never been released on DVD, but you can purchase the VHS online from various websites.
*Update: A New Leaf was put to Blu-ray/DVD in September 2012 from Olive Films.
Dudes (1987)
http://i879.photobucket.com/albums/ab358/JamesGrec1/movieweek297.jpg

Along the trip, the pair embraces the western culture and must take revenge against a group of rednecks for killing their friend.
Dudes is a lighthearted road comedy that keeps the viewer interested. It has been praised for a good script, beautiful scenery and strong editing. Lions Gate has yet to announce any plans to release the film on DVD, most likely due to music copyrights.
The VHS copy of Dudes is available online for a reasonable price.
No Holds Barred (1989)
http://oldies.s3.amazonaws.com/i/boxart/simu/95/651191950652.jpg
When examining the shrinking world of lucrative VHS videos, wrestling events stand out. People like to watch old WWF wrestling promotions, events and videos. In the history of the World Wrestling Entertainment Company, run by Vince McMahon, the business has faced many copyright infringement cases.
In 2002, the WWF was forced to change their name and stop trading WWF merchandise. Additionally, the court required the company to remove both auditory and visual references to “WWF” in its library of video footage (1979-2002), outside of the United Kingdom. This doesn’t mean the company lost the rights to the videos, but it does make it so the old wresting events don’t make it to DVD, thus raising the VHS prices immensely.
The World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) video library is currently the largest collection of professional wrestling videos and copyrights in the world. It is comprised of professional wrestling promotions dating back to the 1940s.
As of 2011, the library stands at over 100,000 hours of content, including weekly television shows, pay-per-views, and recorded house shows. The collection represents a very significant portion of the visual history of modern professional wrestling.
Although not wrestling content, the library includes footage from various WWF/E produced ventures, including the 1985-1987 cartoon series "Hulk Hogan’s Rock ‘n’ Wrestling" and the 1989 film No Holds Barred.
No Holds Barred is a movie that was launched in an attempt to boost Hulk Hogan’s acting career several years after his appearance in Rocky III.
In the film, Hulk Hogan plays Rip, a very popular professional wrestler. Rip looks and acts like a brute, but he is actually a good-hearted guy. The movie is concluded with Rip facing off in a deadly match against the hardened wrestler Zeus.
No Holds Barred: The Match/The Movie is a wrestling event that was shown on pay-per-view on December 27, 1989. The program consisted of the film in its entirety, followed by a match with the movie’s stars, including Hogan.
In all, the movie was a commercial failure, but has gained a significant following over the years. No Holds Barred has never been released on DVD and a VHS copy sells for a good price.
However, the VHS was mass produced and other WWF videos are much more collectible and valuable.
*Update: No Holds Barred was put to DVD in July 2012 from WWE Home Video.
Song of the South (1946)
http://www.movieposter.com/posters/archive/main/16/b70-8457
In the year following the official end of World War II, the Walt Disney Company released a film named Song of the South. The movie is a mix of live action and animation.
It is based on the fictional character of Uncle Remus. Uncle Remus was made famous in a collection of African American folktales adapted and compiled by Joel Chandler Harris, in 1880. The stories are told in Harris’s version of a Deep South slave dialect, which was adapted for the Disney movie.
The live actors provide a frame story, in which Uncle Remus relates the folk tales and the adventures of Brer Rabbit and his friends. In the film’s most famous scene, the animated animals and Uncle Remus sing the classic song 'Zip-a-Dee-Doo-Dah', which won the 1947 Academy Award for Best Song.
The movie inspired the Disney theme park attraction Splash Mountain.
Song of the South has been re-released in theaters several times (most recently in 1986), but Disney Enterprises has avoided making the complete version of the film directly available on home video in the United States.
This is because the story was deemed controversial by studio management. Disney executives think the movie will be construed by some as racist toward black people, and is thus subject to much internet rumor. Some portions of the film have been issued on VHS and DVD as part of either compilations or special editions of Disney films.
In late 2010, Disney released a statement indicating a possible upcoming release.
“I can say there’s been a lot of internal discussion about 'Song of the South', and at some point we’re going to do something about it. I don’t know when, but we will. We know we want people to see 'Song of the South' because we realize it’s a big piece of company history, and we want to do it the right way.”
The movie is probably the most discussed film that has not been officially released on DVD. It was recently featured in the ListVerse article discussing ridiculous cases of political correctness.
Song of the South has been released on video in its entirety in various European, Latin American and Asian countries. In the UK it was put out on VHS tape in 1982, and again in 1991. These tapes are highly collectible and can bring $25 and more on Ebay.
For the time being, Song of the South remains locked in the Disney Vault, along with many other classics that have never been released on DVD.
JamesG 04-06-2012, 11:15 PM Rad (1986)
http://i879.photobucket.com/albums/ab358/JamesGrec1/rad-poster.jpg
Many internet groups are demanding the release of the 1986 BMX racing movie, Rad to DVD.
Rad is a film that focuses on Cru Jones, who is a young BMX racer living in a small town with his mother and sister. In the movie, Cru is faced with a tough decision, the qualifying races for the Helltrack bike competitions are on the same day as his SATs, which he must take in order to attend college.
Winning Helltrack means a lucrative sponsorship deal and fame. Racers from all around travel to the small town to participate in the competition and Cru meets Christian Hollings, who becomes his girlfriend.
While the film was critically bombarded by the media, it has developed quite a following. Parts of the movie were filmed at Cochrane High School in Cochrane, Alberta, Canada.
Rad was released at a time when competitive bike racing was in its infancy, and the film has been credited with helping put a generation of kids on the bike. Today, Action Sports and the X Games are a largely competitive and growing market.
In 1986, Rad was released on VHS and laserdisc. At that time, the film became a top-ten video rental in the United States for two years. However, the movie has never been released on DVD. This has made the VHS copy of the film valuable.
Copies of the Rad VHS routinely sell for $25 and more on EBay. The soundtrack is also highly collectible because it was only released on 12″ vinyl and cassette.
Various illegal and bootlegged DVD copies of the movie have been sold over the internet.
* The Keep (1983)
http://i879.photobucket.com/albums/ab358/JamesGrec1/51BV1P1NWEL_SS500_.jpg
The Keep is a horror film that was directed by Michael Mann.
The movie focuses on a deserted citadel in WWII Romania, in which an entrapped and dangerous entity named Radu Molasar lives. When the German Wehrmacht occupies the castle to control the Dinu Mountain Pass, the creature is unwittingly unleashed from the deep. The pure destruction puts the Nazi soldiers into an uneasy alliance with a Jewish professional.
Despite being a critical and commercial failure, the movie has gained a cult following over the years. This is mostly due to the movie’s music score by Tangerine Dream, and the bizarre mixture of Gothic horror and World War II elements.
The Keep was released on laserdisc and VHS, but an official DVD version of the movie has never been released.
http://listverse.com/2011/02/11/top-15-movies-you-cant-find-on-dvd/
Vahan 04-06-2012, 11:58 PM Of the ones on this list, my favorite is Song of the South. It seems to me that it has an acquired taste. Some people don't care much for the film, but love the animation segments, however.
I loved the film from beginning to end. And Bobby Driscoll, I felt, shined in his first Disney role. Also, James Baskett, who played Uncle Remus, was only the second black African-American to win an Oscar (an Honorary Oscar to be more precise).
Torgo 04-07-2012, 09:39 AM I have The Wild Life on Laser, still surprising it hasn't at least gotten one of those bare-bones DVD releases.
Would love to see The Keep get a DVD release, I have a long list of horror flicks needing DVD or Blu-Ray releases.
There's a long list of classic films too that still haven't gotten a proper release.
Torgo 04-09-2012, 09:29 AM Some films I'd love to see get a DVD release-
Rubin And Ed '91- Quirky and surreal buddy comedy teaming up Howard Hesseman and Crispen Glover.
Purple Haze '82- Set during the Vietnam War, a young man moves back home after getting kicked out of college, deals with life at home, and the prospect of going to Vietnam.

Static '85. A young man working at a factory, makes an invention that he claims shows images of Heaven. Keith Gordon, Amanda Plummer.
(Amazon is listing this on DVD, but it looks like a bad bootleg)
Nothing Lasts Forever '84- Surreal fantasy comedy about an artist who discovers the homeless control Destiny, and a bus that travels to the moon. Zach Galligan, Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd.
The Cassidy Kids '06- In the 80's a group of kids solve a murder and become overnight celebrities. A Saturday Morning kids show is created based on them. In the present a DVD set of the series is being put out and the group(now adults) gather together to supply interviews. During flashbacks we learn things didn't quite happen the way everyone thought.
A few horror flicks-
The Forgotten One '89. A troubled writer moves into an old house that he finds out is haunted, and he has a link to the past. Terry O'Quinn, Kristy McNichol.

(Amazon has a DVD, but sounds like it's a PAL, and a bad transfer)
Eyes Of Fire '83- During the 1700's, a preacher and his followers try to find a new home to settle. They find themselves in a haunted valley.
JamesG 04-09-2012, 01:26 PM Purple Haze '82- Set during the Vietnam War, a young man moves back home after getting kicked out of college, deals with life at home, and the prospect of going to Vietnam.
I found this website that says you can contact the director of the film for a DVD copy.

Torgo 04-10-2012, 08:43 AM That reminds me, the director of the mid 80's schlock-fest Attack Of The Beast Creatures offered the film on DVD at his site a few years ago, but by the time I heard about it it was too late, he had already shut the site down.
Torgo 04-12-2012, 09:12 AM More horror I'd like to see get DVD/Blu-Ray releases-
Ghost Town '88
Blood Games '91
The Boogens

JamesG 04-12-2012, 01:17 PM The Boogens
There were recent reports, from March, that Olive Films has acquired the rights to a bunch of films; one of which is this one.

Excellent. As long as it isn't just a VHS transfer like with the Curtains DVD release I'll be happy.

Next Of Kin(!984 Aussie horror)
Dark Age(Late 80's giant croc flick)
Remote Control(late 80's comedy directed by Jeff Lieberman- Just Before Dawn, Blue Sunshine)
JamesG 04-12-2012, 05:19 PM I'm surprised that Babes in Toyland never had a DVD release.
It has a well-known cast:
Drew Barrymore
Keanu Reeves
Richard Mulligan
Pat Morita

JamesG 04-12-2012, 05:31 PM There are also a lot of the Skinemax erotica flicks that I wish to see put to DVD.
They have released some of the popular ones, like Playmate of the Apes, but there are a few from the late 90's - early 2000s I want to see released.
I've been looking around for years and not many private collectors have the films that only aired once and that was it.
Vahan 04-12-2012, 05:33 PM Doesn't help that the VHS version of Babes in Toyland '86 is the severely edited version, as the original, full-length one, has not been seen since its original NBC airing.
JamesG 04-13-2012, 12:46 AM Doesn't help that the VHS version of Babes in Toyland '86 is the severely edited version, as the original, full-length one, has not been seen since its original NBC airing.

Linnea Quigley's Horror Workout Makes its DVD Debut
by Ryan Turek
4/3/13
Back in the '80s and early-'90s, Linnea Quigley ruled the horror scream queen scene. When she wasn't starring in films like Night of the Demons or Return of the Living Dead, she was doing oddball efforts like Linnea Quigley's Horror Workout.
Some of us still own this on VHS, however, it's making its way to DVD for the first time. It's up for pre-sale now with copies shipping April 11th.
http://www.legacyfeatures.com/purchase.php
Directed by Kenneth J. Hall and starring Quigley, the workout tape was originally released in 1990 and features special effects from Cleve Hall (TV’s "Monster Man").
A campy, gory parody of the workout videos of the '80s, the film was created to capitalize on Quigley’s explosive popularity and rabid fan base. In it, Quigley teaches a bevy of big-haired, lingerie-clad beauties the proper way to tone and stretch, while a masked killer stalks them one by one.
She also takes time out to show an army of out-of-shape, flesh-eating zombies the best ways to keep fit.
A first run Limited Edition of 1,000 units will come with a numbered 5x7 photo signed by Linnea Quigley and Kenneth J. Hall. This package includes a digital re-mastering of the original uncut version of the film, presented with a 5.1 DTS-HD Master Audio, as well as the following special features:
- Audio Commentary with Director Kenneth J. Hall
- New Retrospective Featurette with Cast & Crew including Stars Linnea Quigley, Cleave Hall, David Deceatou, Director Kenneth J. Hall and others!
- Original Theatrical Trailer
- Lobby Card Personally Autographed by Kenneth J. Hall and Linnea Quigley
- Still Gallery

Torgo 04-03-2013, 03:11 PM ^ Unless it's outrageously priced I'll be picking that up, granted when I bought the VHS from the back of Fangoria Magazine I was into all things Linnea. Too bad Linnea wasn't part of the commentary.
Vahan 04-03-2013, 03:18 PM Anyone ever heard of The Gong Show Movie? It was a 1980 box office dud that went into a fictional week into the life of its creator and host, Chuck Barris.
The film featured highlights from 4 years of the show, including the uncensored version of Jaye P. Morgan flashing for the cameras. I also believe it was the first motion picture produced by a game show production company, in this case, Chuck Barris Productions (Universal Pictures distributed it).
The film was never released on ANY home video format (including DVD), but it does turn up occasionally on cable TV.

Torgo 04-08-2013, 11:06 AM Vermillion Eyes (1991) - As far as I know this has never gotten an official release on any format. Back in 2004, Image Entertainment had planned on releasing it on DVD( they had it digitally remastered, audio commentary, and other extras already done) along with writer/director Nathan Schiff's other films(Weasels Rip My Flesh, Long Island Cannibal Massacre, They Don't Cut The Grass Anymore), but due to some of the content they decided not to release it.
Having seen the film, it's no more graphic than other films that have gotten released, it might be because of the way it's shown and the film's totally downbeat feel.

MacLeaper 04-08-2013, 04:07 PM Here's one that for the longest time was released on VHS, but not on DVD- and the VHS was quite expensive to procure.
http://www.amazon.com/High-Road-China-Tom-Selleck/dp/B00744WZ6W/ref=sr_1_1?s=movies-tv&ie=UTF8&qid=1365451411&sr=1-1&keywords=High+Road+to+China
Tom Selleck made a movie in 1983 called "High Road to China" and it was very similar in vein to the Indiana Jones movies- which, as some movie fans may know, he may well have wound up being the star of said movies- (he was originally slated to play Indiana Jones in "Raiders Of The Lost Ark") but his contract with "Magnum, P.I." prevented him from doing so initially. (Though later on it turned out that he would have had enough time to make the movie, but it's just as well- I couldn't picture anyone but Harrison Ford as Indiana Jones now anyway.)
Tom Selleck got another chance to reference this in an 8th. season episode of "Magnum, P.I." called "Raiders Of A Lost Art"
:)
Thankfully, now this movie is released on both VHS and DVD and so hopefully it can be found for a reasonable price.
JamesG 09-14-2014, 06:50 AM I saw this NY Post article posted June 2014 on movies not yet released on DVD or are currently out-of-print.
Some of the movies may have been mentioned previously in the thread:
http://nypost.com/2014/06/18/64-clips-of-movies-you-cant-find-on-dvd/
Greed (1924)
Legendary silent melodrama directed by Erich Von Stroheim and drastically cut at the behest MGM suits, it was reconstructed using stills for VHS — but needs more work for a DVD release.
Available for streaming at YouTube; a Spanish import DVD sells for $200.
The Crowd (1928)
In one of the most famous late silent films, King Vidor follows the lives of an ordinary Manhattan couple to devastating effect.
The Greene Murder Case (1929)
Before gaining immortality as Nick Charles in the Thin Man movies, William Powell clinched stardom in three (frustratingly unavailable) early talkies as sleuth Philo Vance.
Dynamite (1929)
A socialite marries a condemned prisoner to inherit a fortune in this wild Cecil B. DeMille melodrama, and you can guess the rest.
Currently being restored.
A House Divided (1931)
A young John Huston collaborated on the screenplay for this Eugene O’Neill knockoff starring his father, Walter Huston.
Also MIA is their collaboration from the following year, Law and Order.
Daughter of the Dragon (1931)
Anna May Wong, the most prominent Chinese actress of Hollywood’s Golden Era, starred in this sequel to The Return of Dr. Fu Manchu, which has shown on TCM.
Among her many missing titles on DVD are Dangerous to Know, King of Chinatown and When Were You Born.
Sherlock Holmes (1932)
British actor Clive Brook plays the legendary sleuth for the third and last time in this adaptation of William Gillette’s play, which hasn’t surfaced since the 1970s.
Once in a Lifetime (1932)
Hilarious spoof of Hollywood’s transition to sound, a predecessor of Singin’ in the Rain, is based on a play by George S. Kaufman and Moss Hart.
It showed on TV once, on PBS in the 1970s.
Call Her Savage (1932)
None of silent hottie Clara Bow’s talkies are on DVD — this one, recently restored by MoMA, is a real jaw-dropper.
Fox Cinema Archives released it on DVD-R 7/29/14.
Letty Lynton (1932)
The Holy Grail of unavailable movies was pulled from circulation by MGM in 1935 to settle a plagiarism suit.
Current owner Warner has been trying to come to terms with the plaintiffs’ heirs.
Man's Castle (1933)
Spencer Tracy and Loretta Young cohabit without the benefit of matrimony in Central Park in this Frank Borzage gem.
The many missing early Tracys on DVD include Sky Devils (1932), a Howard Hughes production that recycles aerial footage from Hell’s Angels.
The Story of Temple Drake (1933)
Pre-code melodrama from a novel by William Faulkner is notorious for its rape scene.
Restored by MoMA and has shown on TV, but never legally available on any video format.
I Am Suzanne! (1933)
Hands down, the best puppet-themed live-action musical you’ll ever see, starring Lilian Harvey as a crippled dancer.
Restored by MoMA.
Viva Villa! (1934)
Wallace Beery plays the Mexican icon in this biopic co-directed by Howard Hawks. Warner Bros. is hunting down scenes that were trimmed after enforcement of the Production Code.
Another missing Beery from the previous year is Raoul Walsh’s The Bowery (1933) co-starring George Raft.
So Red the Rose (1935)
Margaret Sullavan and Randolph Scott in a Civil War romance whose failure scared the major studios away from buying Gone With the Wind.
The Story of Louis Pasteur (1936)
Paul Muni won his Best Actor Oscar for this biopic of the scientist, which is reportedly in sorry shape.
Many unavailable Munis include The Valiant (1929), which popped up last year on TCM, and The Woman I Love (1937) — the latter’s rights issues so severe it’s apparently never been shown on TV, ever.
The Moon's Our Home (1936)
Formerly married Henry Fonda and Margaret Sullavan are charming in this screwball comedy directed by the underrated William Seiter.
Is on VHS.
7th Heaven (1937)
Remake of a famous silent romance is entertaining despite the miscasting of James Stewart as a Parisian sewer cleaner.
High, Wide, and Handsome (1937)
Jerome Kern musical set in turn of the 20th century Pennsylvania, starring Irene Dunne and Randolph Scott.
The Road Back (1937)
The sequel to the Oscar-winning All Quiet on the Western Front has never even been on American TV, apparently because of issues with the estate of author Erich Maria Remarque.
Universal is said to hold an uncensored version of this post World War I drama, which was drastically cut at the demand of German officials.
One of numerous films directed by James Whale that are unavailable on DVD, including the screwball mystery Remember Last Night?.
The Hurricane (1937)
The great John Ford directs this spectacular disaster movie that’s been out of print on DVD since its release back in 1999.
Other MIA Ford talkies include Salute (1929), The Plough and the Stars (1936, available to stream on Vudu), Submarine Patrol (1938) and his final film, 7 Women (1966).
Boy Meets Girl (1938)
James Cagney and Pat O’Brien play bad-boy screenwriters in this snappy adaptation of a censor-baiting Hollywood spoof from Broadway, which is being restored.
Cagney’s Blonde Crazy (1931) is in the works, but there are right issues blocking Ceiling Zero (1936) and Come Fill the Cup (1951).
The Adventures of Tom Sawyer (1938)
Mark Twain’s classic, shot in lush three-strip Technicolor under the auspices of producer David O. Selznick.
Also MIA: the black-and-white B-movie Tom Sawyer, Detective from the same year, starring Donald O’Connor.
Five Came Back (1939)
Lucille Ball and a cast of character actor greats crash land in a jungle filled with cannibals in this classic B-movie that is sad shape and has been undergoing restoration for years.
They Knew What They Wanted (1940)
Farmer Charles Laughton has problems with mail-order bride Carole Lombard in this long-MIA version of Sidney Howard’s Pultizer prizewinning play.
An earlier version starring Edward G. Robinson, A Lady to Love, is also in legal limbo.
Sun Valley Serenade (1941)
Ice skating superstar Sonja Henie’s musicals finally begin turning up on DVD last year from the Fox Cinema Archives.
But not this one, which is probably her best.
Hellzapoppin' (1941)
The Olsen and Johnson comedy classic has never had an authorized release because it’s unclear who holds the rights to the original stage show.
No rights issues for their even funnier follow-up, Crazy House (1943) but it’s MIA as well.
The Sea Wolf (1941)
Edward G. Robinson and John Garfield star in this classic version of the Jack London story, which has been held back from DVD release because of missing scenes.
Forever and a Day (1943)
An all-star Anglo-American cast appeared in this story of an English home through several generations, which was a fund-raiser for British war relief.
The long out-of-print DVD from 1998 sells for $98 on Amazon.
Dixie (1943)
Bing Crosby was at the height of his stardom when this lavish period Technicolor musical was released.
Universal originally announced it was going to be part of a 2010 Crosby set, but then pulled it — possibly because of a blackface segment.
Christmas Holiday (1944)
Musical star Deanna Durbin plays a thinly disguised prostitute with a homicidal ex-husband (Gene Kelly) in this musical melodrama with impressive credits:
Noir master Robert Siodmak directed from a script from Herman Mankiewicz (Citizen Kane) and author Somerset Maugham.
Lady in the Dark (1944)
Lavish Technicolor musical from a Broadway hit, starring Ginger Rogers as a romantically confused magazine editor.
Reportedly there are issues with the Kurt Weill-Ira Gershwin score.
Home Sweet Homicide (1946)
Peggy Ann Garner and a couple of other kids help detective Randolph Scott solve a murder in this cute adaptation of Craig Rice’s cute comedy-mystery novel.
Margie (1946)
Charming comedy about a 1920s high school student (Jeanne Crain) who develops a crush on her French teacher (Glenn Langan).
No authorized video release ever.
Centennial Summer (1946)
Several Otto Preminger films have recently arrived on DVD via the Fox Cinema Archives, but not this Jerome Kern musical modeled after Meet Me in St. Louis.
Preminger’s 1975 thriller Rosebud is available only as a download.
To Each His Own (1946)
Olivia De Havilland won her first Best Actress Oscar for this classy soap opera.
Also unavailable: director Mitchell Leisen’s I Wanted Wings with William Holden.
Song of the South (1946)
Disney executives have blocked any legal US release of this racially controversial children’s movie since its last theatrical run in 1986.
The Great Gatsby (1949)
Alan Ladd is perhaps the definitive Jay Gatsby in this noirish free adaptation of the Fitzgerald classic, which is unavailable because of tangled ownership.
Beyond the Forest (1949)
Bette Davis fans have been clamoring for years for her final film under contract to Warner Bros., where she growls “What a dump!’’ but there are rights issues holding it up.
She is well-represented on DVD, but her debut Bad Sister (1931), with Humphrey Bogart in his second screen appearance, is still MIA.
Deadline U.S.A. (1952)
Humphrey Bogart plays a crusading managing editor whose newspaper may go out of business in the only one of his 1950s movies that’s not on DVD.
Announced by the Fox Cinema Archives last year, it was pulled for rights issues.
Other missing Bogies include The Big Shot (1942), his last gangster film released just ahead of Casablanca.
The Lusty Men (1952)
A restoration has been in the works for years for Nicholas Ray’s never-on-video rodeo drama with Robert Mitchum and Susan Hayward.
It's set for release from the Warner Archive on 9/16/14.
Ray’s final feature, 55 Days at Peking (1963) is available on DVD only as an import.
The Crimson Pirate (1952)
Warner Bros. released this Burt Lancaster pirate classic on DVD in 2003.
It was pulled when the rights expired.
So Big! (1953)
The better of two screen versions of Edna Ferber’s generation-spanning novel stars Jane Wyman.
Also MIA is a 1932 version starring Barbara Stanwyck, with an appearance by a pre-stardom Bette Davis.
The First Traveling Saleslady (1956)
Clint Eastwood gets “and introducing’’ billing as Carol Channing’s Texas Ranger boyfriend in this Ginger Rogers comedy.
Beau James (1957)
Bob Hope plays ‘20s New York City mayor Jimmy Walker in this engaging biopic, the only one of his 1950s films unavailable on DVD.
Raintree County (1957)
This Civil War roadshow romantic epic in the Gone With the Wind mold starring Elizabeth Taylor and Montgomery Clift is also in need of an expensive restoration.
Available only on Asian imports of dubious legality.
The Last Time I Saw Archie (1961)
Jack Webb’s final theatrical feature before he focused on TV is a service comedy with Robert Mitchum getting top billing.
“Currently unavailable’’ at Amazon Instant streaming.
The Great Impostor (1961)
Tony Curtis gives one of his best performances in this fact-based predecessor to Catch Me If You Can.
Also MIA is another fine biopic Curtis made just before this, The Outsider, in which he played a World War II hero at Iwo Jima. Both available only on pricey VHS or foreign imports.
The Wonderful World of the Brothers Grimm (1962)
The first non-travelogue filmed in three-panel Cinerama — starring Laurence Harvey and Karl Boehm as the fairy tale spinners — requires an expensive restoration.
The Italian DVD, like the previous VHS and TV version, apparently derives from the simultaneously-shot non-Cinerama version.
Freud (1962)
Montgomery Clift plays the father of psychiatry in this biopic directed by the great John Huston.
Available only as a Spanish import.
Circus World (1964)
The only major John Wayne film not available on DVD in the US, though it can be purchased as an import from Asia.
Pretty much all of the Duke’s many other films are out on DVD, notably excepting a half-dozen non-Western B’s he made at Universal from 1936 to 1937: Sea Spoilers, Conflict, California Straight Ahead!, I Cover the War, Adventure’s End.
The Naked Runner (1967)
Frank Sinatra stars in this spy thriller produced by his own company, which has been tied up for years because of rights issues.
The VHS sells for $207 on Amazon.
Taking Off (1971)
The acclaimed American debut of director Miloš Forman (Amadeus) is a comedy about middle-aged parents (Buck Henry, Lynn Carlin) who search for their daughter in the counter-culture.
French Blu-ray only.
Play It As It Lays (1972)
Frank Perry’s much-requested version of Joan Didion’s novel about a Hollywood actress having a breakdown has never been legally available in any video format anywhere.
Perry’s equally unavailable Last Summer (1969) is reportedly being prepped for its belated video debut, however.
92 in the Shade (1975)
Thomas McGuane directs this frequently hilarious adaptation of his novel set in Key West, Fla., starring Peter Fonda, Warren Oates and Margo Kidder.
Streaming only.
Looking for Mr. Goodbar (1977)
Schoolteacher Diane Keaton looks for sadomasochistic love in all the wrong Manhattan places in this time capsule of a movie directed from a then-notorious novel by Judith Rossner, with Richard Gere’s first important role.
Copies of the VHS go for $67 on Amazon.
Movie Movie (1978)
Stanley Donen (Singin’ in the Rain) directs this “Grindhouse’’-style tribute to 1930s Warner Bros. films consisting of a boxing movie and a musical, plus trailers, all starring George C. Scott and Art Carney.
Available only as an Amazon digital download.
Fedora (1978)
Director Billy Wilder revisits the themes of his Sunset Boulevard in this black comedy about a down-on-his-luck producer (William Holden) trying to entice a long-ago star (Marthe Keller) into a comeback.
It was announced for release by Olive Films four years ago, but there were apparently issues with missing scenes. It will reportedly be released by them on DVD/Blu-ray on 10/28/14.
Also MIA on DVD: Wilder’s last film, Buddy Buddy (1981) starring Jack Lemmon and Walter Matthau, blocked by rights issues.
Little Darlings (1980)
Tatum O’Neal and Kristy McNichol compete in summer camp to see who can lose her virginity first. It’s run in heavy rotation on TV for decades and a used VHS copy fetches $50-and-up.
But no DVD and no streaming.
The Keep (1983)
That year’s big Christmas flop, directed by Michael Mann, stars Ian McKellen as a Jewish professor forced by Nazis to help keep evil spirits at bay during World War II.
Despite an avid cult following, it’s available only for streaming.
Nothing Lasts Forever (1984)
Despite a cast that includes Bill Murray and Dan Aykroyd as well as a premiere at the Cannes Film Festival, this futuristic comedy has never had a proper US theatrical release, let alone one on video.
It has sold out sporadic screenings in recent years, and Warner Bros. prepared a new master a few years ago. So here’s hoping.
The Glass Menagerie (1987)
Paul Newman directed this version of the Tennessee Williams classic starring Karen Allen and John Malkovich.
Also unavailable is the better-known 1950 edition with Kirk Douglas and Jane Wyman, which has played for decades on TV.

I love this film. Seen a few times. Though anyone going in to watch it just for Murray and Aykroyd will be disappointed as they aren't the stars. Zach Galigan from Gremlins is the lead. Very well done surreal film.

Mace Dolex 09-16-2014, 02:02 AM Wired (1989)
A sort of unofficial biography on the life of John Belushi with Michael Chiklis in his feature film debut, the film was harshly panned by critics and bombed at the box office. Those close to Belushi like Dan Akroyed, Bill Murray, John Landis threatened lawsuits and attempts to boycott the films release.
I've never seen the film but from reviews the film looks more like a parody than a biography of Belushi's life.

There was a TV movie from the '70s, called Trapped, with James Brolin locked in a department store overnight with a bunch of Doberman attack dogs, that I loved as a kid, but would probably think was pretty cheesy if I ever saw it again. Has that ever been released in any format?

JamesG 03-04-2018, 09:02 PM Anyone ever heard of The Gong Show Movie? It was a 1980 box office dud that went into a fictional week into the life of its creator and host, Chuck Barris.
The film featured highlights from 4 years of the show, including the uncensored version of Jaye P. Morgan flashing for the cameras. I also believe it was the first motion picture produced by a game show production company, in this case, Chuck Barris Productions (Universal Pictures distributed it).
The film was never released on ANY home video format (including DVD), but it does turn up occasionally on cable TV.
Shout! released this on Blu-ray on 3/29/16.

Hawkee 08-15-2018, 03:25 AM Do you remember a movie called Rock And Roll Mom? It was a TV movie from 1988 that aired on The Disney Channel that starred Dyan Cannon and the late Alex Rocco that featured a young boy who had a mom who was a singer. Disney has never released Rock And Roll Mom on DVD but one of the songs that Dyan Cannon sang in Rock And Roll Mom that was named Be Mine Tonight is actually a cover of a Patti Labelle song from 1986. Rock And Roll Mom is a cool movie to watch

I Was A Teenage Werewolf (1957)
https://farm2.staticflickr.com/1913/44329009755_2e961fc978.jpg
What’s the story?
A drive-in B-movie classic, in which dysfunctional teen Michael Landon starts attending hypnotherapy sessions to cure him of his antisocial tendencies. Sadly he ends up with an unscrupulous therapist who uses regression therapy to send him on a lycanthropic rampage.
Famous enough that its title alone became an indelible part of pop culture. Teen Wolf, very obviously, owes it a debt.
What’s the problem?
Rights tangles again: original studio American International Pictures merged with Filmways who were bought by Orion who later went bankrupt. Orion had distribution deals with Warner and MGM.
Somewhere in all that, the Teenage Werewolf is howling for release. There’s a remastered DVD listed on the German Amazon (Der Tod Hat Schwarze Krallen – “Death Has Black Claws”) but it seems never actually to have come out.
The Beatles' Let it Be (1970)
https://farm2.staticflickr.com/1963/31365545118_931d1fb552_o.jpg
What’s the story?
A documentary about The Beatles, which, as it turned out, chronicled more-or-less their last days – although a lot of the footage of the band falling out with each other was cut to make to make the film less abrasive.
The final product follows the band recording at Apple Corps Headquarters and staging an impromptu gig on the studio roof.
What’s the problem?
Let it Be had a VHS release, and work was underway for a digital restoration incorporating the cut footage. But as the project progressed, the scenes of George Harrison’s temporary walk-out (the band considered replacing him with Eric Clapton) and the footage of John Lennon and Yoko Ono gave the surviving Beatles pause.
Unnamed inside sources claim that Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr have now blocked any re-release, fearing that footage of the Beatles annoying one another would damage their global brand.
Inchon (1981)
https://farm2.staticflickr.com/1935/43426606030_2d23bf51cd.jpg
What’s the story?
A film about a famous battle of the Korean War, from the director of Dr. No and Thunderball and starring Henry V, Yojimbo and Shaft.
It sounds like a nailed-on cult classic – which it is to some extent – but it’s also one of the most notorious flops in cinema history.
What’s the problem?
It died at the box office, losing $44m and establishing itself as the biggest disaster of 1982. It never got a VHS release, let alone anything subsequent. Adding to its limbo status is its unusual financial set-up.
It was bankrolled by Sun Myung Moon of the Unification Church, with MGM taking distribution rights for a much lower-than-usual cut of the profits – of which there were obviously none anyway. While the Unification Church owned the Goodlife Television Network, they occasionally played Inchon there.
Since they sold the Network, however, Inchon is back to not having an outlet of any description.
Dead Solid Perfect (1988)
https://farm2.staticflickr.com/1953/31365580808_8b22e600b5.jpg
What’s the story?
The saying goes that the best golfing movie ever made is Caddyshack, and the worst is Caddyshack II. And somewhere in the middle there’s this: an HBO golf dramedy with Randy Quaid, from around the same time as National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation.
It’s based on a bestselling novel by Dan Jenkins; Tangerine Dream did the soundtrack; and it’s apparently one of PGA champion John Daly’s favorite films.
What’s the problem?
It has quite the following among golf enthusiasts, and collectors will pay pretty high prices on eBay for a tape. But without a Kevin Costner, an Adam Sandler or a Bill Murray, it’s perhaps historically been considered by the moneymen just that bit too niche to be worth reviving.
Plus, of course, Quaid’s recent transformation into conspiracy-theorist sex-tape loon has probably kiboshed its chances of ever seeing the light of day again in the future.
Dream Demon (1988)
https://farm2.staticflickr.com/1913/44517365694_5c3c929ef8.jpg
What’s the story?
A British horror roughly contemporary with the likes of Hellraiser and Paperhouse. On VHS, this sat in the Palace Horror series alongside The Hills Have Eyes, Basket Case and The Evil Dead, but it hasn’t had the afterlife of any of those things.
Upper class English rose Jemma Redgrave and spikey American goth Kathleen Wilhoite find themselves linked by a house: Wilhoite through a pre-adoption childhood she can’t remember, and Redgrave by the nightmares the house is giving her.
Timothy Spall and Jimmy Nail are muckraking tabloid journalists who get sucked into the layers of surreal dreams that the women battle through. It's like Inception, if Inception had a zombie Spall getting punched right through the head.
What’s the problem?
Likely due to the bankruptcy of Palace Pictures. Palace only had distribution rights to a lot of their hit titles (like the aforementioned Evil Dead and Hills Have Eyes) which is why they’re still available with no problem, having been picked up again by others.
But Dream Demon was actually produced by Palace and three other companies that no longer exist either. This explains the probably baffling ownership tangle.
Meet The Applegates (1989)
https://farm2.staticflickr.com/1936/43426678180_c450466b3f.jpg
What’s the story?
Michael Lehmann directed this satirical black comedy horror in between Heathers and Hudson Hawk. It involves a family of giant praying mantises who take on human form and go and live a perfect family life in suburbia while Dad tries to wipe out the human race by engineering the end of the world at the nuclear power plant he works at.
One of a slew of late ‘80s and early ‘90s comedy horrors – Society, Parents, The ‘Burbs etc. – picking the scabs of middle class America.
What’s the problem?
Possibly to do with the bankruptcy of studio New World, although that hasn’t stopped other New World titles (Hellraiser, House, The Punisher) from reaching DVD.
The NW catalogue was with Anchor Bay for years, but the Applegates rights are now at Lionsgate. It’s probably safe to say it’s just nobody’s top priority and has fallen through the cracks, but it has been broadcast in HD on the Showtime channel.
Grim Prairie Tales (1990)
https://farm2.staticflickr.com/1959/43426578410_5b08ee7e92_o.jpg
What’s the story?
A gothic portmanteau Western in which two strangers spin scary tales around a campfire. Like most anthology films, the individual stories are hit-and-miss.
But what makes Grim Prairie Tales such a lost gem are the wraparound segments in which Brad Dourif’s uptight city clerk is forced to spend a long, dark night of the soul with James Earl Jones’ grotesque bounty hunter (and the corpse he’s got in tow).
What’s the problem?
Unclear, but it barely got a VHS release, let alone anything subsequent. You may have caught it on Alex Cox’s Moviedrome on BBC2 in the 1990s.
Wayne Coe never directed again, but still works as a professional story board artist.
Naked Tango (1991)
https://farm2.staticflickr.com/1978/44329166855_f028be384b_o.jpg
Leonard Schrader (Paul’s older brother) wrote the screenplay for Kiss of the Spider Woman, based on the novel by Manuel Puig. Six years later, he was “inspired” by Puig to write and direct this steamy melodrama.
Mathilda May plays a French trophy wife in 1920s Argentina. She runs away, but gets dragged into an obsessive relationship with gangster/pimp Cholo (Vincent D’Onofrio), centred mostly on dancing, with an occasional bit of violence for that extra frisson.
Sometimes they dance with knives. One time they dance in an abattoir. One time she’s naked – hence the name. There’s a sex scene where May is lying on fifty shades of broken glass. It’s intense.
What’s the problem?
Probably rights again. New Line picked up the distribution in the US, and Warners did the VHS. But there were at least six production companies involved in the film’s creation, most of which never made anything again.
A Fistful of Fingers (1995)
https://farm2.staticflickr.com/1973/31365762208_c51ea720f2.jpg
What’s the story?
Five years before Spaced and a decade before Shaun of the Dead, Edgar Wright made a comedy Western. In fact he made it twice, but this was the version that got released.
We gave it one star (sorry Edgar!) but the joke everybody likes and remembers is the shoot-out with pointed fingers instead of guns. That schtick would resurface in Wright’s oeuvre…
What’s the problem?
After Shaun, Wright was approached by Fistful’s distributors about a DVD, but nothing ever came of the discussions. Wright seems simultaneously embarrassed by his amateur cult classic, and up for doing some sort of release with a lot of “pretty darn silly extras” and “very daft commentaries”.
Extras cost money, so maybe that’s the sticking point. Wright wants any disc release to have explanatory context. Who’s going to pay for that?
As a side note, Wright’s even earlier Rolf Harris Saves the World was never released by anybody. And you’d have to say it still looks unlikely.

Torgo 09-07-2019, 09:31 AM Homebodies is an almost forgotten little gem.
I'm still surprised Paperhouse hasn't gotten a proper Region 1 release.
Love Night Life, again, also surprised this hasn't gotten a release.
I'm probably one of the few people that truly likes Terror In The Swamp, I'm a sucker for bigfoot-type flicks.
I keep meaning to re watch Deadly Intruder, I haven't seen it since my VHS rental days, I remember it being scary, but some stuff I found scary back then, not so much now.
I don't even remember Danny Bonaduce being in it, or just wasn't aware it was him.
The only one on that post I haven't seen is Monkey Boy (though I've been curious about it), the others I haven't seen in ages.

I contemplated buying this, but ended up not, the price. I like the movie, but for me $27.99 is ridiculous for a blu, I don't care how limited or about slipcases.

Blonde Crazy was included in Warner Archive's "Forbidden Hollywood: Vol. 8" released in Nov. 2014.

Another horror film with the same title Junior (1984) doesn't seem to have had any kind of home media release. I've been curious about it after coming across it on IMDB years ago, mainly because it stars Frank DeCaro (who was on the early days of The Daily Show before it turned political.)
The only reviews of it on IMDB, are two people confusing it with the above 1985 film, and one by the writer/director of the 1984 one pointing that out, she also gave a little info on her movie, it played some alternative festivals in the 80s.

JamesG 12-15-2020, 02:44 AM The Story of Temple Drake (1933)
Pre-code melodrama from a novel by William Faulkner is notorious for its rape scene.
Restored by MoMA and has shown on TV, but never legally available on any video format.
7th Heaven (1937)
Remake of a famous silent romance is entertaining despite the miscasting of James Stewart as a Parisian sewer cleaner.

Definitely. Thank you to these boutique labels.
And it's nice that some of these films are even being released in their original uncut form, like with My Blood Valentine and original gore intact. Or films like the 70s anthology Screams Of A Winter Night which now is back to its almost 2 hour running time, with one of its segments finally seeing the light of day.
Or the 1983 horror-western Eyes Of Fire, with original opening and ending scenes (amongst other footage) restored.

I've got the Blu, totally forgot to update this thread. The Blu fixes one of the problems so many of the VHS transfers had, you can actually see what's going on in the dark/night scenes, especially the ending where you could hardly tell what was happening.

JamesG 11-30-2022, 06:06 AM Wheeler (1975) aka Psycho From Texas
A drifter/hitman is hired by a local business man to kidnap the local oil baron. The hitman had been reared in squalor, suffering the abuses of his whoring mama. When the baron escapes his assistant must chase him while the hitman takes care of a few loose ends.

Deadline (1984)
A horror film about a screenwriter who loses the ability to distinguish between his fantasy world and the real world, with disastrous consequences. As he ruminates on his place in any world and loses his grip, he also loses his wife and his children's respect, and critics tear him apart. The final undoing of this screenwriter is a deadline that must be met at all costs, costs that perhaps are too great.

I feel bad I haven't updated any of these on here. I've got the Blu for A Day Of Judgment. It's from EO Studios who put out a bunch of the 3D movies in the 80s including Dogs Of Hell and Tales Of The Third Dimension.
Torgo 11-30-2022, 10:49 AM Arrow released a limited 3,000 units of The Prey on Blu and they tend to be pretty expensive online now.
Managed to get The Prey when it first came out, has 3 cuts of the movie- the longer cut which features a flashback scene is populated with adult film actors.
I had missed out on the first Blu release of Screams Of The Winter Night which went OOP so the price skyrocketed, managed to snag it on its re release. Like I mentioned with Deadly Games above, they fixed the problem with the VHS transfer, and you can see what is happening in the night scenes.
I had heard that they were including the cut story, as Screams which is an anthology was shortened for theatrical release, but it wasn't just that 4th story restored, but almost 20 some more minutes of the wraparound. It has both cuts, the theatrical which is about 90 mins, and the original cut which is almost 120 mins.

Humphrey Bogart plays a crusading managing editor whose newspaper may go out of business in the only one of his 1950s movies that’s not on DVD.

Other missing Bogies include The Big Shot (1942), his last gangster film released just ahead of Casablanca.
