NeilWilson 04-21-2013, 05:04 AM 9x01- To New Beginnings An argument with Michelle causes D.J. to realize she's ready to move in with Steve. Meanwhile, Jesse leaves his job at the radio station after they add a third person to work with them who Joey works really well with. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- D.J. entered the house through the kitchen door where Danny was sitting at the kitchen table. D.J. had her car keys in one hand and her book bag in the other. "Hey honey, how was your classes?" Danny asked. D.J. decided to stay close to home and attend San Francisco State University and major in journalism, something she's been passionate about since junior high. She had contemplated leaving home and moving away to be on her own, but once Steve returned to take D.J. to her prom, she grabbed the opportunity to be with him again and stayed home. "Finding a parking spot was dreadful but classes were fine. You won't believe it though, my first day and I already have loads of homework," D.J. answered. "Oh I believe it. There were many nights I had to pull an all-nighter to get the work done," Danny replied, thinking back his college days. "Well it's not that bad but I promised Stephanie and Michelle I'd take them out for some pizza for some sister time today. I had no idea I'd have this much homework to do on my first day and I won't have time to take them out today," D.J. said, feeling a little guilty about having to break her promise. "I'm sure they'll understand," Danny replied. "I hope so. Well if you need me I'll be in my room writing until my hand cramps up," D.J. said. "That's what I like to hear," Danny smiled as he takes a sip of his coffee. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Meanwhile, Joey and Jesse are at their job at the radio station. Jesse had just put on a new song and the commercials and the two are waiting until they go back on the air. Joey is munching on a cheeseburger and Jesse's glaring at him disgusted. Joey looks over and notices him looking. "What do I have something in my teeth?" Joey asked. "I'm too busy noticing the ketchup stain on your shirt to look at your teeth. Here's a napkin. Use it," Jesse replied. Joey looks down at his shirt and notices the ketchup that fell onto his shirt and wipes it off. As he wipes his shirt their boss Courtney comes in. "Hi boys. I have some news I think you guys need to hear," Courtney said. "What's up Courtney?" Jesse spun around in his spinning chair to face her direction. "We're bringing in a third radio host to join you guys starting next week. Her name is Melissa Sanders," Courtney announced. "Whoa, whoa, whoa. Joey and I are a team, our chemistry is perfect as it is. We don't need a third person," Jesse replied. "You and Joey have wonderful chemistry I agree, but we need more female hosts. All of our hosts are male and we need a female to shake things up. I'm sure you guys will love her once you guys get acquainted. We literally just hired her, I'll bring her in so you guys can talk and get to know each other," Courtney said then left the room. "How can they do this without asking us? We've been at the station for almost three years now. This is totally unfair. What do you think Joseph?" Jesse asked. Before Joey could get a word out Melissa walked in. She was blonde with long curls that went halfway down her back, green eyes and had red lipstick on. Joey was instantly attracted the second he seen her. She wore a blue jean vest with a black long sleeved shirt underneath and a pair of tight blue jeans. "Have mercy," Joey said, rehashing one of Jesse's catchphrases. "You must be Melissa," Jesse stood up and shook her hand. "Hi, I'm Jesse and this is my friend and co-host Joey." "Hi Joey, nice to meet you," Melissa smiled and shook Joey's hand. "The pleasure is all mine," Joey smiled. "So how long have you been a radio host?" "About two years. I worked at a local station in Philadelphia but moved here to San Francisco last week," Melissa replied. "Oh really. What brings you to San Francisco?" Joey asked. "My best friend lives out here. I was rather lonely in Philadelphia so I wanted to move closer to her," Melissa explained. "I'm sure you'll love it here," Joey replied. "So far I do. I'd like to get to know more people though. I see you like burgers, after you get off work would you like to go out and grab something else to eat?" Melissa asked. "I love to eat! Count me in," Joey accepted. "You're welcome to come too Jesse if you want," Melissa smiled at him not wanting to exclude him. "Thanks for the invitation but I have to get home to my wife and kids," Jesse politely declined. "Aw you have kids? I wish I had some by now. I still haven't found a husband yet and I'm almost 35. What about you Joey? Any wife or kids?" Melissa asked, eager to find out if he's single. "Nope, I'm totally single," Joey answered. "Looks like we have something in common already," Melissa smiled. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Back at home D.J. is in her room writing a paper for her writing class. Stephanie and Michelle walk in her room, bored from still being on summer vacation. They hadn't forgotten about the promise D.J. made. "We're ready for the ooey gooey double cheese pizza from Spinelli's you promised us," Stephanie said. "Their pizza is so good I could eat a whole one!" Michelle included. "I'm so sorry guys but I'm going to have to postpone again. I've got a lot of homework and I won't have any free time to take you guys today. I promise if nothing comes up I'll take you guys on Saturday," D.J. explained. "It's fine. Come on Michelle. I'll call Gia and we can go down to the food court," Stephanie understood. "No it's not fine! You made a promise and you keep breaking your promises over and over. You'll just ditch us to hang out with Steve because he's all you care about ever since you two got back together," Michelle said to D.J. "He is not. Being an adult comes with a lot of responsibilities. I don't get to always go to the mall and hang out whenever I went to. Oh what I am explaining this to you for, you're eight. You don't understand these things," D.J. replied. "Hey! I may be eight but I'm a lot smarter than you think. Why don't you just go live with Steve? Then you can see him all the time!" Michelle argued. "Live with Steve? Where'd you get that from? Have you little snoops been into my diary again?" D.J.'s voice grew angrier. "Hey my diary snooping days are over. It's all Michelle," Stephanie put her hand on her hip and glared at Michelle. "Oops," Michelle covered her mouth with her hand. "Fine I read it. I read all about how Steve asked you to move in and you haven't made up your mind," Michelle confessed. D.J. could feel her blood boil. She had been through this time and time again with her little sisters and they never get the point that she needs privacy in her life! It was days like these the major age difference between them really showed. "Steve asked you to move in? Whoa that's big! Have you told dad yet?" Stephanie asked. "No I haven't because I wasn't going to accept Steve's offer, but now I'm seriously going to reconsider. I can't believe it. I'm an adult now and you guys don't have enough respect to give me my privacy! I'm going to Steve's to do my homework. Enjoy yourselves at the mall," D.J. grabbed her backpack and stormed off. "Good going Michelle. Now D.J. is mad at us," Stephanie said. "Lets go to the food court," Michelle replied disregarding the fact D.J. was mad. Stephanie rolled her eyes at Michelle as they both walked out of the room. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- D.J. arrived and knocked on Steve's front door. Steve still had bed hair and was in his pajamas watching television at 3 o'clock in the afternoon. He walked over and open to the door, happy to see D.J. "Hey babe," Steve said as he kissed D.J. on the lips. "Hey. Do you mind if I work on my homework here? I had a fight with my sisters and I want to be somewhere quiet while I'm working on my first assignments of the semester. I want to keep my GPA high," D.J. asked. "Sure, no problem. Go ahead and push that stuff off the table," Steve said pointing to a cluttered table in his kitchen. "So what did you and the girls fight about?" "We had plans today but I had to cancel and Michelle turned it into an argument about me and you spending time together. Then I found out she snooped in my diary where I wrote something about you asking me to move in last week. For years the two of them have been snooping through my personal life and I'm at my breaking point," D.J. explained. "Speaking of moving in, you never gave me an answer to that question," Steve said. "Well I have to admit it's getting more tempting by the day," D.J. admitted. "What's stopping you? Think about it. No little ones to invade your private life, no adults around to tell you how to live your life. It's heaven. Oh and lets not forget a whole refrigerator full of food and nobody to have to share it with," Steve walked over and opened the refrigerator and grabbed an apple. "I've thought about it for a while. Maybe it's time I move out. Part of being a college student is moving away and starting life on your own and I deprived myself of that experience when I chose to live at home," D.J. replied. "So is that a yes? You're moving in?" Steve said while chewing on his apple. "It's a yes. I'm moving in. You're stuck with me now," D.J. walked over and wiped the apple juice from his chin and kissed him on the lips. "Good," Steve replied and return the kiss. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Meanwhile at the radio station Joey and Melissa edged Jesse out and Melissa had taken over his spot on air. Jesse sat in a chair in the corner with his arms crossed looking annoyed about being edged out. "So if I hadn't told you how old I was, how old would you think I am by looking at me?" Melissa asked. "No older than twenty-five," Joey answered. "You're lying," Melissa blushed. "No I'm not. What about me, how old would you think I look?" Joey asked. "Thirty-two," Melissa answered. "You could of lied a little," Joey replied. "Why? I find men my age a lot more attractive then little boys," Melissa smiled. "Hope you find men your age who still wear Ninja Turtle pajamas attractive," Jesse teased. "Hey, they are really comfortable pajamas," Joey replied trying to avoid looking stupid. "Nothing wrong with being comfortable," Melissa replied. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- A few hours later Jesse had already gotten home from work. Becky stirred a pot of beef stew while Jesse looked put his head on her shoulder and watched. "Mommy's cooking?" Nicky asked. "Pizza! Pizza! Pizza!" Nicky and Alex exclaimed in unison. "We're not having pizza. Your mom made dinner and it's a very good dinner. You're going to eat it then if you want you can have some ice cream," Jesse explained. "Mommy's a bad cook," Nicky replied. "Pizza! Pizza! Pizza!" Nicky and Alex chanted. "You're mom is not a bad cook. She's just not the best cook," Jesse replied. "Gee thanks Jess," Becky snarled at him. "Well dinner's ready. Round up the gang." "Guys! Dinner is ready!" Jesse yelled loud enough so everyone can hear him. Danny came in from the living room while Stephanie and Michelle came in from the kitchen stairwell. D.J. walked in through the backdoor at the perfect time. "Deej! Right on time we're just now eating dinner," Becky said while pouring some stew into a bowl. "Great. I'll go put my stuff away then I'll be right down," D.J. replied. "Where's Joey?" Danny asked Jesse. "Out with our new coworker. The radio station brought in a female to work with us and last time I checked on them those two were almost ready to get married. Which reminds me I have some news to share once D.J. gets down here," Jesse answered. "I'm here!" D.J. came back downstairs and sat at the table. "Now that we're all here, I've decided that I'm going to quit my job at the radio station," Jesse announced. Everyone's faces grew with a little bit of shock except for Nicky and Alex who continued eating. "Jess, are you sure this is what you want," Becky asked him. "I'm doing so much these days. Besides the radio station job I've got the Smash Club, the band, and have a family. I want to have more time available to appreciate the things I have now. To watch my sons grow up, to have more time to dedicate to my music, maybe even have another baby someday. With the radio station gig I just felt like my time was up y'know? Besides when I saw Joey and Melissa working together it was like watching what me and Joey had when we first got into the gig. I think they'll be a great team," Jesse answered. "But you and Joey have been working together forever," Stephanie said. "Does Joey know you are quitting?" Danny asked. "Not yet. I'll talk to him about it when he get home," Jesse answered. "Well not to overshadow Uncle Jesse's news or anything but I have some news of my own. You all may want to sit down for this one," D.J. said. "I'm sitting," Danny said in his worried voice, knowing whatever was about to come he wasn't going to like. "Steve and I have been talking for a while and I decided I'm going to move into his apartment," D.J. announced. "Whoa," Becky and Jesse said in unison. "I think my ears must be clogged. What was that?" Danny said visibly not thrilled with the news pretended not to hear. "Dad. You heard what I said," D.J. replied. "Lets go talk in the living room," Danny said. "Guys watch the boys," Becky said to the girls as her and Jesse followed Danny into the living room to help talk to D.J. D.J. sat on the couch as Danny sat beside her. Jesse and Becky remained standing up. "Honey why would you want to move in with Steve right now?" Danny asked. "I'm an adult now dad. I want to be able to experience college life away from home. I want my privacy and I think it'd do me good to be independent for a while," D.J. replied. "Your sisters didn't look too shocked. I suppose they're behind this?" Danny noticed. "I wrote about it in my diary and Michelle read it and we got in a little argument about it. She thought I didn't want to spend time with her to be with Steve," D.J. explained. "D.J. before you make a big step like this you should take a minute and think about it's going to affect your relationship with Steve in the long run," Jesse said. "My relationship with Steve couldn't be any better," D.J. replied. "Remember when Kimmy stayed here for two weeks and then qualities about Kimmy started to stand out that you didn't realize bothered you so much? It's the same thing with boyfriends too. One day you find their obsession with their hair cute and then the next everywhere you turn there's nothing but hair products laying around your bathroom. It stops being cute," Becky tried to get D.J. to understand while reminiscing on her history with Jesse. "I understand what your trying to say but I've known Steve since I was fifteen. After everything we've been through we managed to come back to each other and I feel really good about this decision. I'm willing to take the risk," D.J. said. "Well you're legally an adult now so I can't stop you, but I don't want you to make the same mistakes I did. You're mom and I had you young and got married young. I almost didn't finish college because it was really hard to manage everything. I don't want you to have to struggle like we did. I want you to finish school and land a good job, then if you feel ready start a family do it," Danny reminisced. "I know dad. I don't plan on starting a family anytime soon. I'll have my own room and I'll pay my own bills from what I earn at the Smash Club. It'll be a good thing," D.J. tried to convince her father. "I know Steve's a good guy and if you think you're ready for this then I support your decision but if anything happens I'm only a phone call away. You can come back home anytime you want," Danny approved. "We're going to miss you kiddo," Jesse said. "I'm going to miss you guys so much," D.J. smiled. "Come give your Uncle J a hug," Jesse smiled back and Becky joined in on the hug. Danny stood up and hugged D.J. as well. "I've been dreading this day. I'm going to miss you more than you can imagine." "I know. I'll be fine though dad," D.J. said. "I know you will," Danny said still holding on to D.J. "Dad you can let go now. We should go finish our dinner before it gets cold," D.J. squirmed trying to release from her dads hug. "Oh right," Danny finally let go. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The next day D.J. was in her room starting to pack her things. Michelle came in in disbelief that her sister was actually leaving. "I'm sorry if me reading your diary caused you to leave," Michelle apologized. "Oh Michelle come here," D.J. sat on her bed as Michelle sat beside her. "Nothing you did caused me to want to move. I'm just getting older and need to start doing more adult things like getting a job, paying bills, living on my own. I'm sorry I said what about you being too young to understand. I guess because it's been so long since I was eight I have a hard time remembering what it was like," D.J. apologized. "It's okay," Michelle accepted her apology. "Do you remember our cousin Steve from the Tanner family reunion?" D.J. asked. "A little," Michelle replied. "Well when I was around your age me and him were so close. Then one day he came to visit after Uncle Jesse and Joey moved in and suddenly the age difference between us stood out and I was just the little kid and he seemed to much older than me," D.J. told her youngest sister. "That's how I feel sometimes," Michelle admitted. "I know the age gap between us can be hard sometimes but that doesn't mean I don't love you. I remember when mom brought you home from the hospital it was one of the happiest days of my life because I had a new baby sister. I had a big role in raising you. You're my sister and I love you so much and will always be here for you," D.J. said. "But you won't be here. I won't get to see you much anymore," Michelle replied. "You'll get to see me all the time. Steve only lives two blocks away. Besides now that I have my own place you and Stephanie can come over and we can have sleepovers at my place just the Tanner sisters," D.J. explained. "Wow that sounds like fun! You moving out don't seem so bad anymore," Michelle said. "Plus you'll have your own bedroom once I'm gone. Stephanie will into my old room and you'll have a ton of space," D.J. said. "This just keeps getting better and better," Michelle smiled. "I thought you'd like that," D.J. smiled back. "I'll help you pack if you want," Michelle volunteered. "Sure. Go ahead and start packing all the stuffed animals and shoes in the bottom of my closed into those boxes over there," D.J. pointed out. "Can I help?" Stephanie walked in and volunteered. "Yeah go ahead and start packing anything," D.J. accepted. "Hey Tanners!" Kimmy greeted. "Today's a big day for you Deej! You'll have your own apartment and no longer have to deal with these two." "Hey, now that I think about it it's a big day for us too! Kimmy won't be coming over anymore!" Stephanie realized. "Make all the jokes you want but you'll miss me," Kimmy replied. "Nah," Stephanie and Michelle looked at each other and said in unison. Kimmy rolled her eyes. "Oh good you haven't packed your clothes yet. I got you a present!" Kimmy handed D.J. a white box. D.J. opened it and pulled out leopard print lingerie. "Kimmy!" D.J. exclaimed looking bothered by the gift. "Just a little something for you and Steve-o-rino remember me by," Kimmy winked at her. "Gross!" Stephanie shouted with a sour expression on her face. D.J. handed the box back to her. "I won't be needing this for a few more years." "Okie dokie but I must say Duane loves it. I'll make sure this goes to good use," Kimmy smiled. "Deej, either she goes or I do!" Stephanie exclaimed grossed out by the images Kimmy provided. "Just keep packing," D.J. replied. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Jesse finally saw Joey in the living room for the first time since they parted ways at the radio station. "Someone got in late," Jesse said to Joey who couldn't keep a smile off his face. "I had the best of my life last night Jess! Melissa and I went to grab a piece of pizza and Spinelli's and we just had so much to talk about. We had so much fun eating pizza that we went and caught a movie too! Then we went to her place and sat around. It was amazing," Joey described. "That's great Joey," Jesse replied happy for his friend but not sure how he'd take the news of him quitting. "We need to talk about something though." "Is something wrong?" Joey asked noticing the seriousness on his face. Jesse took a seat on the couch beside him. "I quit my job at the radio station." "What? Why? It's not Melissa is it?" Joey asked. "No it's not Melissa. I've been thinking about this for a while. I just have so much I'm doing these days and I've been thinking about my life. I feel like I need to put more focus into the Smash Club and my music. Plus Nicky and Alex are growing up so quickly. When I saw you and Melissa together on the air it hit me that I don't really need my job at the radio station. You and Melissa are a great duo together on air. I'm sorry I didn't tell you before I quit," Jesse explained. "It's fine Jess. I understand where you're coming from. I've been missing comedy lately too and found myself questioning whether I'm happy, but I am. You're right, Melissa and I are a good team. If leaving the station to focus on what's more important is what you want then I support it 100%," Joey replied. "Thanks for understanding buddy," Jesse smiled. "So are days of working together are really over huh?" Joey asked. "Not necessarily. The whole family has been helping out with the Smash Club ever since I got it and you're part of the family," Jesse replied. "You're right," Joey replied. Nicky and Alex ran into the living room and joined Jesse and Joey. "Daddy! D.J. need help bringing stuff downstairs!" Alex said. "You too Joey!" Nicky followed as they pulled on the adults arms to get them up. "We're coming, we're coming," Jesse and Joey said in unison. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- About an hour later Steve arrived to help the guys put the final boxes in Steve's truck. "Got the final box!" Steve grabbed it and walked outside to load it on the truck. "I think that's everything. Thanks for helping me pack guys," D.J said to everybody. "Wow this is so surreal. It doesn't seem like that long ago Jesse and I moved in here to help you girls out and we're already helping one move out. You girls are really growing up," Joey said. "Oh suck it up you ol' softy. Come on Deej, we have to go decide your carpet pattern," Kimmy interrupted. "Well I'm ready to go," D.J. said and walked over to give her father a hug. "I'll never be," Danny said and kissed her on the cheek. "Call as soon as you get there." "Dad, I'm only two blocks away," D.J. replied. "Still call," Danny said. "Fine," D.J. compromised. She walked around the room and gave everybody a hug. "Bye everybody." "Bye," everybody said in unison. Danny had a look of sadness on his face and Joey put his hand on his shoulder to comfort him. Everybody then went to their own different places and Danny walked over and grabbed the family album and opened up to a picture when D.J. was ten. "You'll always be my little girl," Danny smiled.
