Although I think this was a great episode.....I find it interesting that Hazel didn't know the restaurant "the Grotto" was closed and abandoned for years, and that the owner of the restaurant/bar "Soxie" sold out 12 years ago and didn't serve food anymore, it essentially became a hang out for young kids. Hazel was a loveable busybody and budinsky, who knew everyone and everything going around about town....Why didn't she know about these two places when she was on her date with Gus?

Wow, what a great episode "So Long Brown Eyes" is. It's like a lot of the first season episodes that exude real charm and a sense of family love. Especially the very last scene with Hazel and Harold where he is waiting for her in her bedroom chair. Such a tender moment between the two of them. Also, the scenes between Hazel and Missy were so warm. It really looks like they loved each other.
I noticed in the closing credits that Peggy Chantler (aka Peggy Chantler Dick) wrote this episode. I like all the episodes that she writes.

"So Long Brown Eyes" is one of my all-time favorite episodes of the series. It gave an extra dimension of depth to the Hazel character. The really good writing in the series allowed viewers to see what a terrific actress Shirley Booth was. I have seen all of Shirley Booth's starring feature films: Come Back Little Sheba, About Mrs. Leslie, Hotspell and The Matchmaker. She shines in all of them. That an average looking woman can move me to tears with her acting genius is amazing. I also have seen A Touch of Grace, and am hopeful that someday the powers that be will release that series. It is only, I think, about 13 episodes. It was a good series, too.

So Long Brown Eyes is definitely a highlight, one of my personal favorite Hazel's is "Hazel's Pajama Party" it was a funny and also a sad program. Pathos is a quality only the best of comedic actors/actress' can pull off. Jackie Gleason could do it and so could Shirley Booth. So many good episodes of Hazel, I didn't want to call this my favorite, but it's in the top 10. I also really liked "Winter Wonderland" Hazel was humiliated then snapped out of it and like the good Hazel I like she fights back. Also the color episode (I don't remember the title) where Hazel is made to feel bad by a magazine writer who's being forced to write an article on Hazel. Hazel doesn't quite fight back in this one but she wins out by just being a good and better person than the writer.
