The Temptations went from basic R&B in the late 60s to psychedelia - concurrent with the change in lead singers (David Ruffin to Dennis Edwards) and writers/producers (Smokey Robinson to Norman Whitfield).

Pantera went from standard 80's glam/pop-metal to a heavier, edgier sound called power groove in the early 90's which incorporated thrash, hardcore, and a splash of Southern rock. They changed completely from anything they were before.
They invented the 90's on 'Cowboys From Hell'. Before Seattle.
