Thanks Jack. I seem to recall an episode where this large dog was at Beaver's school. I only saw it once, but the dog looked remarkably like Spike(Old Yeller).If anyone remembers please let me know!

It's possible. I do know that Spike won a PATSY Award for "Old Yeller" and another one for his role in the 1959 movie "Dog of Flanders." He was trained by Rudd Weatherwax, Lassie's trainer.

That may be true, but I never noticed the dog in that episode looked like the one in Old Yeller. That seems funny, since I've been a fan of LITB about all my life of 50+ years, and I did recognize that same dog in a movie that was set on a Pacific Island, where his name was Rontu (not sure if that was the name of the movie, though).

Yes, Island of the Blue Dolphin is on youtube, and it has to be the one. But the dog credited as "Rontu" is not Spike. I still think it looks so much like that dog in Old Yeller, though. Of course, there's almost always more than one dog used, according to "specialties," like jumping, retrieving, and such. The dog that gets the credit, I suppose, is the one considered best looking for closeups.
