View Full Version : I Think I Just Got A History Lesson By Watching 'The Mary Tyler Moore Show?!?' LOL
Brian Damage 03-31-2012, 11:55 PM Lou wants to do something new and different for the newscasts, so he wants to hire a woman anchor. Were there no women in the anchors seats back in the early 70's??? Granted, he didn't want a partner for Ted Baxter, but a woman to do just "editorials."
Mr. Television 04-01-2012, 12:24 AM I remember when Barbara Walters was hired to co-anchor the ABC Evening News with Harry Reasoner. It was big news in itself. lol I also heard they didn't get along very well. It's probably why it didn't last.

That was in 1976.

I remember that, as well. It was a big deal at the time. And about 15 years later, CBS paired up Dan Rather with Connie Chung. That didn't work out too well, either. Of course Dan Rather had already been anchoring the evening news for years, then suddenly they stuck her next to him, which was unfair for both. I don't think it was until Katie Couric that a woman alone anchored the evening news for one of the major networks without a man by her side. Of course, there have been females anchoring news shows on cable, and locally, for many years.

okay, because this particular episode was 1974.

Before 1970?

I don't know how many local anchorwomen there were in the early 70's. I don't remember any but I didn't pay much attention to the local news until the late 70's.
Mr. Television 04-01-2012, 12:57 AM If Wikipedia's right, NBC claims that Kelly Lange was the first local woman anchor at an NBC owned station.. That was in 1971.

Wow that is interesting, I guess it makes sense now that Lou wanted to shake things up, by bringing in a female anchor.

I don't know about before 1970, what I meant was there have been women anchoring local and cable news shows (without a man by their side) for many years prior to Katie Couric taking over the CBS Evening News in 2006.
