View Full Version : Mary Tyler Moore Admits To Being A Little Jealous Of Her Former Co-Stars Longevity
Brian Damage 03-31-2012, 09:28 PM Betty White and Ed Asner worked together again on last week's episode of TV Land's "Hot in Cleveland," right after Asner's appearance on CBS' reboot of "Hawaii Five-0," and Georgia Engel (who played Ted Baxter's wife Georgette) turned up last week on CBS' "Two and a Half Men." Moore says it's great for her to see her old TV gang still so active: "You bet it is ... you bet it is. And it's not without a little bit of jealousy."

Mr. Television 03-31-2012, 09:45 PM I don't get why Mary isn't as active as her co-stars have been. You can add Cloris Leachman too.

I assume her health is a major reason why. Somebody here once posted that she was going blind. I hope that isn't true.

I believe that that is a huge reason. I know that she has recently broken her hip, and then not too long ago she had the surgery done on her head.
The most recent time I have seen her on tv is when she accepted the Life Acheivement Award, and even though it was cute seeing her and Dick Van Dyke together again, she looked pretty weak.

It is really depressing seeing her health deteriorate like it has. Especially seeing her in TMTMS. She was so spry and bubbly and beautiful. LOL I think I've got a Retro-Crush on Mary. LOL

I remember her saying many years ago that she expected her diabetes to eventually lead to vision loss, and sadly that seems to be happening. If you saw her cameo on Hot in Cleveland a year or so ago, you may have noticed that her part was scripted so as not to require her to do anything that would require sight. It was a scene in a jail cell, and her "entrance" consisted of her simply rolling over on a bench and revealing her face (she had been facing the wall). At the end of the scene, she was escorted away by two actors portraying prison guards. They were holding her by each arm and literally led her off the set. It was a clever set-up that made it all look like it was part of the scene, but clearly it was just a way to conceal the fact that she couldn't see very well and needed assistance. There's no way she could pull that off on a regular basis unless she were playing a blind or poorly sighted person.
biffbronson 04-01-2012, 08:35 PM Having finished reading a book she wrote, I don't think Mary fully realizes the impact she's made, and how she's (in my opinion) at the absolute superstardom of TV -- which I think you could argue only for Betty White as even coming close as far as her former co-stars.
In the book, Mary talked quite a bit about how her diabetes affected her vision. It's really sad that she's had such trouble, and it's worried her that people will perceive her as snobbish if she seem to ignore them -- when in fact she may not have been able to see that person~~~!!
She's battled this type of thing for many years now, and as LittleRickyII described, there's been assistance when she's done things on film and in public situations.

Oh okay, that makes more sense to me. lol
ajgenard 04-02-2012, 02:13 AM LOL Mary is obviously the sweet little do-gooder you take home to meet mom. And Rhoda is obviously the fun-lovin' broad you take out for a good time. :happyface
But seriously, I guess you could say I have a "retro crush" on MTM, Valerie Harper, Lucille Ball, and several of the female greats from the past - even Betty White was still quite a looker at certain times on TMTMS then in her 50s. However the word crush automatically puts me in mind of 6th grade where just by thinking of a beautiful girl made my palms sweat and heart rate increase. As a grown-ass man I truly respect these women for their incredible talents and accomplishments. Many of them just happened to be extremely attractive once upon a time in varying degrees. It's a beautiful thing that photography affords us the ability to clearly see the most natural thing in the world: the aging process. While it can be sad to see them fall apart and lose their youthful beauty, it's really the circle of life.
So in my eyes, most of us adults have something much deeper than a simple "crush" :D

I bet her book is interesting. I completely understand the part about her not seeing people. For example they may wave at her and if she can't see it she can't wave in return. If she asks someone a question and they nod as an answer she might not see them nod. I know what that's like.
PGood97041 04-06-2012, 07:46 PM I'm sure it's her health situation that caused Mary to say that.
My thoughts, and those of her many fans, will always be with her on this.
One thing I am sure of, though, is that she is a fighter, as is shown in some of the appearances she recently has made.
I'm sure Mary recognizes her legendary status, and I'm positive the "jealousy" is not about her former co-stars eclipsing her (that'll never happen, no matter how great they are). She just wishes she had been able to keep performing the way she knows she can, and the way her ex-co-stars have been able to do.
