Gomer F. Cool, 103, passed away peacefully Sunday, March 4, 2012. He was born in April 1908 in Nevada, Mo., and spent his early life in that state. He studied violin at the Kansas City Conservatory of Music and in private study, after which he was employed at a Kansas City radio station as a musician and writer. In 1935, he married Margaret Barnum. They moved to Hollywood in 1939 with a musical group called The Texas Rangers. While there, he performed in numerous western films with such stars as Gene Autry and Johnny Mack Brown. He also did free lance writing projects and was writer-director for the "You Asked For It" TV show and the Gene Autry radio show. His work in Hollywood included helping establish the Radio Writers Guild and serving on the National Council of the Writers Guild of America. After moving to Santa Barbara in 1960, he served as president of the North Santa Barbara Kiwanis Club and twice as distinguished Lt. Governor. He sat on the 1981 County Grand Jury and later served as president of the Past Grand Jury Association. His great sense of humor, gracious manners and positive outlook on life were an inspiration to all who knew him. He is greatly missed by his family and by his many friends at The Villages in San Luis Obispo. Gomer is survived by two sons Douglas of Carpinteria, Calif., and Stephen (Karla) of Arroyo Grande; grandchildren Jeffrey Cool, Lara Golden (Ed) and Monte Cool; and great-grandchildren Lauren Cool and Julia Golden. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Margaret, in 1998. A celebration of life is scheduled for 1 p.m. Monday, March 26, 2012, at The Villages of San Luis Obispo. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Direct Relief Foundation.
