The daytime soap opera genre has received another blow. According to sources, Soap Opera Weekly magazine has folded. Founded in November 1989 by News Corp., with Mimi Torchin as the editor-in-chief, the weekly, tabloid-size publication became a sister publication to industry bible Soap Opera Digest, when that publication was also purchased by News Corp. in 1989.

In 1991, both magazines were sold to K-III, which later became known as Primedia. Primedia sold SOW and SOD to Source Interlink in 2007. In 2011, SOW and SOD's licensing rights were purchased by American Media.

"Either issue 15 or 16 of this year will be the magazine's last one," says an insider.

Not a surprise at all. With only four soaps left on the air, two magazines on the genre aren't warranted. I believe Soap Opera Digest will announce a similar decision this year...

'Soap Opera Weekly' will probably be replaced by 'Boring Reality and Talk Shows Weekly'.

I heard about that. So sad but so not shocking. With only 4 remaining soaps and the print media in general fading, it was just a matter of time. :( I just hate to see even more people out of work. :(

That really stinks!!! Btw, there is already a magazine out called Reality TV Weekly or something like that. So reallly, 'Boring Reality and Talk Shows Weekly' really isnt to far off after all. Very sad all the way around.

I loved this magazine and it was only a matter of time. I still look through the soap mags on occasion and they seem to be getting thinner and thinner. Sad....

I used to get Soap Opera Digest when I used to watch "All My Children" and "Falcon Crest".

I saw that this week and it is placed in the slots that still say "Soap Opera Weekly"--I wonder if it's the same magazine publishing company. Suffice it to say, that's one I'll never be buying.

There already is a Reality Weekly magazine out now. Of course, where I would buy all the soap magazines I could get my hands on, I have no interest in a "reality tv" magazine.
What a loss. I still miss One Life to Live a whole lot. :(

When my mother and I would watch soap operas me and Mom would always look forward to the issues of Soap Opera Weekly and that magazine along with Soap Opera Magazine and Soap Opera Digest were the magazines we would read to learn about what would happen on every episode of The Young And The Restless every day of the week. I would buy the issues of Soap Opera Weekly and keep them on the bookshelf in my room and if my mom wanted to read about The Young And The Restless she would go into my room and read the soap opera magazines with me. It's a surprise that Soap Opera Weekly is no longer being published and I think in the near future there will be another soap opera magazine that will showcase the many soap operas that will be made in the years ahead

I haven't watched a soap with any regularity for a few years but I still pick up a soap mag every once in a while at the grocery store and glance at it. Old habits die hard I guess.
