View Full Version : K*Mart: Bankrupt
Sean Snow 01-22-2002, 06:59 PM K*Mart has filed for bankruptcy! Though I really don't care...it's to bad that people will lose their jobs, but K*Mart is just way too messy....mine has stuff from 1998 littered all over the floor, and it smells like a dirty diaper lol. Plus, they got rid of those Rosie O'Donald/Penny Marshall Commercials lol.
According to the News, Target & Wal*Mart have beat K*Mart to a pulp lol
XoVanillaRain90oX 01-22-2002, 07:03 PM That sucks but I never liked K*mart..
WAL*MART ROCKS!!!!!!
Bootsy Whoosh 01-22-2002, 07:04 PM Agreed, it is bad the people will be loosing their jobs, especially now since the economy isn't too great. Of course, they may not loose their jobs immediately. I remember awhile back Phar-Mor filed for bankruptcy, but the Phar-Mor's by me didn't actually close until several years later.
But yes, K-Mart is not that great of a store. They kind of creep me out actually. All the ones I go to smell bad (though not like a dirty diaper....they always have like this sickeningly sweet/musty smell, like as if they are trying to mask some more horrible smell, lol) Anyway, and they're always kind of dirty and messy, making it difficult to negotiate the store and find things.
Wal-Mart ain't much better, but I can tolerate them more, plus they're so damn cheap I just can't resist. But Target is the bomb.
JDS84 01-22-2002, 07:05 PM I don't like K-Mart's either. The one where I live is messy and it sucks. The traffic to get to K-mart's sucks too.
Ags2000 01-22-2002, 07:13 PM I heard that today.
D
Hollow 01-22-2002, 07:23 PM Kmart's ok but Wal*Mart's better :D
Truth 01-22-2002, 07:26 PM WAL*MART! WAL*MART! WAL*MART! WAL*MART! WAL*MART!
Chocoholic 01-22-2002, 07:32 PM I feel bad for all the people who are going to lose their jobs, but I'm also on the list of K-Mart haters. K-Mart is the only major department store in my town and it is AWFUL!!!!!!!!!!! The store is messy and disorganized. The salepeople are rude, incompetent, and unhelpful. I avoid shopping there as much as possible, even if it means a 25 minute drive to the mall as opposed to a 5 minute drive to K-Mart.
GoldenFamilyTies 01-22-2002, 07:39 PM The K-Mart by me is a very good one, and I'm really good friends with the pharmacist there. :) But this K-Mart gets good business so hopefully it won't go down. :(
Beruche 01-22-2002, 08:49 PM To bad for the people who are going to lose their jobs but I HATE K-mart actually I hate Wal-Mart more.
Meg07945 01-22-2002, 08:52 PM I agree, Walmart is awesome...oh wait, we don't have K-Marts or Targets around here. So it's all I know...once I went to a Target when I was at my grandma's house, but othere than that I've only been to Walmarts (am I deprived?!)
Max Whittaker 01-22-2002, 10:20 PM Well, all these K-Mart haters would explain a lot...

LOL!
Seems that most of the K*Mart's will stay open to somewhere in 2003...they've gotten a $2 million dollar loan.
I know one here has got to be closing....within 20 miles of me, there are three K*Marts!

Right on!!!! I love Target. Target's are a rich people's Wal-Mart (at least they seem that way to me.)
Our Wal-Mart is horrid. It's one of those stupid Super Wal-Mart's with the groceries and stuff and it's just awful. The way some people here feel about K-Mart, I feel about Wal-Mart. I'd much rather go to K-Mart. I fact, I get my pictures developed there sometimes.

LOL!
I guess you got a defected Wal*Mart there...thinking of returning it? Or have you sent your $50.00 rebate in to Zurich already? LOL Sorry...I don't even get that....I'll go back into my hole.
Warm & Fuzzy 01-22-2002, 11:30 PM Awwww! I liked K-mart.
((Actually, I've never been there...lol)) Except maybe ONCE...;)

Here's another K-Mart horror story LOL:
When I used to live in Oklahoma, there was this bad K-Mart. they had a Caser's Pizza built into it....and the sauce from their spagetti smelled awful! It would stink up the entire place..I once had the courage to go eat their...I order spagetti...the noodles were undercooked! Tsk, Tsk, Tsk.
Brian 01-22-2002, 11:59 PM One thing always sticks in my mind when I think of K*Mart. I have the movie Rain Man on DVD. My favorite scene is when the brothers are driving along the road and Ray says he is not wearing any underwear. Charlie says they'll go to the store and get boxer shorts but Ray says he only gets his underwear at K*Mart 400 Oak Street. He keeps babbling on about getting his clothes at K*Mart to the point where Charlie gets furious and pulls the car over and scream at the top of his lungs that underwear is underwear wherever you buy it in Cincinnati or wherever. You have got to watch that movie. It's funny
I like that movie because Ray is autistic. I'm autistic, too. I'm going to miss K*Mart.

You hit it right on the head....almost. The thing that makes Target so cool is that they make you think you are high class, without actually having to be. Things at Target generally run about the same price as Wal-Mart, or within about $5. But the stuff they sell at Target is so classy and trendy and much less junky than the stuff at Wal-Mart.
And to think, when I first started going to Target I loathed it, because I was so used to Wal-Mart, and Target was just so different. Now, Target is the first place I go if I have a choice.
Plus, Target's commercials are the coolest.
Beruche 01-23-2002, 02:35 AM I love Target! They never seem as crowded as Wal-mart and its not as bad as Wal-mart.The one over here is probably the worst in the whole state. Once when I actually went in there I was trying to get out the door but people would keep coming in and out and in and out. I think I was there an hour before I could actually leave.
Barnabas1 01-23-2002, 08:22 AM I prefer Target. Our K^Mart is the same...................
rangers689 01-23-2002, 09:57 AM When i was in New York in November last year i visited K-Mart and found it to be ok no worse than some of the shops in London In the UK the equivilant is probably Primark or Pound stretchers or The More Store the nick name for thes are cheepo shops some are better than others Primark is the best of them all:wave:
lukes42 01-23-2002, 01:07 PM K-Mart is not going away for ever. They just filed for Chapter 11 Bankrupty reorganization. They have to improve their performance as a business, and somehow stay in competition with Wal-Mart and K-Mart. K-Mart has about 2,100 stores across the country, and they are going to close the least productive stores. They may end up closing 200-300 stores, and that's a lot of employees without jobs. It sounds like the south will see the most K-Mart closings of them all. So, if you live in the south, you may be without K-Mart. I just hope K-Mart doesn't wind up down the same path as Woolworth's or Montgomery Wards.
As for my opinion, I am not much of a K-Mart fan either. The store where I am at is old, the isles are cramped, and the products they sell are not high quality. It seems that the only decent products they sell are the Martha Stewart line. It sounds like a lot of K-Marts around the country are like the ones where I live. I am a Target fan myself! :D We just had one open up where I live within the year, and Target has the best product line by far, compared to the other two discount stores. :)
AllIWantIsYourClutch 01-23-2002, 02:10 PM NOOOOOOO!!! I dont want my K-Mart to close!! Yea sure they are messy and smell like crap, but they have a LITTLE CEASARS!!! AH!!!!!!
TARGET AND WALMART RULE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Btw....There are still Phar-Mors here.......
Wendy's went bankrupt and they closed them all ova here, bu then they reopened one!
Babes_Cat 01-23-2002, 02:13 PM Hmmmm... I never been in one but they're like a scuzzy, little replica of a Walmart? *Shrugs* Whatever!
They're all just the same to me... Walmart, target, K*Mart, Walgreens..... Same difference!

I have a K-Mart near where I live, and I've never had a problem with it. I don't like Wal-Mart, though. The people in the Wal-Mart in my town are kind of strange. One time, for instance, my mom saw a guy walk into Wal-Mart with a big pet snake around his neck. He was grinning, like he wanted to cause a big scene.
My dad works for the Kmart headquarters in Troy, Michigan. Since he's one of the executives he knew about it before any of this happened. Here's the story:
Kmart has been losing money over the past couple of years by cutting advertising. They stopped doing the Rosie/Penney commercials when Rosie refused to help out a company that sells guns. So their advertising fell through and they used the extra money to go into a price war with Walmart - they lost.
Kmart has been around longer than Walmart, and I did always prefer Kmart. It's much more organized and friendly than Target. I don't know about Walmart, I never go there.
What will happen is that the company needs to turn things around fast. They will start closing stores, but it's not going out of busines....yet. My personal prediction: the company's run by a bunch of idiots (I've met them, I can say so) and they won't be able to turn things around in time. A lot of employees are gonna have to start looking soon.

I don't know what kind of K-Mart and Target stores you have been going too
I wonder if the K-Marts in Michigan are nicer because they are closer to corporate headquarters and fear an inspection or something.
I've always found K-Mart to be the most unorganized, dirtiest, and rudest of the discount chains, and Target to be cleanest and most organized.
That's weird how stores vary so much from location to location. Ok, well, not really. I guess it depends in the manager or something.
They probably are nicer since they're closer to world headquarters, but I do know that most have been slipping because of bad management. My daddy has to fly all over the country dealing with them... *sigh* he works to hard...
Barnabas1 11-11-2002, 09:48 AM My Mom and Dad were going grocery shopping one morning at the one here in Raleigh (Grocery store one) and they were trying to check out and two casheirs were there and kept saying "Go over there, he'll help you" they went all across the store until finally they just got up and left.:p
