The boyfriend didn't own the garage, his relative did. He mentioned how many years it would take to be a mechanic and James responded with the brain surgeon comment.

James wasn't in no position look down on anyone like he was acccomplished. I don't care if he wanted the best for thelma the guy seemed like he was focused and had goals.

I think that was the guy who was moving to California and wanted Thelma to join him. If it's him, I remember the two of them at a restaurant with J.J. and his date when they broke up.

I can understand their break up, sometimes you may not be in a position to just pick up and move across the country-lol

That's true. I understood why Thelma broke up with him. Although I really liked that guy (Larry, I think his name was.) Anyway, he was a lot better than her other boyfriend Ebby. Florida didn't like Ebby. She knew he would try to change Thelma too much. And she also knew that he would want more than one wife. I was glad when Thelma dumped Ebby. I felt bad for the Larry dude. I think James liked Larry. I remember him wanting to go to some sports game with him.

No. Larry had the tickets and invited James. Later, when Larry came back to the Evans' apartment with the good news about California, he wanted to take Thelma out to dinner to celebrate. Larry then gave James the tickets.
