Wendie Malick: "Hot in Cleveland" Saved Sitcoms (VIDEO)
3/5/12
Veteran sitcom star Wendie Malick said she had lost faith in TV comedies ... until "Hot in Cleveland" came around. While promoting the TV Land comedy on "Good Day LA", Malick said she thought sitcoms had hit a rough patch after her stints on "Dream On" and "Just Shoot Me".
"I think the basics are that these are four incredibly grounded human beings. We get to play outrageous women, but we all have real lives, you know family, friends... we love coming to work but we all have our own lives to go home to.
At one point I did think that sitcoms should go off into the desert and call it a day, cause there was a long, dry period when all of them were pretty juvenile, and silly and the writing wasn't very good. Now we have reality shows" (laughs)
However, Malick said TV Land helped reverse that course by pairing veteran writers with seasoned comics, like herself and the rest of the "Hot in Cleveland" cast, which includes Betty White, Jane Leeves and Valerie Bertinelli.
"In their wisdom TV Land realized that there still was an opportunity to put together good comedians and get great writing and people would tune in. There was something incredibly comforting and enjoyable about that."
