Benson - SURPRISE! "The Complete 2nd Season' is Coming to DVD Soon!

MOD release from Son will be available in April through the Warner Archive and Amazon CreateSpace

Benson (Robert Guillaume, TV's "Sports Night") confronts two new obstacles to maintaining order in the wacky household of the widowed Governor Gatling - Chief of Staff Clayton Endicott III (Rene Auberjonois) and Press Secretary Pete Downey (Ethan Phillips). While working to fix the problems these two newcomers create in the executive mansion, Benson manages to foil a foreign plot to steal a priceless gold statue, help his chief nemesis Gretchen Kraus (Inga Swenson) gain citizenship, and withstand a siege by protesters who've encircled the governor's mansion. And after he and Governor Gatling are caught by a muckraking press corps as they are helping an old friend who has taken ill in a bordello, the unexpected death of the State Budget Director leads to Benson being elevated to the post. Newly remastered.

It's been close to five years since the mid-2007 DVD release of the premiere season, but then Sony stalled the home video sets of this program, since sales numbers were far below expectations. Since then fans have been hoping the studio would either give the sitcom another try themselves, or else license it out for release by another studio (as they have with many other stalled-on-DVD shows).

Now we're pleased to tell you that Benson - The Complete 2nd Season, the first season where the cast was joined by Rene Auberjonois (Star Trek: Deep Space Nine) and Ethan Phillips (Star Trek Voyager), is coming to DVD at long last on April 3rd. And no, there's nothing to "Shout!" about here: Sony is actually releasing this title themselves. However, it won't be available in stores. Rather, Sony has elected to make it part of their manufacture-on-demand (MOD) program, which means it will be available online from the Warner Archive (at WBShop.com) and CreateSpace (at Amazon.com).

The title isn't available for pre-order yet, and package art hasn't been finalized at this time. We can tell you that it will be a 3-DVD set, running 580 minutes, priced at $35.99 SRP. Guest stars during this second season (out of 7 seasons total) included Jerry Seinfeld, Ted Danson and character actor Ed Peck, all in recurring roles. Stay tuned for updates, as more becomes available!

i think we are going to see a lot more shows come out this way in the future because it is so much less of a risk for them

either way, I'm glad that we'll finally see more Benson (although that price seems a little steep to me if they have any hope of reasonable sales)

Don't they always jack up the MSRP on everything though and then you don't usually see it at that price anyway?

I was pretty surprised (pleasantly) when I saw this news item.

Marcy has three episodes in season 3, so I hope that one, at the least, follows. :D Would be nice for the whole show to be released, of course.

So I just read this again, and am I understanding correctly that we will need to order this online and that it won't be available in stores?

The cover art looks a bit low budget... oh well!

I thought the same thing when I saw it but quite honestly, all the rest of the seasons could have that same picture for all I care, just release them. :D

Don't care much about the quality of the cover art, only the video. :)

Being a MOD title, no surprise the cover art is as basic as it gets. I agree that what's most important is that it's being made available. :)

Well I got mine yesterday and have been watching since. Everything seemed fine until I popped in Disc 3. Not only are the episodes out of order as per the episode guides I have seen, but they have definitely included the first two episodes of Season 3. The good thing is that I am not missing any episodes from S2 as some apparently were. I won't complain about the bonus eps, but I worry it will start messing things up going forward if/when S3 gets released.

Nice to see these eps uncut though. I am seeing parts I have either never seen before or don't remember. :)

Might be time to do the S2 episode threads. :D

OOOH - do S2 threads! I loved the ones you did from the first season. Are there any extras in this set?

Well, if you consider the first two episodes from Season 3 "extras" then yes. ;) :D (Otherwise no bloopers or special features, unfortunately).

Yes I think I will do S2 threads, I just want to make sure we have some participants.....:)

You mean comments that the set was all messed up? I think by now you can feel more confident that they'll get it right. Also I think someone posted that it was replaced for free when it wasn't right so you can probably put your mind at ease. :)

on this site. Sounds like the missing-episode issue indeed was fixed. :)

So, what is the deal with Benson - The Complete Second Season? After it was suddenly pulled last month and rescheduled for May 1, we reported to you last month that the title was pulled due to the set being defective, missing the first episode of the season, containing two episodes of the third season, and the episodes on the third disc all being out of order. Well, now, we have received our review copy (look for our review soon), and can report that the set has improved. The first episode of the season has been added to the beginning of Disc 1 on the "improved" version. Disc 3 is still the same, but it actually isn't a mistake that the episodes are out of order. Apparently, airdate and production order was the same for all of the episodes on the first two discs, but for the episodes on Disc 3, those were aired in a different order than the order in which they were produced... so really, it isn't a mistake, but rather just confusion (although we think most fans do prefer airdate order). And the first two episodes of the third season are still on the end of Disc 3, but that isn't exactly a bad thing, but rather a nice little accidental bonus. The important thing here is that we do have all of the second season episodes in the set now. We'll have a review of this "new and improved" set very soon.

The audio/video quality is excellent on the "Benson" season 2 set and it's definitely worth the money. I do however miss not having an episode guide printed somewhere on the package but I'm not going to complain if cutting out the frills is what it takes for the release of these classic series.
The uncut episodes are great because I didn't get to see the first 3 seasons in their original run. I just wish they would go ahead and make the remainder of the series available as well. :)
