View Full Version : If 'Mike & Molly' Both Lost Weight, Would The Show Survive?
Brian Damage 02-19-2012, 03:25 PM We've seen it before, actors and actresses have lost significant weight and all of a sudden the ratings plummet. Valerie Harper's 'Rhoda' comes quickly to mind. If the actors Billy Gardell and Melissa McCarthy lost weight, would their sitcom fall to the same fate? Heck, I remember when Keri Russell cut her hair on 'Felicity' and the show tanked! Stranger things have happened on TV. Your thoughts?

Mr. Television 02-19-2012, 05:25 PM I think it would survive. It's nice to see a couple that isn't Hollywood glamorous but I think what makes the show a hit is the relationships among all the characters. I think the show has one of the best ensembles on tv.

Really? I have to watch more eps of this show then. lol As for the weight loss, I agree, it is nice to see a show without actors who are gorgeous.

Mike's mom cracks me up on every episode she's on. lol I like pretty much all the characters now. It took me awhile to warm up to this show but I watch it every week now.

So in your opinion, if Mike and Molly lost a ton of weight and started "looking the part" of hollywood stars, that wouldn't rub you the wrong way at all?

I think the producers said that if they lost weight, it would be worked into the script. So I think they would keep it real. The only thing I think would be lost would be the fat jokes which I can do without anyway. Most of them involve Carl and Mike. What makes the show work for me is the chemistry among the cast.

well said :)
Yong Fang 03-03-2012, 02:37 AM This is the only show in the CBS Monday night block that I watch. I never watched 2 1/2 Men and I watched Broke Girls for about 10 minutes. Mike and Molly is really a funny, charming show with great characters.
Looking at Billy Gardell, he looks to be well over 400, maybe 425 lbs. He is 42 years old. Melissa McCarthy looks to be around 250 lbs., but this is a conservative estimate. I am more worried about Gardell. I do not know the actor or his personal habits or if he drinks or smokes. I tend to think, by looking at him and reading his Wiki page that he probably likes beer. He is an avid Steelers fan, with that, a lot of football fans tend to drink more alcohol and eat unhealthier foods like hot wings and doritos. Again, maybe not him.
Another thing is that this is Gardell's first "big break" as it were and his show is doing well, which allows him more comforts. I am also overweight, (around 300 lbs.) and I do eat food for comfort and I also drink alcohol (not everyday but enough).
I am actually surprised that some "weight loss" company hasn't scooped one or both actors to be in a weight loss program. If it worked, and however millions of people watch the show on Mondays would be a great bonanza for them.
I would think that in real life, the Chicago Police would have suspended or fired Officer Mike for being so huge. In real life, especially in freaking Chicago, cops are running around, chasing bad guys etc. Again, I think if I am Billy Gardell and I went for a walk, he would be winded long before me. This is about the only unrealistic thing I have seen in this show so far.
Some fat actors live to old age. Jackie Gleason was also huge not to mention being a chain smoker, and he made it to 71. However, many others die young. People like John Candy died at 43. Another example that popped into my head was Shirley Hemphill (What's Happening) who died at 52, and Fred Berry who played Rerun, died at 53. Nell Carter died at 54.
But, people like my mother, who was as heavy as Melissa McCarthy is this summer will be 81 years old. She doesn't smoke and rarely drinks, if at all anymore. My mother has "struggled" with her weight her entire life, and this has always been an issue in my home with my mother and myself from my ******* father who was of normal weight. As an adult, I have a screw it (I use the f-word instead of screw but I am respectful here) attitude and eat what I like, when I want it. Life is too damn short to deny yourself.
To "Stuck in the 70's" I think the actress who plays Victoria (Katy Mixon) is gorgeous. Also, Swoozie Kurtz is 67 years old, and looks fantastic for a woman her age.

Yea I agree that Katy Mixon is very pretty. I remember watching Swoozie Kurtz on a sitcom in the early 1980's called Love Sidney. She was very pretty in that show and I agree she still looks pretty good. I didn't even know she was 67. She doesn't look it.
LillySoFrilly 07-09-2012, 05:04 PM I have watched the show from the beginning and love it. If they lost weight it would not matter, cause the show is so funny. The best cast on TV. Maybe they do not want to lose weight and are comfortable in their bodies.
SurrealFox 08-05-2012, 04:59 AM All the characters in the show are great, and as long as they worked it into the story line it would survive I think. Kind of along the lines of when Dan and Roseanne would diet.
babbagene 12-16-2015, 05:40 AM If these two fat pigs lost weight the show would be cancelled immediately ( you got your answer ,McCarthy lost weight and now the show is cancelled) , it's very clear that this show was given to these people not based on talent but based on being two OBESE PiGS! Of course the show is not being renewed , McCarthy has lost two much weight!

What a wonderful human being you must be.
babbagene 12-16-2015, 11:03 PM No , just very realistic and truthful! TRY IT,
Chocolate Moose 12-17-2015, 11:23 AM I doubt either would be Hollywood thin but I think it would be funny to see them diet and exercise - not in a making fun kind of way, but in a way that a lot of us struggle with.
Do we assume Swoosie Kurtz has had work done? She can't look like naturally, can she?
And yes, I adore both Mom characters and the sister! And the partner - it's a great ensomble show!

I herd that's why it's canceled because since Melissa has lost so much weight she longer fits the character. So they want her fat and un healthy?
