View Full Version : Who Do You Think Is Bob's Best Friend? Family Ties Forever! 02-19-2012, 02:55 AM Who do you think is Bob's best friend? Howard and Jerry had an argument over who was Bob's best friend. Do you think it's Howard or Jerry? Or both? catlover79 02-19-2012, 03:55 AM I'll give the edge to Jerry because they also worked on the same floor, and they enjoyed going to sporting events together. (Howard wasn't really a sports fan like Bob and Jerry.) Retro4Life 02-19-2012, 04:29 AM Yeah, I gotta go with Jerry. I think Bob liked Howard, but it almost seemed like he kind of liked him because he HAD to most of the time; Howard just always stopped by, while Jerry was someone that Bob kind of sought out for friendship. TVFactFan 02-20-2012, 01:15 AM Howard was Emily's girlfriend The end LOL catlover79 02-20-2012, 01:33 AM Suzanne Pleshette said it herself in one of the DVD commentaries about Howard: "He was our idiot child"!! biffbronson 02-20-2012, 08:48 AM When I went back to watching this series again, after not having seen an episode for years and years, I was surprised by how much airtime Peter Bonerz had. Overall, Bob spent a lot more time with him than with Bill Daily/Roger and they did more together. So I think Jerry is the answer -- but if we disregard the time spent together, you might say the true buddy would have to be Cliff (Tom Poston) -- with limited appearances...! ajgenard 02-21-2012, 05:38 AM So I think Jerry is the answer -- but if we disregard the time spent together, you might say the true buddy would have to be Cliff (Tom Poston) -- with limited appearances...! I fully concur about Cliff Murdock (aka "The Peeper"). All his appearances on the show are a laugh riot. Seeing Bob delight at the mere mention of his old college buddy really drives it home. It also helps that Tom Poston and Bob Newhart were real-life longtime friends. Also, some of Howard's funniest lines come from getting his nickname wrong almost in an intentional and jealous manner. Hearing him say "OHHH you mean The Weeper?" or The Creeper or something else equally off-base has me in stitches everytime. But for a regular friend I'd definitely say Jerry. He sometimes was seeking advice from Jerry and the two actually did stuff together. Where as Howard seemed more incidental to Bob's life. Lisa_Eva 06-03-2012, 07:59 PM In a weird way, they were all his best friend, they just served different roles in his life. I'm not sure if I could really definitively choose one person and say they were Bob's best friend, but I would like to add another person to the list: Emily. Their marriage was great because it operated on the idea that they were friends before they were a couple, wouldn't you agree? Emily said herself, when Jerry and Howard were arguing over who the best friend actually was, that she was in fact, Bob's true best friend...and kind of proved it too, in my opinion. At the same time, Bob always referred to Jerry as his best friend and nobody else, while Howard referred to Bob as his best friend, never the other way around. And as for Cliff...I would call him the oldest, most trusted friend maybe, which in a way is a rank above best friend. While a he was a true goofball, Cliff's the kind of guy that Bob may've made executor of his will, godfather of his child, or something like that. I could never see him leaving a responsibility of that nature to Jerry or Howard. And as for Howard, I agree that he was kind of more Emily's friend...kind of in the way that Roger Healey became more of Jeannie's friend than Tony's on I Dream of Jeannie...he spent so much more time with her (both Emily and Jeannie)...and Bob/Tony both eventually kind of discounted Howard/Roger...interesting dynamic... I agree with Monika. Emily is Bob's true best Friend. I agree with her comments on Jerry, Howard, anthe Peeper too. catlover79 06-04-2012, 06:22 AM I agree with Monika. Emily is Bob's true best Friend. I agree with her comments on Jerry, Howard, anthe Peeper too. Actually, I think you agree with Lisa Eva. ;) Lisa_Eva 06-06-2012, 01:58 AM Another element to this: it's almost like Jerry was Bob's best friend, but Howard was Bob AND Emily's best friend as a couple...you could look at it this way too. A lot of couples are friends with couples, they just happened to be friends with the one single guy. catlover79 06-06-2012, 03:14 AM ^ :yeahthat Marvo301 06-06-2012, 01:45 PM Actually, I think you agree with Lisa Eva. ;) Oops! Sorry Lisa Eva and sorry Monika. Lisa_Eva 06-06-2012, 11:53 PM It's okay! Lol, just glad you agree with me! catlover79 06-07-2012, 01:30 AM No need for apologies!! Lisa_Eva 06-07-2012, 02:37 AM Absolutely no need. :) Bonniegirl 07-10-2014, 08:40 PM Jerry for sure. Jerry was cool. I'd love to hang out with him. Howard on the other hand was goofy and annoying. It was like bob put up with him because he was a neighbor and Bob being a psychiatrist , he couldn't turn a person away if they wanted to be his friend. Howard really liked Bob and considered him his best friend but I think Howard annoyed Bob who didn't have the heart to tell Howard to go home! Jerry was his BFF! Howard was his patient LOL Bonniegirl 07-10-2014, 11:54 PM Howard was his patient LOL Yeah, pretty much. He had to deal with people with issues all day because of his profession , only to come home to a guy who was a bit nutty! TVFactFan 07-10-2014, 11:56 PM Yeah, pretty much. He had to deal with people with issues all day because of his profession , only to come home to a guy who was a bit nutty! Mr. Carlin was more normal than Howard LOL Bonniegirl 07-11-2014, 12:12 AM Mr. Carlin was more normal than Howard LOL LOL!!! Mr. Carlin with his bad toupe'!!! JSP 07-15-2014, 12:25 AM There should have been a choice for Carol. Jerry and Howard to me, especially Jerry, seemed a little too self-serving to be considered a good friend for Bob. Howard needed Bob because he was mentally ill. Jerry is the kind of guy that would turn Bob into the police for the reward money if Bob was hiding from the law. I don't think Carol would have done that, even if she wasn't Bob's employee. gopyle 04-01-2015, 11:33 PM I would say Jerry. I think Howard was a friend also, but more just because he was the neighbor. Crusinforabrusin 01-01-2016, 10:21 PM I'd have to go with Jerry. They worked on the same floor together, Sometimes ate lunch together, they appear together in a lot of scenes. Although Howard does have his fair share of encounters with Bob TVFactFan 01-01-2016, 10:23 PM Howard belonged in a mental institution |
