Mary is in general, easy-going, refined and above all else, really likes to get along with others. Sometimes, some characters on the show mistake her kindness for weakness. But when PUSH COMES TO SHOVE, and the caps are there bec. Mary does have to be backed against a wall before she really asserts herself. But when against the wall, assert she will, and has come back with some really nifty "one-two" punches.

My favorite "MKSB moment is the ep where Ted is a straight man to another anchor. When Ted finds out, he tries to be the funny one, and its a horror show. He insults one minority after another, and finally, Mary, in a fit of exasperation yells at Ted on the air to "shut up". Of course she's horrified right after she does that. But Lou, who was watching the fiasco from the sideliens just LOVED it (you could tell). I think the viewing audience loved it too. What made Mary endearing was she really was a still water that ran deep.

What's your favorite MKSB moment?

(My second fav is when she lays down the 20 second ultimatum to Sue Ann when Sue Ann is having that affair with Lars - another classic ep. - GOD I love this show

I like it in a season1 episode when Phyllis is Mary's asistant or "Co-worker"

as Phyllis prefers to call it.

After doing no work ,Mary loses it and gets so wound up she keeps forgetting Ted and Murray's name.

Also in season 4 when Ted steals Mary's graduation story and as Mary is

telling him off the end of class bell goes in the nightschool .

"Nobody move!" screams Mary,lol!

Dang, you stole my answer! Seriously, even before I opened this thread, that scene was in my head. But my 2nd fave has to be her confronting Sue Ann in her studio at the end of "The Lars Affair." It was so great, b/c I think Sue Ann was actually a little scared! LOL!

As well she (Sue Ann) should be. When Mary started to simmer she was a force to be reckoned with!

Mary definately got tougher in the later seasons.

Maybe with no Rhoda around, she had to be tougher, she did make the odd

acid retort make to Sue Ann,who certainly deserved it!

There was one episode where Mary laid into the woman sportscaster because she didn't report the news right. She was like "BJ, sit down", and then "YOU'RE FIRED!"

Yeah, there were so many good ones. It was hard to pick. But the one where she tells Ted to shut up is a classic. I remember the first time I saw it back in the 70s, I spit out my diet soda when I heard it.

One of the many joys of TMTMS is the fact that the characters actually evolve like real people throughout the series run. Mary goes from a wide-eyed innocent to a knowing, seasoned player in the local news game. Rhoda goes from a funny schlep, channeling Barbra Streisand in Funny Girl, to a beautiful blossoming woman, able to compete with anyone for a date. All the co-starring characters are given a chance to grow and mature within the parameters of their initial characterizations. There are so many "Mary Kicks Some Butt" moments it's hard to single out just one.

Precisely! (How do I love this program, let me count the ways, the many many ways...how fortunate our TV screens were blessed with its magnificence)

Loved that one too. The one that came to my mind was "Mary's Insomnia," when everybody kept coming in Mary's bathroom when she was taking a bath, and Ted's glasses fell in the tub, and Mary was like, "Don't you dare!!!" And screamed. Classic. :) If that one counts...

Leigh Ann,
That entire scene is priceless! "Don't worry, Mary. This'll only take an hour." If Mary had strangled him right then, I don't think anybody would've blamed her! LOL!
