View Full Version : How old are fans of classic tv shows (50s - 80s)
FanofRetroTV 02-16-2012, 09:55 AM Hi, all I was wondering if there are others out there my age (28) who love classic tv more then the crap they put on tv now. There are a few shows I'll watch on today but overall I'll take classics over new any day!
BigManMike 02-16-2012, 10:43 AM I like classic shows more than most of the shows on today and I'm only 21.
biffbronson 02-17-2012, 09:34 AM Back when I was in my 20s, I regularly watched old shows like I Love Lucy, The Honeymooners, The Donna Reed Show, Ozzie & Harriet, and Leave It to Beaver. I'm a LOT older than that now, but I'll always favor Classic TV!

Seconded! As you can see from my signature, I have amassed quite a number of TV Shows on DVD. The Vast Majority are from the 1950s, 60s and 70s. There are more fingers on my hands than there are shows from the last 12 years in my collection!
LUNCH 02-17-2012, 12:34 PM I think it is some kind of stereotype(or whatever term one prefers) that only people over a certain age enjoy classic or in other words superior television shows. I'm no expert, but I think the over-all answer is simple. If a person likes great television they are going to watch mainly the older shows--no matter what age they are. If a person likes to view subpar tv or garbage, they are going to watch modern television--regardless of what their age is.
60's TV Fan 02-17-2012, 01:21 PM I'm 40, and most of what I would consider my favorite tv shows were produced before I was born. Many of those shows have been favorites of mine since I was a little kid, and I suspect will continue to be my favorites for the rest of my life.
Retro76 02-17-2012, 02:16 PM I'm 35 but have always loved Classic TV forever since the good old days of independent analog TV. My love for Classic TV increased further with Nick at Nite and TV Land (the OLD one) in the 1990s.
FanofRetroTV 02-17-2012, 04:57 PM Glad to hear there are poeple like me out there. I eat lunch with poeple how won't no the difference between Archie Bunker and Hawkeye! lol.
Adem422 02-25-2012, 08:09 PM Same and i just turned 20 last month.
benjamoon 02-26-2012, 01:02 AM I'm 25 and love classic TV thanks to Nick at Nite back in the day. I watched it every Friday night as a kid (not TGIF!) and have been hooked ever since
MickeyMac 02-28-2012, 07:08 PM I am 37 but have been into classic TV my whole life. I grew up in the 80's and 90's and hated those shows the first time around (Miami Vice, Dallas and Magnum PI being major exceptions).
littletydramon 02-28-2012, 07:35 PM I'm 23 and joined this site when I was around 13...no joke. Back than I was a huge fan of classic tv...taping tvland..nick...etc. to collect my favorite shows and ctching the rare ones when tv land would air them. My interest is still pretty strong. I know at least I would win any theme song contests. Lol.

Torgo 03-01-2012, 11:55 AM 41, and I like shows from all decades that entertain me.
CommonTater 03-01-2012, 02:33 PM I was born in the mid 1950's. We had 3 channels when I was a kid and back then something good was always on. We sat together each night to watch our shows and my parents never worried about us seeing something inappropriate. TV was entertaining then and reality was something we lived each day but didn't watch on TV.
I'm grateful I grew up when I did and I feel very blessed to have had shows like Carol Burnett and all the rest that we enjoyed.
Mr. Television 03-01-2012, 02:40 PM I'm 46 and my favorite shows are from the 1950's-1980's. I still watch a lot of current shows but they don't compare to the classics.
fol_fan1989 03-01-2012, 04:35 PM I'm 22 and I like classic tv more than the shows that are on now.
goldengirlsfreak 03-01-2012, 06:47 PM I'm 16 and I prefer most classic TV shows than today's shows.
duckie 03-01-2012, 07:43 PM No doubt the older sitcoms are the best. Other than Two and a Half Men, I couldnt tell you the names of any other current sitcoms. I like the 60s and 70s the best.

It amazes me how many younger people prefer the oloder shows to what's being offered today. You KNOW TV is bad when this thing happens. I know several people who have "Cut the Cord" because they don't want their children to see the garbage that spews out from the TV Set these days. A fellow in my Neighborhood asked me where I got my dvds and I told him, he has since done the exact thing I did a little over five years ago, namely cancelled his subscription and re-allocated the $134.00 he used to budget for Cable for Programming on DVDs. I visited my Sister yesterday, she was talking to one of her Kid's Teachers, (Her Youngest Son has been diagnosed with ADHD). The Teacher told my sister how her son's grades have improved since December, she also told her how she noticed her Son Play-Acting during recess, pretending he was a Characture from an old Cartoon she hadn't seen in AGES. I told the Teacher it was I who gave my Sister a BOATLOAD of DVDs for her kids to watch, and how she "Cut the Cord" and won't let her children watch ANY TV until they finish their Homework and Play outside for an Hour. My Sister's Oldest Son also noted how he could do his Homework and still have time to watch his favorate Shows, because of the time formerly used to watch commercials during those shows. Thanks to DVDs he can have his cake and eat it too!
rezny717 03-01-2012, 10:13 PM I'm in my 50's,and LOVE classic TV,ESPECIALLY 1960's shows(the 1970's and 1980's shows are good too,,but not as good as the 1960's,when TV,was ,in my opinion,at its best.).Long live classic TV!
Melissa197801 03-01-2012, 11:03 PM Honestly I'm 33 and a fan of both some Classic tv and even shows on today real scripted shows and I love HD tv but I cannot stand stupid fake reality tv and wish it would all go off air.

I wish reality tv would die too.
YardLion2009 03-02-2012, 02:27 PM Personally, I'm only 27 and I prefer the classics myself; I watch them either online or from my DVD collection, with commercials of course.
ThomasE 03-02-2012, 08:13 PM I prefer the 50's-90's era. I'm 34 now and grew up as a teen in the 90's. The mid to late 90's is when things started change up in tv imo. I found my felf getting bored. There are some programs that I still watch today but it is not the same as it used to be. I know it sounds cliche but it is the truth.

I trust you are talking about "Retromercials", those vintage Ads that they just don't do anymore. There is a name for those who prefer today's Commercials to those made from the 1950s to the 1970s.............
:brentMASOCHISTS!:brent
Penny Lane 03-04-2012, 11:15 AM I was born in 1950(yikes!) and we always had a tv. I do remember watching The Honeymooners (my dad's favorite) and I Love Lucy in prime time. But I prefer the sitcoms of the 70's over the 50's and 60's.:D
*Pleasant Tomorrow* 03-05-2012, 01:51 AM I'm 22. I like shows from all times.

YoliUSA 03-07-2012, 12:04 PM I'm 23 and I only watch classic TV shows (on DVD). I also sometimes watch some 90's shows on reruns. I've tried to watch a couple of modern shows but I get bored quickly and lose interest after a few episdoes. The classics are way better.
KurtfromPitts 03-07-2012, 12:45 PM I'll be 50 this coming Friday.
bmasters9 03-08-2012, 10:08 AM I just turned 31 a couple of months ago (Jan. 3).
Silly Lily 03-10-2012, 08:30 PM I'm 31. I like shows from the 80s-90s because that's what I grew up with. I like some older than that and many current shows too. I like all genres. Classic doesn't automatically equal good, nor does current equal bad.
Michael cole 11-15-2015, 06:20 AM I like all the classic tv shows and I'm only 14 years old.
Regulus 11-15-2015, 06:28 PM 392 (In "Doggy Years"). :dog:
