View Full Version : What do you think led to the show improved ratings in 1979? Mike Evans? New Slot?
TVFactFan 02-12-2012, 10:26 PM or New episode ideas?
Right before 1979, the show finished at #56 and #49 the previous two seasons and then all of a sudden in 1979, the show climbed all the way back to #7 in the ratings.
Was Mike Evans a large part of this since fans knew he was returning?
Was it CBS moving the show to Sunday Nights?
Was it that this was the beginning of George softening up?
The show no longer airing after Good Times?
I think it had to with the Time slot mainly because Good times was the lead in on CBS and by that time John Amos was gone and the show was already losing fans. Also a little bit of Mike Evans returning to the show

I know you like the late Mike Evans Sol and no disrespect to him, but I doubt he had anything to do with it. Probably just the time slot.

Brian think about a show you like right now in 2012. And a character you liked was gone for 3 years and you read in TV guide and magazines that the actor is returning to the show. Number one, you don't know what he looks like after 4 years and you are anxious to see how he has changed from when he was on the show before.

I see what you are saying, but Mike Evans was so non existent on the Spin-off. You could tell his heart wasn't 100% in it like on All in the Family.

I am sure that didn't please him one bit. I would've been interested in Mike Evans in college with a recurring role for Rob Reiner.

Yes I see a sitcom there with Bunker dropping in once in while. Wonder why they never did it?

Bunker never visited Jefferson, when Jefferson lived next door. I can't imagine Bunker traveling all the way to Manhattan, from Queens, to visit Jefferson!
TV_on_the_Porch 02-16-2012, 02:43 AM The show was moved to Sundays in June of 1979. It immediately shot into the top ten, so it wasn't Mike Evans (and it wasn't Jay Hammer!), it was just the much better time slot.
Incidentally, Good Times only aired in 8:30 slots that season and the handful of weeks the two aired back-to-back were too late in the season to have been reflected in the ratings anyway. So John Amos being still gone from Good Times three years after he left...really not a factor....

Maybe Edith since she was friends with Louise but not Archie

Good Times was not on the schedule that season, it was canceled after Aug 1, 1979

That was a error on my part
Sonny Carson 02-27-2012, 04:28 PM The people are right that moving to Sundays helped the ratings go up. But to say that the original Lionel who was also the best Lionel coming back didn't help the ratings, is a bold statement. I agree that it was mostly the new time slot but I think the original Lionel coming back intrigued alot of the people who stopped watching the show. I mean this wasn't a show that moved up 10 spots in the ratings list, this was a show that moved up about 46 to 50 spots in the ratings. That's a huge jump and show's more than one thing helped the ratings go up.

It was both I think

Don't get me wrong, I was very glad to see Mike Evans back that fall. You're right about the dramatic jump in ratings. The point I made--and maintain--is that the ratings jump was as dramatic as it was immediate--three months before the sixth season began. Mike Evans wasn't in any of those summer 1979 episodes, nor was there even any press about his return until shortly before the season began.
Bold statement..? :lookaroun I think on this one the facts just speak for themselves.

So you read every magazine and newspaper during the summer of 1979 to confirm that Mike Evans return was never mentioned????
TV_on_the_Porch 02-27-2012, 05:53 PM Yes.

If you ask troll questions you're going to get troll answers. Better yet, if my recollection as somebody who was interested in and did pay attention then to the very things you are curious about now is of no value to you then just put me on ignore.

You want me to put you on ignore because you know that statement is false. And Im going to expose you later this evening to show how wrong you are Mr. Big Time
TV_on_the_Porch 02-27-2012, 06:35 PM If you can find an article from July umpteen 1979 that about how the guy who quit playing Lionel four years ago is coming back to The Jeffersons I'm sure you'll post it and do a little victory jig. If. First, that's a big if. Second...
for the purposes of the OP and everything I have posted about the OP...
WHAT THE HELL DIFFERENCE DOES IT MAKE?!
The Jeffersons entered the top ten not three months, not one month, not one week later--the very first week it moved to Sunday. That. speaks. for. itself.
The only thing you'll expose by continuing this is more of your butt.

I want to challenge your statement that it was not mentioned because my passion is TV Facts and I will find the information.
