'3rd rock from the sun' is an expression referring to planet earth that predates the TV show of that name by...well, by a long time.

'30 Rock' is an abbreviation of 30 Rockefeller Center, the address of the former RCA Building, currently known as the GE Building.

The fact that both similar-sounding phrases became the titles for hit NBC comedies is an interesting coincidence and nothing more.

Um they didn't. 30 Rock stands for 30 Rockefeller Plaza, a place in New York with SNL is taped, and where the fictional show within-a-show "TGS" is filmed.

"3rd Rock from the Sun" is a reference to the planet of EARTH.

For one, 3rd Rock wasn't that big a hit. It had been off the air for A LONG TIME before 30 Rock hit. Also, other than the fact they both have the number 3 and the word Rock in it, the shows have NOTHING in common.

going by the logic you use, that would mean producers of "24" wanted to capture viewers who watched "227" because they both had the number 2 in it. See how little sense that makes?

It did seem like a coincidence that the titles were so similar but I never thought it was stolen. I mean, they both air(ed) on NBC. But that's really interesting about the meaning behind the two titles. Thanks for sharing. Didn't know 30 Rock was an abreviation for Rockefeller Center. Very cool!

To the original topic though- I can see the similarity in names, but I don't think the producers of 30 Rock purposely tried to borrow and/or steal its name from 3rd. Rock from the Sun. Interesting theory though.
