View Full Version : Why did 30 Rock steal its name from 3rd Rock from the Sun? Blackout 02-12-2012, 05:22 AM i always thought that was lame TV_on_the_Porch 02-12-2012, 09:39 AM '3rd rock from the sun' is an expression referring to planet earth that predates the TV show of that name by...well, by a long time. '30 Rock' is an abbreviation of 30 Rockefeller Center, the address of the former RCA Building, currently known as the GE Building. The fact that both similar-sounding phrases became the titles for hit NBC comedies is an interesting coincidence and nothing more. factsoflife 02-12-2012, 01:41 PM Um they didn't. 30 Rock stands for 30 Rockefeller Plaza, a place in New York with SNL is taped, and where the fictional show within-a-show "TGS" is filmed. "3rd Rock from the Sun" is a reference to the planet of EARTH. Blackout 02-12-2012, 03:27 PM still sounds like a stolen name to me Brian Damage 02-12-2012, 04:08 PM still sounds like a stolen name to me Not even close lol USATVFAN 02-12-2012, 05:09 PM They did not steal any Name! They are not even close and totally different. 3rd Rock From The Sun is named after Planet Earth being the Third planet because the Earth is The Third Rock From the Sun! That where 3rd Rock from the Sun got it name. 30 Rock is named after the Address 30 Rockefeller Plaza which is the location of NBC World Headquarters(Location of Today Show, Nightly, SNL, Late Night and more). TGS is a fictional show on 30 Rock which takes place in NBC in the fictional 30 Rock. 30 Rock is short for 30 Rockefeller Center. robyrob 02-12-2012, 06:48 PM still sounds like a stolen name to me i am still pissed that you stole your user name from Al Jolson  Zoneboy 02-12-2012, 07:27 PM I'm amazed that it takes 3 people to answer one question. Blackout 02-12-2012, 11:23 PM clearly NBC was trying to get viewers from 3rd Rock from the Sun to tune into 30 rock name recognition Brian Damage 02-12-2012, 11:28 PM clearly NBC was trying to get viewers from 3rd Rock from the Sun to tune into 30 rock name recognition C'mon now, you can't be serious??? LOL EmoJoe 02-13-2012, 01:31 AM :rotflmao: factsoflife 02-13-2012, 01:31 AM C'mon now, you can't be serious??? LOL That may be the silliest thing I've ever heard. For one, 3rd Rock wasn't that big a hit. It had been off the air for A LONG TIME before 30 Rock hit. Also, other than the fact they both have the number 3 and the word Rock in it, the shows have NOTHING in common. going by the logic you use, that would mean producers of "24" wanted to capture viewers who watched "227" because they both had the number 2 in it. See how little sense that makes? *Pleasant Tomorrow* 02-13-2012, 01:33 AM This is the most beautiful thread I have ever had the privilege of laying eyes upon. Because if one TV show was a household name in 2006, it was 3rd Rock from the Sun, Zoneboy 02-13-2012, 01:21 PM Isn't there a parallel universe somewhere in which Earth is the 30th rock from the sun? Blackout 02-19-2012, 12:40 AM Isn't there a parallel universe somewhere in which Earth is the 30th rock from the sun? no? It did seem like a coincidence that the titles were so similar but I never thought it was stolen. I mean, they both air(ed) on NBC. But that's really interesting about the meaning behind the two titles. Thanks for sharing. Didn't know 30 Rock was an abreviation for Rockefeller Center. Very cool! Blackout 02-19-2012, 02:53 AM John Lithgow must be spinning in his grave well, you know, if he were dead. Blackout 02-26-2012, 12:29 AM Isn't there a parallel universe somewhere in which Earth is the 30th rock from the sun? i am sure there is Blackout 11-18-2014, 01:17 AM still sounds like a stolen name to me fact MacLeaper 11-18-2014, 06:49 PM John Lithgow must be spinning in his grave well, you know, if he were dead. Okay- I just caught the qualifier at the end. Yeah, John Lithgow isn't in his grave yet, so I guess he's just spinning.;) To the original topic though- I can see the similarity in names, but I don't think the producers of 30 Rock purposely tried to borrow and/or steal its name from 3rd. Rock from the Sun. Interesting theory though. KurtfromPitts 11-19-2014, 12:01 PM 30 Rock stole from 3rd Rock? Right, and The Middle stole from Malcolm In The Middle. |
