I agree with what you said and think you said it well.

the guy is a jackass; he can raise his daughter any way he wants to, but what he did was comparable to reading her diary and then setting the couch on fire - he could have just grounded her and donated the laptop to a school or charity.

Well said. I sense his hurt and frustration, but like you, think he handled it in a reactive, inappropriate way. But we've all made mistakes, and hopefully he, and his daughter will have learned from this experience.

The father did the right thing.

This was not comparable to reading her diary. If she'd written in her diary what she posted on Facebook and her father somehow found out about it, then the two of them could work it out between themselves. But once the daughter goes public with this stuff, all bets are off.

What the daughter wrote on Facebook was totally inappropriate for a 15 year old snot who probably has a hard time wiping her OWN a**.

She wants to show her friends how cool she is. Fine. Expect to pay some heavy consequences. Besides, this was apparently NOT the first time she did something like this, and she was warned about doing it again. She went one step too far in calling what she assumed was his bluff. Only he wasn't bluffing.

The father has a perfect right to do what he did to her laptop, since he's undoubtedly the one who paid for it. He gave it to her, he can take it away. There's no constitutional right to a laptop. He doesn't have to donate it to charity or a school.

Now the question is, will the stupid 15 year old snot learn anything from THIS experience? Hopefully, she'll remember the consequences of doing something stupid like this long after she forgets the names of all of the other snots she's trying to impress.

I did not hear any unreasonable comments from the father in that video.

She will NEVER forgive them for this. She's young. What's their excuse? And twenty years from now, when she's grown up and actually moved out of hillbillyville and made something of herself, she'll look back in horror. This will be online FOREVER!.... :(

I guess their excuse is that he's a hillbilly, right? But he did mention that the chores that she is responsible for would take less than 15 min/day. So let's double that to 30 minutes. What's the big deal from the daughter's POV? His daughter is whining about cleaning up after everybody and making everybody's bed. He plainly said that all she has to do is make her own. Most of us probably had to make our own beds growing up, and long before we were 15.

Spoiled brats who complain about having to do 15 or 20 minutes worth of chores per day don't usually make anything of themselves. That attitude doesn't work in the real world.




Not to mention, no one knows what's actually going on in that home. I'm sure I said some mean things about my parents without ever coming out with the worst of what was actually going on. I would have been better off being raised by wolves, but I vented without letting the real nasty stuff out.

Or maybe the girl is mentally ill or mentally handicapped. What if she kills herself now? Or someone else? Going to praise the jerk then? For all we know, he's molesting the kid and she's crying for help. Seriously, we don't know what's going on here and it's VERY creepy. :(

Teen age suicide does seem to be an epidemic these days. When it happens because of bullying at school that parents and teachers refuse to deal with, it's truly a tragedy.

If she kills herself, that doesn't change the fact that the father had every right to do what he did in that video. And taking away a spoiled brat's cell phone and/or laptop is a perfectly reasonable punishment when a kid posts the things that little snot posted.

If she kills someone else, well, you as a gun owner should know better than most that guns don't kill people, people kill people. Guns have no mind of their own (although I know it does seem like they do sometimes). :)

As far as accusing the guy of molesting her, that might be going a little far. The daughter could, of course, kill herself and leave behind some kind of a message that she was being molested, as her ultimate way of getting back at him. But if that happened, I'm not sure that too many people would believe that that was actually going on.

That was funny. All in all, I agree with the guy. He was a little over the top, but I think that was kind of the point. The way that child disrespected her parents was shocking. It amazes me too that Facebook would allow an underage child to use that kind of language. They can't watch a rated R movie, yet they are allowed to be totally uncensored on Facebook, be it there inappropriate dress, vile language, and total disrespect for authority. This guy works his ass off for her, gives her shelter, a cell phone, and spends hours working on her little computer, and how does she thank him? Girl got what she deserved in my opinion. Sometimes it takes extreme measures to get a point across, hopefully this will teach her a little respect. He tried going easy on her to no avail, that didn't work, so obviously more extreme measures were required. I applaud this guy!

I saw a brief blurb about this story on Fox & Friends this morning (Tues)... apparently, the father is not going to try to cash in on this, the media is all over the place trying to interview him, he says he will not do any interviews. But they did say that the local police did pay the father a visit...and they (the police) thanked him for posting the video.

I think it depends on the State, and what kind of property you are on etc. I know gun laws are typically much less stringent in the South, which is clearly where that man was from. It looked like he was on a farm or something, and so I'm guessing it was legal. Seemed like a reasonably intelligent guy. I doubt he'd do something illegal and then put it up on Facebook after lecturing his daughter about stupid behavior, but you never know these days anymore.

Yeah, I'm quite sure that wherever this guy is from, it's legal to fire a gun, especially on your own property. Here in Florida, a lot of folks own guns and like to go shooting. People who own lots of acreage will sometimes invite a bunch of friends over, tell everyone to BYOG (bring your own gun) and they'll either set up targets to shoot at or they'll do some skeet shooting. In fact, I was at an event like that not too long ago... some guy owns like 50 something acres and had a bunch of guys over for a BBQ and anyone who wanted to could bring a gun (or guns) along and do some shooting. Happens a lot in Florida.

Re: the police going out there in the first place... I don't think that the police could have gone out there in response to the gun shots, because if that happened, there'd be no way that they could have thanked him for posting the video on youtube, since the video was just being made at the time the shots were fired.

So it sounds like the police stopped by to pay him a visit and to thank him for posting the video. But again, the father is not really doing interviews, so the circumstances under which the cops showed up is anyone's guess.

They could have shown up in response to someone else calling and asking them to investigate the gunshots. But it looks like the father owns a few acres, so guns going off is probably not unheard of in that neighborhood. I guess if they hear screaming, THEN they'll know something's wrong!

Yeah, it is a lesson for the child but I think it's just more of damaging a laptop that you might have to buy a new one of.

In Texas,a man shot,not a person,but his daughter's laptop,because she posted on You Tube some explitive-ridden gripes(oh,you know,things teenagers gripe about-doing chores,that kind of stuff)it went viral,and everyone knew about it.Anyway,the father and daughter have made up,and he saved the other stuff she had saved on the laptop.End of story.But one thing:If no one was hurt or abused except for the laptop(which is a machine,not a person),DSS(Department of Social Services)called in?Anyway, what would YOU do?
