...goes even farther back than that!

It was originated on radio by emcee Major Edward Bowes in the early '30s, and was #1 in its Sunday night time period in the 1935-'36 season {"Around and around she goes, and where she stops, nobody knows..."/When someone stayed on mike too long after the Major gonged the talent, he gently said, "All right, all right..."}. He died in 1945- and Ted Mack, who was one of his "assistants", took over and revived the show in 1946, eventually bringing it to TV in 1948.

Ted Mack's Original Amateur Hour was one of the few shows to run on all four networks, including the late Dumont network. It ended on CBS in 1970.
