Carrie Starring Kate Mara

After this photo was taken, Mara gamely insisted on being doused in fake blood.

“She’s kind of fearless, Kate,” says Murphy, who created for her the role of "American Horror’s" spurned mistress (modeled on Fatal Attraction’s Alex Forrest) turned malevolent ghost.

Like Carrie, says Murphy, “Even if you love to hate her, she does have reason to be pissed.”

When a Stranger Calls Starring Taissa Farmiga

When Stranger Calls was released in 1979, the call-coming-from-inside-the-house trope “was so unexpectedly daring and brazen,” says Murphy, “you almost felt betrayed by the phone company.”

Of 17-year-old newcomer Farmiga (sister of Vera), who plays "American Horror’s" rebellious daughter, “She’s authentic…incapable of being false.”

The Omen Starring Connie Britton

“I love Lee Remick in 'The Omen' because she was very American—strong-boned and refined,” Murphy says. “That’s how I think of Connie.”

How did "Friday Night Lights’" dream wife feel about playing "American Horror’s" harrowed heroine, who’s “maybe the mother of the Antichrist”? Says Murphy, “She got a kick out of that.”

Whatever Happened to Baby Jane? Starring Sarah Paulson

Baby Jane is “really about the betrayal of family, and lies, and cover-ups within a familial setting. That’s what 'American Horror' is,” says Murphy, who had fun conspiring with Paulson (an opportunistic medium on the show) over what “haggy Bette and ladylike Joan would wear.”
