Mr. Stefani 01-20-2002, 05:39 PM BEVERLY ANN - She sucked. I dotn get why they wrote her in as a gardian when they were all old. and she wasnt even funny and didnt seem to fit in the show well mY send choice is Pipa- there is no point in explaining, it was just plain dumb to add her to the show Bev Ann :stupid: Pipa JDS84 01-20-2002, 08:30 PM Pippa. OH WELL:wave: ks iluvjoandnancy4eva 01-22-2002, 09:42 PM Pippa... she gets on my nerves for some reason. I cant figure out why tho. I liked everybody else! Escpecially George cutie pie!!!!! ABlairican Pie 01-24-2002, 10:12 PM Worst addition to FOL? 1) The producers, etc. who gave them their walking papers in '88. 2) The program director at Nick-at-Nite who dropped them from their weeknight roster. Kay Scarpetta 01-24-2002, 10:24 PM Originally posted by Tad Warner Worst addition to FOL? 1) The producers, etc. who gave them their walking papers in '88. Yes. :crying: FolFanatic151 01-25-2002, 04:31 PM Kelly. She's the only one where I can't see a reason for her presence on the show. Pippa came because the girls were getting older, and they thought they needed the young girl thing again...kind of like Cousin Oliver on the Brady Bunch. Andy and George, I think, were put there for the male influence which was never very constant on FOL. Beverly Ann was probably added to keep the same basic formula the show started out with: the girls and the older mother figure. Anyways, so that's my conclusion. Kelly had no purpose. Bad addition. ABlairican Pie 01-25-2002, 09:24 PM Remember the Simpsons episode where Homer got to play the voice of "Poochie" on the "Itchy and Scratchy Show"? The whole point of the character was merely to look cool without any real bearing on the cartoon premise. It's kind of what I call "The Fonzie Syndrome": On Happy Days, Fonzie was in the beginning a sort of bit character dressed in mechanic's overalls with a very understated, laid back kind of cool (they were afraid to make him look like a hoodlum in his leather jacket just yet). When he became more of a central figure on the show, his coolness dominated, until, by the end of the series, he WAS the main character while Ritchie was nowhere to be seen. I think this was the start of a trend in the late 70's/early 80's where you had to have a non-essential "cool comic effect" type character, whose only purpose was to add sophistication to the show. (One can see that in the "Poochie" episode where a mysterious cool dude named Roy springs up out of nowhere and lays all this hip lingo on Marge and Homer.) Afraid of the girls as being seen as too nerdy and naive, they introduced "streetwise" Kelly for a while, and then Kevin (to increase the sexual tension with the girls--i.e., kissing Jo), goofy but handsome George, and of course, Dennis-the-Menace-like Andy with his snappy humor, and finally Pippa, who was the epitome of "the Fonzie Syndrome"--riding on a wave of popularity of Australian-related themes (the whole Crocodile Dundee/Yahoo Serious bit), the FOL producers felt they needed to boost its sagging ratings by being "culturally relevant"--let's introduce a chick from the outback who speaks in an incomprehensible Aussie lingo for no other purpose than for laughs--though she has no real bearing on the storyline. (I want to make clear that Fonzie was NOT a useless character on HD, but that too many shows felt a need to have a pointless hipster character for cheap laughs-- a Fonzie-type with exaggerated cool.) Unfortunately, it didn't work. I wonder if FOL stayed on for another year or so, they could have witnessed the end of the Cold War and brought on a chick from Lithuania... I was basically trying to say that the producers on the show tried to add some "cool" characters who really weren't necessary to the show. They were just there for the laughs and tried to show how "hip" they were. Case in point: Pippa. It was all because in the late '80's everyone wass into the "Australia" thing, so they "had to" have an Australian character to prove how cool they were, with all those goofy Aussie catch-phrases and all. It was a clear sign that FOL was in deep trouble in the ratings when they had to resort to this. I personally thought the episode where they introduced Pippa was incredibly lame. She was friggin awful!!!!And to think I was going to say "Andy"!!!!!Dont even remember Kelly???Were Kelly and Pippa the same person???????Yes Beverly Ann was dreadful. The girls shoulda just taken over at this point:Blair had the dough to fund any venture they woulda wanted to get into:A motorcyle shop for Jo/A roller rink or actors studio for Tootie....actually that gets my vote cuz Nat wrote and Tootie acted!!!!A playhouse that Blair funded and Jo ran!!!!Or was a bouncer for!!!!! ABlairican Pie 02-01-2002, 06:46 PM You know, I think for a while that the girls did take over, when Mrs. Garrett was out with George's dad. That was a cool time. Boy, that would have been a good idea, using Blair's money for something really cool. Now it's not that I thought Pippa, Andy, or Beverly Ann were awful, but in a lot of ways they just didn't really serve any purpose other than comic relief. Which is one reason why I think the show started to go downhill at that point. I'm glad to have seen it taped when I did. Kristina 02-10-2002, 04:21 PM Pippa, she was gross. In fact, she had a whole episode to herself: 'Working it out' (as a matter of fact it's a BLAIR and MRS G episode). I know we might not agree on that one AGAIN, but especially on that episode you can see the great CHEMISTRY/DYNAMIC between MRS G and BLAIR: there is a [I]mother/daughter chemistry between those two when they argue, and so much fire!!!! And i really don't think that BLAIR meant to call her that infamous line LANDLADY: i am convinced, that when she told to MRS G that she wasn't her mother, guardian and conscience it's because on the contrary, BLAIR felt that MRS G was those exactly3 things to her (a mother, guardian and DEFINITELY her conscience) but was too angry at the time. A angry person say lots of things they regret later on.:cheers::cheers: Lorimar Television 05-12-2020, 06:25 PM Blair's hair and the start of Jo's oversized man suits in the season premiere signaled the death knell.  valentina warner 05-12-2020, 07:25 PM I just voted for Beverly Ann. It is really too bad Edna's Edibles was replaced after just two seasons with Over Our Heads though, Edna's Edibles was a much more appealing location. Kelly was a horrible character, but thankfully she didn't last long. Of course not...because she wasn't a POD yet. Still a good episode where Blair brings her baby sister into the world, and doesn't go into Bootsie POD mode about how messy it all will be. I'm glad they didn't go down that road with it and kept her normal. RetroGuy2000 05-12-2020, 10:52 PM I voted for Beverly Ann. Cloris Leachman is a good actress on other shows, but her character was not needed here. Well said, Catsrule. It's not that Cloris wasn't a good actress; she certainly was. But her character was unnecessary. At more than one point, she even realizes it herself. Which... speaks volumes. It is too bad Charlotte Rae didn't want to stay for the whole run, but Mrs. Garrett should not have had a replacement at this point. The four main girls could take care of Over Our Heads on their own now, Blair and Jo were long grown and Natalie might have been too. Yep. All four of them were fully grown. Natalie graduated in episode 6-25, in May 1985, and Tootie graduated the following year, in 7-25, May 1986. Then there were two more seasons of the show. It is really too bad Edna's Edibles was replaced after just two seasons with Over Our Heads though, Edna's Edibles was a much more appealing location.
