This is from May of 1973, the story of the woman who owned that famous house where Mary Richards supposedly lived, and why she put an end to the MTM folks using it on The MTM Show:

I can't imagine in this day and age anyone would legally be able to film the exterior of a private person's home without that person knowing exactly the purpose for which that film would be used. The woman, according to her statements, had no idea in 1970 what that purpose was. A documentary???

It has been said this was the reason why they had Mary move to a highrise, but the chronology for that cause/effect is way off. They found another house to use for exterior shots which was actually a better match to the alleged layout of the building than the first house. I'm sure A/B pictures comparing the two were posted on a previous thread here.

Indeed there was. It was in this thread:

Yeah, I'm not sure the highrise had anything to do with it, but changing the exterior shots to that second house did. That article was from May 1973, after the third season was completed. According to the thread above, the second house wasn't used until the 4th season, which started in the fall of 1973. So that part seems to make sense. Unless the second homeowner wanted to get rid of them, too, it seems there must have been another reason for the move to the highrise.

The only other reasoning (I Think) was to show Mary as "moving up" in the corporate ladder as an Associate Producer.

Then, too, with both Rhoda and Phyllis spun off to different cities, what would the point of still having Mary be in that old apartment have been- especially since Phyllis had been left broke by the unseen and late Lars [and presumably had had to sell all assets including said building to fend off creditors]?
