I want to recommend a movie I saw about 15 years ago. It stars Robert Deniro, Ed Harris, and Kathy Baker. It's a movie that deals with two former Vietnam vet friends who meet up many years later. Ed Harris plays a character who has become an alcoholic, and casual drug user who lives with his sister. Deniro's character comes to take a reluctant Harris fishing on opening day like they had agreed to do back in Vietnam. Harris' character is reluctant, but finally agrees to go after the relentless urging of his sister and Jacknife. This is not a war movie. There are a few flashback scenes where they are fighting in Vietnam, but the movie deals with a barely recognized theme in movies, the psychological after affects that war has on many people. One of the final scenes is heartbreaking, when Harris' character sobs to Jacknife in front of his sister, and explains why the fishing trip was so hard for him to make. Deniro holds him, and suddenly his sister understands his pain. It was originally a 4 star HBO movie from 1989 that I rented by mistake, but has become one of my all time favorite films. Check it out if you get the chance. Deniro and Harris at their best!!
