View Full Version : What is it With The LOVE AFFAIR For 'Modern Family?!?'
Brian Damage 01-29-2012, 11:29 PM Don't get me wrong the show is funny, it does great in the ratings and Sofia Vergara is really pleasing to the eyes. However, does it really need to win every single comedy award out there every single awards show???

Monika, it just shows me the lack of imagination from Hollywood. The show is funny, but so are so many other shows on tv.
Mr. Television 01-30-2012, 01:07 AM I like the show but I like TBBT and The Middle better. The Middle never gets nominated for any awards.

Sonny, Hollywood is like a clique, they pick and choose who is cool and hip and don't let anybody else in. lol

That's why I haven't watched the Emmy Awards in 20 years. lol

I love all three shows, but Modern Family is the best show on TV. I can't wait to watch it every week. Never miss repeats even. It deserves all of the awards because it deals with real life topics for every family. It's The Cosby Show of this generation. It's done what no single-camera sitcom has done--mass appeal. And actors themselves picked the show to win tonight, so it was their peers.

That just a matter of opinion of course.

LOL
So true
It's like they don't think outside the box.

So aren't people who vote for awards making an opinion too? They think it's the best comedy. And I agree. Plus it didn't win any for best actor and best actress tonight (Baldwin and Betty White won).

Of course it is an opinion, but it is same old opinion year after year, award show after award show.
Pavan 01-30-2012, 01:21 AM The show has been only on three seasons. It didn't win the SAG its first season. And its Golden Globe win a few weeks ago was its first Globe.

Don't get me wrong...I do like Modern Family and am glad it's doing well. I prefer it to the low rated NBC single-cam shows that I've never found that funny. I watch the show every week as well. I just like TBBT and The Middle better. I do wish these award shows would give all good shows a chance to win. There are more great comedies besides Modern Family.

I know it didn't Pav, it was some other show that was considered hip and cool Glee which already has run its course.

Besides Jim Parsons, I don't think Big Bang is a type of show for awards. Then again Two and a Half Men kept getting nominated, and Big Bang is way better than that show. I do wish The Middle gets nominated for Patricia Heaton at least. I just don't think they are best comedy material.

That's exactly my point! Thank you Sonny!
EmoJoe 01-30-2012, 01:36 AM Modern Family is a rare bird of recent sitcoms in that it is considered to be both "well-written/smart" and it is also a mass appeal hit. Therefore, the critics and award shows eat it up because they get to please everyone.
Although I'd argue the show has gone downhill quality-wise quite a bit this season but...clearly the award shows disagree.
factsoflife 01-30-2012, 02:31 AM I think there are a lot of reasons why people (or in this case, award show voters) find Modern Family appealing.
First off, it's at it's core a show about family. Something that has been missing from TV for awhile. Secondly, it's a look at how raising a family has changed since the last wave of family sitcoms in the 80's and 90's. Thirdly, It's dang funny. The characters are funny, flawed and human. You can relate to them. Next up, a lot of people appreciate the diversity represented on the series (a gay couple, an older guy married to a younger, sexy divorcee, a white guy married to a Colombian woman, mixed familiars). It also has a feeling of "I've been there' to it, in that a lot of the situations, though heightened for comedic effect, feel like you may have gone through something similar.
It's not by any means a show for everybody, there's obviously people that don't like it, but it's a very funny, clever show and I think that people that voter for it reward it for a lot of reasons, one of them being it's one of the first hit comedies to come along in a long time. Aside from the CBS Monday shows; and to a much lesser extend (just look at the ratings) the NBC Thursday shows; MF is the first comedy in awhile to hit with the mainstream in a big way.
It also doesn't hurt that the people producing it (Steven Levitan and Christopher Lloyd) ad TV veterans with years of work behind them. They are obviously well liked so that doesn't hurt.

To be fair though, name one show where that isn't the case? you could really say that about any show.
