Joe Paterno, Division I's all-time winningest coach who was fired by Penn State in November, has experienced further complications from treatment from lung cancer and is in "serious" condition, a family spokesman said in a statement Saturday.

"Over the last few days Joe Paterno has experienced further health complications," a Paterno family spokesman said Saturday. "His doctors have now characterized his status as serious. His family will have no comment on the situation and asks that their privacy be respected during this difficult time."

The 85-year old Paterno has been battling lung cancer.

A source told The Citizens' Voice on Saturday that the Paterno family has asked close friends and former staff members to come to the Mount Nittany Medical Center in State College where Paterno has been undergoing treatment.

Paterno won two national championships and a Division I record 409 games over 46 seasons at Penn State and the Paterno family has donated millions of dollars to the school.

But Paterno's legacy was clouded in the wake of a sexual abuse scandal that has resulted in 52 counts of child molestation against former defensive coordinator Jerry Sandusky. Paterno had announced his retirement early on Nov. 9, but the Penn State board of trustees fired him and school president Graham Spanier about 12 hours later.

Paterno's cancer diagnosis was revealed Nov. 18, just nine days after he was fired. He recently re-entered the hospital after complications arose from his cancer treatments.

I was never a Joe Paterno fan and I didn't like how he handled the Sandusky situation. Saying that though it's sad that it's all ending this way. May God be with him :(

You are right Sonny, regardless of the Sandusky scandal that marred his once great legacy, it is sad to see him leave this world with this black cloud still looming over his head.

Sadly, I predicted to most people I know that this was going to happen shortly after the controversy went down a few months back. I was hoping I'd be wrong though. You're in my prayers Mr. Paterno! May God comfort and bless you and your family at this difficult time!!! :(

That's in a court of law. By his own comments, I think he's guilty. Regardless though, Paterno should have done more when he found out about it. I don't want to turn the thread into a Sandusky thread though. I do feel bad for Paterno. He was one of the greatest coaches of all time. I think he coached far too long though. I think he was afraid to leave the game.

You are right on all points Sonny. I think once he lost his coaching job, his health took a turn for the worse. Coincidence? Maybe or maybe not...

Such a tragic end to one of the best coaches in any league. I just hope hes not in a lot of pain. God bless him and his family. You will be missed JoPa.

Sorry for my role in spreading misinformation, but I should be given at least some credit for correcting my post as soon as I'd heard that the reports of his death were false (instead of a condescending "Uh... No, he's not.")

I've been a member here for a very long time, and I've been known for a lot of things. Bearing false witness isn't one of them.

CBS Sports reported Saturday that Paterno had died, but that claim has been refuted by the family. Jay Paterno tweeted that his father “continues to fight.”
See? If you'd done a simple Google search, and checked more than just two sources, you'd see I wasn't falsely reporting a man's death for no reason.

Many see him as a guy who went down in shame...he was old when he heard about the scandal! And PSU Wanted New Blood...this Jerry Sandusky Scandal was the best damn scapegoat for him!

May the Staff of PSU forgive his ass while it's 6 feet under, even the people of PSU wanted to appeal JoePa's firing and make it a layoff!

I even made a song for JoePa and how the staff and associate ****ed-up his career...I hope they pay on Judgement Day!...
