Can't believe it's been 30 years since this show debuted on TV! I was in 3rd grade when this came on the air. Just watched the pilot on itunes and have to say this show really holds up 30 years later. I was laughing at the jokes. A lot of the old sitcoms don't hold up well in 2012. I think today's kids would love this show.
Here's some things I like about this episode:
1) Ricky Schroder and Jason Bateman as kids!- Funny seeing these 2 before they hit puberty. Ricky really was a great child actor. He had the facial expressions and line delivery was excellent. He def had that Blond haired and Blue eyed California kid look and I kept thinking "There is no way this kid would survive in Military School." Isn't he suppose to be 12? Both he and Jason looks between 8-11 in this episode. And I didn't even realize that was Jason Bateman at first..he looks so little. LOL What a little brat Derek is. He says some mean stuff that really hurts. Derek is a kid who really needs a spanking LOL
2) The adults- I don't think the dad is the worst sitcom dad as the man-boy Edward Stratton III but the character is kind of funny as the idiot bumbling dad that a lot of these sitcoms have. Erin Gray was good too but she really needed much better clothes. The supporting adults were just ok. The outfit the Business Manger is wearing during the computer scene was pretty funny.
3) On-line Banking?- I swear one of the script writers had a friend or family member in the computer world and knew what the internet and computer technology was going to be in 10-15 years from 1982..Loved the on-line banking angle and someone being able to steal your money using a computer.
4)And , of course, that house ruled..With the Train and video games and foosball , what kid wouldn't want to live there..
I judge a tv series by the debut episode and really think this one was a 5/5 or A+
