What was the first 'great' episode? I think that TC needed a few episodes to get into the things it did. But I think that the episodes "And Mother Makes Four" and "No Children, No Pets" were as good as any of the later season episodes.

So, which was the first 'great' episode in your opinion?

I think five of the first six episodes are great. The only one I haven't seen too often is Roper's Niece.
