View Full Version : Why Not Have Gloria Bunker Marry Lionel Jefferson on 'All in The Family?'
Brian Damage 01-08-2012, 10:07 PM Does anybody think if Norman Lear and CBS really wanted to be visionaries, they should have paired up Gloria with Lionel instead of Mike Stivic. Don't get me wrong, I love AITF, but, what a statement that would have been in the early 70's?! Do you think it would have lasted with Lionel as a star?
USATVFAN 01-08-2012, 11:14 PM But then there would have been No Jefferosns.

Sure there could have been. You could still spin-off the parents and Mother Jefferson.
dakert 01-08-2012, 11:51 PM What about Gloria as a lesbian? I think Gloria was fine with Mike
catlover79 01-09-2012, 04:24 AM Interesting idea - I never thought of that.
old grouch 01-09-2012, 10:47 AM This reminds me of the movie 'Guess Who's Coming to Dinner'.
Wouldn't it have been too controversial back then to have Gloria & Lionel as a couple? I'm guessing most sponsors would have stayed away from it and the Bible-Belt probably would have boycotted it. Some things/attitudes in the late 60's & early 70's were slow to change, especially in the south.

Perhaps, but just a few years later "The Jeffersons" premiered featuring Helen and Tom Willis, an interracial couple.
catlover79 01-10-2012, 03:37 AM For whatever it's worth, if I was Gloria, I totally would've chosen Lionel over Mike. Lionel was fun, funny, warm, smart and CUTE.

If George had a problem with Lionel marrying Jenny (the product of an interracial marriage), there's no way he'd let a white girl live under his roof! He and George would definitely have been united in their protest.

I was just joking I didnt expect George would allow it either.

It was one thing for Louise to accept Jenny, but do you think she would've approved of Lionel dating a white girl if it had ever come to that?

Louise was very open-minded. I don't think she would have had a problem with it at all.
Cloud9 Lorraine 01-10-2012, 10:04 PM I think had Gloria married Lionel, all of Archie's insults would have been focused on racial black vs. white prejudices. With Mike, he could insult the Polish, the hippies, the liberals, the unemployed and every one else!
MikeLutton 01-10-2012, 10:21 PM worse then that the Bunkers and the Jeffersons be releated lol

Yes, that's my feeling, too. Of course, Edith adored both Lionel and Louise, so for them to be family would've just thrilled her to pieces.

Yea but by then, television was changing...thanks to Norman Lear.

Yup kind of like how George treated Jenny on the Jeffersons

This is THE BEST ANSWER. Take it and RUN with it.
TV_on_the_Porch 01-11-2012, 11:02 PM Gee, I sure hope Kevin Keller's dad isn't that narrow minded:
