Bewitched (CBS)

What: Another 1960s revival. Beleaguered executive has hot suburban witch wife and awful mother-in-law

Status: In development, with Marc Lawrence (Miss Congeniality).

Pros: Imagine if Hermione moved to the States and married a muggle named Darrin. It’s Harry Potter meets Desperate Housewives!

Cons: Can a magical nose-wiggle charm CBS’ Two and a Half Men fans and … Actually, you want non pithy and sincere answer? There’s two other sitcom reboots on this list (The Munsters and The Muppets) that face the same challenge as Bewitched. Once upon a time, hit broadcast comedies had wacky fantasy elements, from the The Addams Family to Gilligan’s Island to Alf. That’s because kids and adults all watched the same three channels (the Golden Age of TV, some say; like being stuck on a Disney cruise every night for decades, I say). Now kids have their own cable channels with fantasy comedies like The Wizards of Waverly Place starring young actors rather than watching a bumbling 30-year-old Gilligan. Adults decide what’s popular on broadcast, tuning in for comedies grounded in the real world, with grown-up characters who go to work, fight with their lovers and have sex (then complain about their jobs, lovers and sex lives). So child and adult TV viewing is far more segregated now, which is good for viewers because it provides a vast range of engaging choices, but bad for efforts to recapture the magic of all-ages classics like Bewitched on a network like CBS (Hawaii Five-0 worked because it was a grown-up show in the 1970s and still is now). All that said: Bewitched would get buzz.

No pros and all cons.

Any kind of Bewitched remake would suck balls.

It's all in the casting if the cast doesn't gel then it will flop. It would be cool if Erin Murphy were to play Samantha.

Seriously, are there ANY tv sitcom remakes that were worth the effort? Sure, a handful limped along for a few seasons, but even those were quite subpar and got by mostly by the name recognition only; the vast majority bombed worse than the 1975 Chicago Cubs.

So here we go AGAIN with some ill conceived nonsense that will contain NONE of the charm and playfulness of the original, and LOTS of typical 21st century cynicism (constant sex jokes, the "husband is an idiot" syndrome, kids that are like little W.C. Fields, begging to be slapped, etc...).

I just give up on the sitcom ever coming back in any kind of appealing form. I've enjoyed whimsical (Gilligan's Island, Brady Bunch) and the more realistic (Taxi, Barney Miller) but nobody can come up with anything A) original and B) with characters I really care about.

You're half right. Con: Everything.

Really, what's the point of remaking Bewitched (again)? And as if the movie wasn't horrible enough!

That's all I had to read to know that this author is full of it. He has no idea what classic tv is.

I agree. Why mess with something great? They got it right the first time.

Some things are best left in the past. No one will be able to top what the cast and crew of Bewitched did all those years ago. Elizabeth Montgomery knew that - which is why she never wanted to do a reunion movie!!!

Also, a Bewitched remake doesn't even deserve to air on CBS network. Why CBS? The original aired on ABC. I'm opposed to this. Please do not order this remake to series.
