I just loved how Mary could get flustered and characters like Lou and Rhoda would help her out.

Think single people male and female, can also relate to is my perfect partner out there?

As said before, people wanted to be like Mary Richards, she had the looks, great job, dated easily but most people were like Rhoda,an uphill struggle to make it,having disasterous dates but having a good sense of humour.

Phyllis of course, was the person you certainly didn't wanna be like, lol!

I can't really explain what makes Mary Richards so likeable.Perhaps it's because Mary Tyler Moore herself always has had so much personality and natural charisma.Very down to earth and girl next door type if you ask me.Not to mention she was easy on the eyes. There's just something about her that I've always liked since I was about 12 years old.

OH Nuts!

well for starters, she's refined, considerate, tasteful, conscientious, loyal, upright, has TONS of integrity, a great housekeeper and friend, courteous to all, always the first to help others, charming..... & I can keep going!

In resp. to what makes Mary likeable both on & off screen: her many talents, her magnificent work for Diabetes, her engagement with life in general. What I especially like about her is what a wonderful role model she is for living with Type 1 Diabetes, which believe me, is a handful. I see what Type 1's have to contend with and its no picnic.

I liked the fact that, as beautiful as Mary Richards was, she was still friendly and courteous to all.
There's something very attractive about a woman who knows she has a lot going for her but doesn't always call attention to it.

And yes, I think I could identify with her hoping to find somebody nice.

^^ Agreed. Everyone usually knows one or two people that have everything going for them and have the perfect life. I know a couple of those people and one of them is a real snob and jerk. In a way, she's right, she doesn't owe any of us the time of day, she has her full ride to the college of her choice and she has her boyfriend and she likes to remind everyone of how much better she is than us. I don't believe she's that much better, but she does, and it gets her through the day.

The other one would be one of my best friends. She has everything going for her, but she never brings it up, unless she's super excited about something, and she never shoves it in anyone's face.

Your second friend has the same thing that Mary Richards did; grace. Your first friend makes the mistake of assuming that circumstances in her life will NEVER change, and she's alienating everyone that she might need as a friend some day, based on the foolish assumption that she'll never need anyone.

Mary and friend number two "get it" that looks are transitory, as are things like money and position. There's a great saying I like to quote from time to time, that I think applies here. "Appreciate beauty, invest in character." Character is going to get Mary and those like her through lots of obstacles in her life, while beauty is a thing to be put on a shelf and admired for a moment, but not dwelt upon.
