It will be interesting to see what episodes appear in the new DVD release.

I guess this is Classic 39 and Lost Episodes combined.

Do you know if this was any episode to choose from or TV Shows on DVD pick's certain episodes to choose from ? The latter which would not be fan favorites.

CBS only distributes the Classic 39, so there will be no Lost Episodes here. MPI put out a Lost Episodes "Best of" disc earlier this year.

There was a poll held on the CBS Facebook page, so the fans did actually pick the episodes.

Pretty cool release that will probably get people buying the 39 classic set or the complete lost episodes collection. :)

At the time of the 50th anniversary in 2001/2002 Paul Brownstein had said that CBS had recently remastered the 39 episodes into HD. I had read somewhere that when the original DVD release happened that the HD masters were not used.

The CBS Syndication Bible website says that The Honeymooners have not been remastered into HD. I do not know what is true, unless he meant some video tweeking done to the videotape of the color shows.

I do not have any additional information or knowledge on this other than what was said in the special, shared in reviews, and found on the CBS information site. There were several issues with that DVD set, mostly within audio quality on some of the episodes so hopefully this will also be corrected within this release.

Any predictions on the 8 episodes that will be on the DVD ?

My guess: TV or not TV, Funny Money, The Golfer, The Sleepwalker, $99,000 Answer, Matter of Record, Young at Heart and The Safety Award.

Very hard to choose. Had 8 other episodes that I couldn't decide on.

If "TV Or Not TV" is included then hopefully a print with good audio will be used and make this purchase worth it for those of us who already have the Classic 39!

Not necessarily. Just because something has been remastered into HD and those masters used does not mean they have to be a Blu-ray release. Sony remastered all 190 Three Stooges shorts into HD and then used those new trasnfers for the DVD release. Sony also did the same thing when they released Buster Keaton's 10 short subjects he produced for Columbia. Back in 2004 at the Lucy fest in Jamestown, NY, Gregg Oppenheimer said that as the I Love Lucy seasons were being prepared for DVD release the shows were being mastered into HD and being stored on HD media.

If/When the time comes that a studio decides to release something onto Blu-ray then the remastering is complete and ready to go. And even though something may be released with only a "standard def" quality on DVD, using an HD master will still result in a some-what better picture than if not used. Again, Sony's work on the Stooges' Columbia shorts is a great example of this.

Also ... the new Laurel and Hardy set is another example. All films released on that box were remastered into HD, yet only released on DVD. The HD masters are waiting and ready for when the time comes to release on Blu-ray. As long as the upconversion of a DVD when played on a Blu-ray player increases the quality of the picture then a lot of these things already out of DVD probably will not make it to Blu-ray. If I had to make one prediction it would be that a Blu-ray release of I Love Lucy would be something that happens within the next 2 years only because of its status in TV history, the show is already in HD, and once CBS releases the final season of The Lucy Show there will not be anymore Lucille Ball to release so they have to make their money off the show somehow.

I have seen DVDs played on Blu-ray players at friends houses and they look great, while maybe not full HD you can tell a difference in picture quality. While I do not know what could be done for a release of the Lost Episodes in HD since they are kinescopes, a Blu-ray of "the Classic 39" would be great. Plus, with just 39 episodes I can't see the price being too expensive.

Speaking of HD and everything, the kinescope remastering process called "Live Feed" takes the kinescopes and gets rid of the flutter on the screen and makes the shows look live in nature, like on videotape or a live broadcast. Does anyone know what process UCLA used - if any really - to do the upgrade on the new set? And does one think that if using the proper way of remastering (and the original 16mm film elements) that HD transfers of kinescopes could happen?

I've heard of the "Live Feed" process before but I highly doubt that the Lost Episodes could be made to look better than they do now.

The sound in the Classic 39 needs to be fixed. Many episodes I have to adjust the volume high & low.

Picture quality is going to be hard to improve. It looks just about perfect.

As far as The Honeymooners being available in HD goes, I do remember watching David Letterman the other night and when he was talking about Charlie Sheen's drinking problem and with his show being wildly popular, he said that networks are looking for something similar. (This was before Charlie got fired from "Two & A Half Men.") So...they showed an "advertisement" for the Honeymooners on...TV Land (despite the fact that the network hasn't showed the Honeymooners since '03.) The clip was Ralph & Ed being "drunk" on grape juice. I was watching the HD feed of CBS when I was watching this, but the Honeymooners clip was not in HD (CBS HD showed it with the black picture frame.)

So either David Letterman's producer had the SD copy of the Honeymooners (and that was why the black frame was around the picture) or CBS hasn't put the show (or at least the CLassic 39) out in HD which I think would mean that other TV stations such as WPIX can't show it in HD.

I rewatched the 2002 Larry King show about the 50th anniversary of The Honeymooners, and Paul Brownstein said that the original 35mm masters were used to create brand new digital masters of the Classic 39, not HM masters. That was my error, it has been awhile since I had watched it and I was remembering wrong.

Regardless, I hope better prints of some of the episodes are used on this new "Best of" set instead of some used on the original release. I will probably still pick this up, if anything to have a few Honeymooners at our summer place for any last minute rainy day viewing.

Just an update for those interested: the audio issue with "TV or Not TV" was not corrected on this release. The final scene from "The Sleepwalker" is the same as well.
