Russell Brand Lands Late-Night Series on FX

FX has signed a deal with Russell Brand for six 30-minute episodes of an unscripted late-night series, the network announced Thursday.

The yet-to-be-titled show is set to debut next spring and will be shot in front of a live audience, who will interact with the host. The network describes the series as "Brand's unvarnished, unfiltered take on current events, politics and pop culture."

"We're very excited to add Russell Brand's bracingly funny, original, and honest voice to the FX comedy line-up," said Nick Grad, FX's executive vice president of original programming.

"We look forward to supporting Russell and his partner Troy Miller's ambition to strip down the hosted comedy format to its most fundamental elements and to create something daring and unfiltered for the FX audience."

Brand is best known for his roles in Forgetting Sarah Marshall and Get Him To The Greek.

He is married to music superstar Katy Perry.

It's official... FX is heading into the late night game with a pretty unexpected choice, Russell Brand. The cable network has order six half-hour episodes to air sometime this spring which will most likely be spread out over the course of six weeks. Whether FX or Brand see this as a potentially long term partnership is unknown, but as of right now, I think this has an extreme amount of potential, and I'll tell you why!

Brand is more than a scruffy face and tight pants. Anyone outside of the eighteen to forty-nine demographic might not know this, but Brand is actually an extremely intelligent individual who hosted his own radio and television shows back in the UK before becoming a big time movie star in America over these last three and a half years. He might not be everyone's cup of tea, but I think if given the chance by the American public, they will realize just how smart this man is when it comes to discussing current events and politics, and in the current land of late night hosts, he has the potential to branch out as the most unique and noteworthy. The untitled talk show project will be filmed in front of a live studio audience, and I'm assuming that like Jay, Dave, or Conan, Brand will be taping his shows just hours before they air. Brand might also fit in extremely well after shows like Wilfred, The League, Archer, and even Charlie Sheen's upcoming sitcom, Anger Management, which is set to premiere this June. Now whether Brand's show will still be airing into June is unknown, but I find it doubtful that FX would pass on the opportunity of premiering this show without the support of some of its biggest hits. Personally, if I was running FX, I would put the show on in a 10:30pm slot behind one of their prime time favorites rather than against Jon Stewart, Chelsea Handler, and Conan at 11, or against Colbert, Dave, and Jay at 11:30. Any further details though beyond the recently signed contracts are still unknown. I for one will be watching closely as this story continues to develop!
