The show was good, but did Valerie Bertinelli save this show from being a failure?

Thoughts???

Personally, I feel Valerie made the show watchable. Without her, many of the characters were really unlikeable. JMO

I think she was one of the big reasons it was a success. I don't even think the Producers knew what they had. when the show premiered she was more like a tomboy and then overnight it seems...:faint: I liked all the characters though but after Mackenzie Phillips left she was the main reason to keep watching.

That's right Sonny, I totally forgot that she liked to play basketball and wore overalls. lol This is just my opinion of course, but the Julie Cooper character was a brat and Ann Romano was angry too much. Barbara was always there with a smile to brighten the day. lol

In all honesty, I think Mack Phillips in retrospect would be the icon for this show. The show wasn't the same to me without her in the mix. I loved Valerie as well. I would have missed her too, though.

I hear what you are saying, Mackenzie Phillips was needed for balance. Just out of curiosity though, what was it that you liked about Julie Cooper?

She was firey, fiesty and as you said, added balance. She was such a prominent character. She was a counter for goody Barbara whom I loved also. The girls needed each other to balance one another.

Yea I agree. The show was not the same after Mac left. The girls played well off each other.

That's what I've been saying. The last season, Mac did three eps but then it had her missed presence (which was her own fault, though :( ).

The show was never the same after Mackenzie Phillips was let go the first time in her battle with drugs. The balance was gone and you can feel it in the first season she was gone. Valerie's character Barbara served as a calming force between Julie and Ann because they're both were high strung and quick tempered.

I did like how they made Barbara to be a virgin and wait until she gets married. It served as a role model for teens.

I agree. Her remaining a virgin was refreshing.

Once Mac left, Val was the only reason to keep watching, especially when they brought that annoying Alex kid on.
