It was said early in season 1 that James made too much money but just barely

How was it neglect? The kids weren't starving or wanting for anything.

They were not enjoying their meals LOL
isiahthomas 01-21-2012, 03:14 PM James and Florida didn't have 5 kids. They had 3 kids and they should've been getting welfare and food stamps. I know they got tired of eating oatmeal all the time for breakfast. They could've had sausage, bacon, eggs with the oatmeal. Only thing i remember them eating for dinner was chicken LOL.

They still ate, no one starved.

Exactly. We get too hung up on what is legit by law on some things. What Florida is neglecting according to some documented rule or judgment passed by Congree/Government. LOL. Too much political correction about some innocent things.
yayaya 04-23-2012, 09:19 PM WIC????? That's for women who have infants or children under the age of 5 years old. Michael was too damn old for Flo to qualify for WIC.
James was too proud to receive assistance of any other kind the family was entitled to.
Florida said in that early rent episode where the family was going to be evicted that Thelma ate pretty damn good after she pretended to faint so the family's possessions wouldn't be taken by those two guys.
TVFactFan 04-23-2012, 09:49 PM Good Times was unrealistic because a family that poor usually have ALL TYPES of programs they can qualify for to survive

The kids should have been recieving free school lunches at the school cafeteria.

And the family should have been on a rent subsidy program LOL

That's true too. The entire Evans family needed help. It's too bad that James was sometimes (actually most times) too stubborn. There is nothing wrong in asking for help especially when you have a wife and three kids to think about.

The Evans' qualified for many programs, but James was too damn stubborn to accept that help. I think when a family like the Evans have three three children to take care of, pride needs to take a backseat sometimes. It wasn't like the Evans were trying to milk the system - they were trying to make ends meet. James had a thing about taking money from the government. I bet he wouldn't tell Michael or Thelma to NOT take a grant or school loan.
As for rent subsidy, isn't that why they lived in the projects? I assumed the building they lived in was for people who had a low income such as section 8 housing. What I didn't get, why was Willona living there? She was not a single mother or anything of the sort. She had all those promotions as "head buyer" for the boutique.

A lot of people back then were to proud to accept any help from the government, unlike today. I know when my mom was a child, the younger kids ate first and then the oldest and then my grandma and grandpa ate what was left. You had to do what you had to do back then.
I think Wilona started out as a reg store clerk and then in season 4 or 5 she became the "head buyer."
yayaya 04-24-2012, 01:06 AM I am certain Willona was promoted three times to head buyer.

She might have, when they changed writers a lot of things became inconsistent.

It doesn't seem like it since they were struggling to pay a LOW rent LOL

I know, right?
If James had received food stamps, it would have been easier to pay that rent.

I know that's why the show was realistic because everyone who lives in the projects is on welfare and receives food stamps
Astaldo711 05-09-2012, 11:16 AM If you call DYFS or whatever the local agency is called, they don't just come and take the kids away. They would investigate. They would find that the kids aren't sickly, they have clothes that are clean and not full of holes, they aren't beaten or neglected, and they have an education.
